An Evening At the Guggenheim
Sylvia Sersi smiled as she made a circuit of the room. Tonight was her big chance. "Parties By Sersi" had landed the job of organizing a party for the unveiling of a new undiscovered Ansel Adams photo and if this went smoothly, she'd have jobs lined up for the rest of the year and into next. Big parties like this made party planners' careers.

Tonight had to go well. Nothing could ruin it.

Glass of champagne in hand she slowly walked around the room. The place was filled with the who's who of New York society. Sylvia would love to organize parties for these people and tonight was her ticket to doing just that. There was a warm smile for each person she met and business cards had been pressed into a lot of hands.

She sipped champagne and continued to slowly make her way around the room.

Tony can't believe that Pepper scheduled him to come to this party, but he finds it more than agreeable once he sees the women. He has a ginger ale or two as he mingles, and finds that, even here, people know Tony Stark.

It would be nice to find someone in this crowd that didn't.

Soon enough, however, he has to break away from a boring conversation to greet an old friend.

"Excuse me, miss. I couldn't help but notice you from across the room, and I just had to know your name." Tony says, using the first pick-up line he'd ever tried on his old friend, Sersi. They often played this game before they started in on catching up, and Tony figured this time would be no different.

"I'm Tony Stark. Can I get a name to go with the face that's going to haunt me all the way back to America?" he asks playfully.

Sylvia put on a smile. The Tony Stark. If she could charm him enough and get a job planning one of his parties she would be made. "A pleasure, Mr. Stark," she said and held out a hand to him. "Sylvia Sersi."

Oh, she's going the formal route. Okay, he'll bite.

He kisses the offered hand.

"Miss Sersi, I love what you've done with this place. Do you only do art affairs, or would you ever consider a corporate gathering or two?" Tony asks.

"I've been seeking someone with taste and I'm finding fewer and fewer planners who can meet my vision."

Inside she was cheering. Outside, she kept a calm expression. Though there's no look of recognition on her face or in her eyes. This was the first time meeting him. "Mr. Stark, I would be honored to plan a party for you. No matter the size or event. It's every party planner's dream to plan an event for someone such as yourself."

She opened her clutch and pulled out a business card. "My card."

Wow, she's playing this one to the hilt tonight. If he didn't know any better, he would swear this was the first time they'd ever seen each other.

He takes the card, looks at it, and smiles. "And is this your business or private number?" he asks. Any moment now, she'll crack a smile and hug him like usual.

She put her hand on his and turned the card over. "Both. I'm available at all times." A smile. He was more good looking in person than on television or in magazines.

"Are you enjoying the party?"

Tony raises an eyebrow and smiles. There's the Sersi he knows.

"Well, that's great. I'd like to talk about the...party, in greater detail with you. I can talk for hours about my vision, but I'd hate to keep you up if you've got work in the morning." Tony says.

"This party is wonderful. I'm definitely impressed with your work, Miss Sersi." he says. "I'll also recommend you to some of my friends."

"I don't sleep much, Mr. Stark, so keeping me up late isn't a big deal. I love to talk about what I do and parties. With the pace of the world these days and how hard people work, I firmly believe that people should enjoy themselves as much as possible. Even at stuffy formal affairs." Unlike the Sersi he knows, there's no hint of innuendo in her words. She's just being sincere.

"Thank you," she said proudly. "I would be forever grateful if you did, Mr. Stark. It's hard to get a business off the ground. Especially one like this. The competition is fierce and out for blood."

A very small warning bell goes off in Tony's head. He'd practically invited her back to his place for...talking, and she'd either missed the pass (Sersi never misses a pass; she practically wrote the book on writing the book on good sex) or she was enjoying this game a little much.

"Hey, there's need to thank me. Just remember to give me the special discount." he grins.

"Do you have a moment? I'd like to ask you something in private." Tony says.

"I won't forget to give you a very generous discount. The business I'd get alone from planning a Stark party will more than make up for it."

A brow rose. She was intrigued. She held out a hand to him. "Of course."

Tony takes her hand and leads her out onto the balcony, away from prying eyes.

"Wow. You told me the last time you were going to make me wonder, and you have. But we can stop now. How have you been? You look like you're doing well, but you could have just called if you wanted to plan Stark Inc, party. Pepper knows you're one of us." Tony smiles.

She blinked. What was he talking about? "Excuse me, Mr. Stark, I have no idea what you are talking about." It sounded like he knew her. Was this some sort of joke?

The smile falters a moment. "Sersi, really, it's just us. We don't have to pretend anymore." he says.

"And would you please just call me Tony? You know how I get about the whole 'Mr. Stark' thing. People used to do that with my father. I still look around for him when people call me that." Tony says.

"I'm really confused," she admitted. "I'm sorry, Mr. Stark, but I've never met you before today. I'm very glad to meet you and I'm thrilled at the idea of planning a party for you, but I swear this is the first time I've met you."

Tony's smile is gone.

"Sersi, what do you mean? We've been friends for years and then some. Your people, the Eternals, call the Avengers friends." he whispers, looking for even a hint of recognition.

"Sersi, are you certain you've never met me before now?" Tony says.

"The Etern-whats? The Avengers? I'm sorry. You must be thinking of someone else. Maybe someone I look like, but definitely not me." There's not one glimmer of recognition in her eyes or on her face. "I am sorry, Mr. Stark, but today is the first time I've met you."

This is Very Bad.

"Okay, Sersi. I know I sound like a crazy man, but...what if I can call some mutual friends of ours? People who can confirm what I'm telling you is the truth? Hank, Janet, Steve...oh, especially Steve. You're the only woman I know that can make Steve Rogers come close to bushing on a regular basis.

They'd all be happy to tell you that what I'm saying is true. Then we can help you find out why you don't remember us." Tony says gently. He's trying not to scare her off, but if that doesn't work...he'll have to try different measures.

Sersi listened and didn't recognize any of the names. There were no faces to associate with them.

She shook her head. "I don't recognize those names. The only one I know is Steve Rogers and that's only from what I've heard on the news.

I'm really sorry, Mr. Stark. I don't know you or these people you speak of. They are your friends so of course they will back what you are saying."

"But they're your friends, too, Sersi. Okay, what if I get one of the Eternals to come and talk to you? They don't have any reason to back me up, but they'll definitely tell you the truth." Tony days.

"I don't know them Mr. Stark. I don't know you. Most of the people I know come from my business."

She rubbed the bridge of her nose.

"I have a party to get back to. I won't get any business if I'm not out there mingling."

"Sersi, here's /my/ card. If you start remembering anything, or you need anything all, please call me." Tony implores.

"I know that what I'm saying sounds crazy, but we really do know each other really well. We're friends, and I just want to you to know that I'm still your friend." Tony says.

This is bad. Maybe he should call Dane Whitman and tell him about this. Perhaps he'll jog her memory.

In the meantime, he needs to tell the rest of the team what's going on. They'll want to know about this.

She took the card and gave him a smile. She tucked it into her cleavage.

"Thank you, Mr. Stark. Thank you for trying to help. I believe you are telling the truth, Mr. Stark, but so am I. I will call you if I do remember anything."
