Bellatrix was in her element. The execution of a well-laid plan always gave her a sense of calm, and tonight was no exception. She had let it slip weeks ago that she had big plans for the holidays, and spent hours with Rodolphus and Ran, pouring over guest lists and blueprints, planning for every possibility. Rodolphus’ little demonstration a few years ago with the wizarding wireless had been brilliant, and it was about time that they kissed, made up, and started using their unique talents together, for the cause.
Tonight was a reminder for the order and for the wizarding world. It was a reminder that the cause wasn’t going anywhere and that it was more powerful then they thought. For Bellatrix, it was a reminder of what she could accomplish when she worked with her husband and her subordinates.
Bellatrix, Rodolphus, Ran, and seven other death eaters stood outside the doors to a large ballroom at 11:10pm on New Years Eve. Ran, with his tricky illusions, had made the group of death eaters dressed in long black robes and white, expressionless masks, appear to number in the thirties. They were now dressed in tasteful and high-end muggle clothes, with different faces. Bellatrix appeared as herself, dressed in a fine, high-necked robe that would pass as a dress.
As soon as the group was cloaked as revelers, Bellatrix glanced over to make sure that Ran had begun on the real illusion. He had. At his nod, she pushed open the doors, and amidst the commotion of welcoming the New Year, few of the muggles in the room noticed their arrival. Anyone paying particular attention to Bellatrix or the other death eaters would see them casually dancing, sipping from the flutes waiters were still passing out, or having quiet conversations next to the fashionable ice sculptures lining the ball room.
The real Bellatrix, Rodolphus, and Regulus appeared immediately at the muggle prime minister’s side. Bellatrix purred unnoticed at the prime minister, then turned to the muggle-born Auror who was acting as the minister’s secretary and bodyguard, in case of a situation similar to this. “Avada Kedavra” she whispered, and the man collapsed. The three of them merged into the crowd once more, waiting for the Order members to show up and join the party.

When Bellatrix had informed Ran of her plan several weeks ago, he had been eager to be such an integral part. Integral wasn't easy, though. It took him all of the available time to master the complicated illusions that the plot required. Unlike the parlor tricks he'd performed for Bellatrix since he first arrived at her side months ago, these illusions mimicked humans and some of them covered live, independently moving individuals. He had to provide distinct, realistic facial features for each person, disguise their voices, make it sound like they weren't talking through masks. For the dozen or so illusory Death Eaters, Ran had to give them the ability to make simple small talk. It had been a daunting challenge, but he was confident that he'd gotten it right.

As the Death Eaters prepared to enter the ballroom, Ran built each illusion quickly but one by one. He started with the real Death Eaters, applying their new appearance. Then he summoned a small army of unreal party goers, who he'd replace with unreal Death Eaters when the Order arrived. When he was finished he gave Bellatrix the signal and she led them into the ballroom.

While Bella, Rodolphus, and Regulus moved in near the Muggle Prime Minister, Ran set the illusory guest into motion. Maintaining the overall illusion required most of Ran's attention, but he was able to keep a close enough eye on Bella to cast the next illusion.

As she cast the killing curse on the Auror bodyguard, Ran cast an illusion over the dead man. The green flash of light and the dead body were unseen. Lookers on would still see the odd-looking body guard standing around, scoping the room.

The first phase was complete.

Kingsley, Tonks, Mad-Eye, and Ron apparated into a ballroom full of Muggles. In the din of the Muggle celebration, few if any noticed the unusually dressed figures popping into being. Kingsley was putt off-balance by the seeming normality around him. Were they at the right place?

Tonks' wand was clutched tight in her hand but not raised as her eyes darted around the room. This wasn't right. Ginny didn't get it wrong. Lestrange was here somewhere. Seriously, why couldn't Bella just be stupid about things so they could catch and kill her?

Thirty seconds after the Auror's apparated into the room, Bellatrix nodded to Ran, who on her order, altered the illusions. Bellatrix didn't pretend to know how he had done it, but now instead of the thirty darkly dressed revelers, there were thirty tall wizards in long black robes and white masks, and Bellatrix, milling about the party. The Prime Minister's "Secretary" laid slain at the Prime Minister's feet.

Bellatrix counter slowly in her head, four, three, two... and then out loud "One." Her whispered word was the only signal the real and fake robed figures in the room needed, and they all vanished in unison.

