First Contact
Tessa Reece had been watching one Mikhail Romanov all semester. It was her job and to be honest she didn't really mind watching him. He was cute...very cute and he seemed like a nice guy. It made her wonder why Nicholas had such a hatred for Mikhail going on. She did mind the algebra class. Boring and so useless.

She had made it a point to sit across from him in the next row and she gave him a small smile every time she caught his eye. Today she was going to make the initial contact. The semester was almost over and the chances to make contact were rapidly decreasing. Finals were next week and then the semester was over. It was now or never.

As soon as the clock signaled that the class had ended, she accidentally on purpose knocked her textbook off her desk and onto the floor.

Misha was just glad to be back in class and doing something normal. He'd had to stay out to keep the school from being disrupted when the Romanov news broke, and then again when Mom stepped down for Mikhail to take over. Every reporter wanted to know how he felt about it. There wasn't a lot to say. Crown prince or the second in line, it didn't matter when the government was ready to auction his ass off to the loftiest titled woman they could find.

He was packing up his book and notebook, ready to disappear to Big Nick's and eat his way through a triple decker Big Nick's special and a couple of beers while he studied for the test next week when the book landing on the floor made him freeze for a second. It was a hold over from the last kidnapping. Still as jumpy as hell, though he tried to hide it so his minders wouldn't report it.

He leaned over to pick it up and hand it back with a smile to the pretty redhead. The day was never a bad one when a pretty girl smiled back. "Here you go."

She put on a big smile. "Thank you. I'm such a klutz most of the time." She looked at the book in her hand. "I don't even get half this stuff most of the time."

"If I didn't have a great tutor, I wouldn't remember half of this from high school," Misha said. "I'm..." he took a second to consider, and then mentally shrugged. He'd enrolled as Mike Roman, but the press.... "Misha."

"What's their name and do you think they'll tutor another student?" she asked. Keep the conversation going. That was key. "Nice to meet you. I'm Tessa Reece."

"It's nice to meet you, too, Tessa." Misha held out his hand. "My sister is tutoring me and she'll be leaving for MIT any second. She's been checking over my homework and pointing out where I'm missing steps. Big help, too. I'm not wired for numbers." Unless they were phone numbers, but that was a whole different game.

She hesitated a moment, making sure he saw the hesitation, and took his hand to shake it. Her powers delved into his mind and she knew what he feared the most. He was scared of being tied down and cut open.

"You're lucky to have someone to help you with this," she said, shook his hand and then released it.

He saw the hesitation and almost shrugged off the handshake when she took his hand. "I consider it payment on account for all the bratty things she did to me when we were growing up."

They'd stood here so long the next class was beginning to file in and take their seats. He looked around, then back at Tessa. "Want to get some coffee?"

She smiled and nodded. "I'd like that. You can tell me how horrible your sister was to you when you were growing up."

A few minutes later they were sitting outside the student canteen with coffee, just two more students outside on a warm morning. His security was scattered about, so professional that Misha couldn't spot them with a casual glance. It made it easier to pretend he wasn't a Person of Interest.

"Anya and I have always gotten along well, but sometimes we clashed and Mom would take us into the gym and make us work it out." His smile said those were good times. "She's pulled some awful stuff on me and I've done the same to her."

"She rigged my car with a voice that argues with me. I put rubber spiders in her bed once. She reprogrammed my cell phone to play 'It's Raining Men' when I get a call. I put Koolaid in her shower head. All clean, harmless fun. No one maimed or killed." He said it lightly, but it was a rule. No maiming or killing.

"Every girl should have a brother like you," she said. She looked away for a second. "I'm an orphan. I grew up in the system. Sometimes I was in a foster home and had other kids around, but they weren't exactly brothers and sisters."

"Pizza and beer, then a walk through the park for dessert? The best ice cream on the Upper West Side is a little shop near the museum." Come to think, he hadn't been out on a real date since before Red Room. The play dates arranged by the embassy didn't count. He was about due for a relaxing evening with a pretty woman.

She paused in her writing and looked over at him. "Oh I don't know. You certainly look like you could be trusted, but you can't judge a book by its cover. Perhaps you could give me your sister's number? I'd probably hear things you wouldn't tell me."

"See you tomorrow." He watched her walk away with a slight frown on his face. Definitely not the usual type that tried to chat him up. And a redhead. Mental note - no pictures in the paper. Anya would not let him live that down.