Tonks' wands raised, pointed at Bella, the words Petrificus Totalus formed in her throat (Kingsley had specifically told her that Avada was not to be used until Lestrange attacked), and then they were gone. "Merlin's shit-stained panties, that bloody--" Tonks screamed before seeing the secretary. "Colin!" she rushed over and knelt next to him. He was definitely gone.

She looked up at the Prime Minister. "Sorry for my language, Sir."

Moody, meanwhile, had magically sealed the room so that the Muggle witnesses were disinclined to go anywhere. "That should make your job easier, Weasley."

Other Aurors begin apparating into the ballroom. Kingsley turned to Tonks and said, "Tonks, you're on the Prime Minister until you hear from me otherwise. Mad-Eye, thank you, but you best be off. Weasley, you can get your people in here as soon as you like."

With that he turned to headed toward the squad of Aurors now assessing the scene. He quickly dispatched them, sending them on assignments to scout known Death Eater safe-houses in an attempt to catch the Dark Wizards en masse. After, he disapparated, clearly unhappy.

Ron nodded, and turning away from the carnage pulled a small circular mirror from his pocket, tapped the surface, and whispered "Point B, guys, lets move it."

A few seconds later there were a series of popping noises, and Ron's team from the obliviator's squad appeared around him. "Okay blokes, the idea is the same-" He looked at his watched. "I'd say lets take the last 2 hours to be safe, take all nessesary information, and provide alternative experiences. Don't get to creative boys, lets make it a clean night." He nodded, entirely more athoritative than he had ever been before. The four other wizards began working on the crowd, and Ron squinted about the room. There were plenty of people that needed wiping- but he was hesitant to sanction another team. He would handle it.

Tonks grabbed a small mirror identical to Ron's from her robes, tapped it as well, and said, "Mungo's, we'll need a healer to retrieve Colin Masterson. An AK from a DE."

Another tap and she said, "It's Tonks. I'm going to need your office to send someone round to Masterson's wife. He was just AK'ed by Lestrange. Keep it brief. We'll tell her more when we know. He'll be at Mungo's for her."

She put the mirror back in her pocket, sniffled once and looked at the Prime Minister. "I'll be taking you back home immediately, Sir. Just have to consult with that gentleman over there." She wlked quickly over to Ron and leaned close to not be overheard. "You need to wipe the Minister or am I taking him with memory intact?"

Two Mungo's employees popped in, grabbed Colin, and popped out.

"Of course Tonks, Lets see," He looked into the Minister's eyes, monitoring for a few moments the minister's outward, and subtly, his inward signs of distress. Ron decided on a course of downplaying the scene, but not removing it entirely. Ron modified the Minister's memory, leaving him with the sedate knowledge that he had attended a party, the party had been infiltrated, and his aid had died saving the minister's life. Ron carefully removed any stress associated with the aid's death. The culprit, the minister knew, was a wanted criminal, but the danger had passed. Ron stepped back, patted the minister on the shoulder and said "you'll be all right sir." and nodded to Tonks. "Thank's for bringing him over Tonks. I'll be sure to include his modification in my report. I will take care of the follow up with the appropriate departments in a few days."

Ron had learned very quickly after taking this job that his vocabulary needed a bit of sprucing up. He never bothered to learn a different way of speaking, but carried around a few words now to throw into conversation to convince people he could do this job. "Appropriate", "argumenative", and "Obtuse" were a few of these words.

He turned away from Tonks with a nod, and continued to modify memories.

"Thanks, Ron," Tonks said before looking back to the Prime Minister. "Sir, if you'd take my arm," she said and side-alonged him back to his office. Once there, she poured him a rather large drink, handed it to him, and took off her official over-robes, taking a seat in one of his chairs. "Now, Sir, the Ministry of Magic will have a new aur- guard sent to you as soon as a possible. Until such time as a suitable replacement is found, I'll be looking after you. My name is Tonks."

The Prime Minister drank what was offered to him. "Odd sorts of names you lot have."

"It's my surname.... Now, if you'd like to get some sleep or do some work, I'll stay out of your hair as much as possible."

"I'm not sure I could sleep now, Miss Tonks. Would you like to play cards?"

"Er, ok, and you needn't call me Miss anything." Maybe this wouldn't be so bad.
