Walking After Midnight (open)
Svalin walked the upper battlements. It was still a few hours before dawn and she couldn't sleep. A dream had woke her and she could not find sleep again so she walked the battlements. There were guards stationed at regular intervals and they nodded to the princess as she passed. Svalin returned their nods as she passed, but that was the extent of her acknowledgment.

Most of the other inhabitants of Asgard were asleep, most were passed out. Asgardians celebrated as hard as they fought. The celebration had been going for days and Svalin had tired of it after the first night. She didn't see the point of drinking excessively for days.

The wind was cold as it whipped over the battlements. A stray thought popped in her head that if she were on Migard, the wind would be warm and it would carry the smell of salt. She was loathe to admit it, but she did miss being on Migard a little. She had been studying Hellenic and Roman warfare tactics and she missed having the books nearby. She also missed chocolate, but that went without saying.

Svalin took a deep breath and stopped walking. She looked out over the city and into the night.

Not everyone is still partying, or at least not all the time. Much as the Asgardians enjoy celebrating their victories, duty always comes first, or at least it does to most.
One such is standing the walls, easy to pick out even from some distance off. When he recognizes his sister, he heads towards her, most of his injuries fading, but enough left to keep one arm in a sling and put a small hitch in his step. Still, he was back to some mix of partying and sentry duty as soon as they let him be.

"Hail and well met, brother," Svalin said when he got near. She didn't look. She knew who it was without looking. He had a /presence/ that was hard to miss. "What brings thee out at this hour?"

"The mead grew warm and the wenches cooled." he responds easily. He generally prefers people think he's entirely as shallow as he acts. Makes the times when thinking doesn't come so easily that much easier. In truth, he was out because, much as he loves a good party, keeping the watch is part of the duties of keeping the realm safe, and that will always come first to the day he dies. "Hail and well met, sister."

"How fares thee? Thou'rt moving much better." She had been concerned about him, but as always he was bouncing back. She was going to miss him when she went to the Avengers. The days and nights since her talk with her father she had done nothing but think on the advice.

It probably was for the best.

"The night ist still," she said. She had already been up here for a few hours.

"Aye, our foes fear us once again, as they should." he agrees. "I fare well enow, I wilt be bounding about again soon enow. And thee?"

"Aye, they should," she agreed. "That ist good to hear. I wast concerned about thee, brother."

She was quiet for a moment. "Sleep doth not come easy this eve," she admitted. "Much doth weigh on my mind."

"Aye, well they shouldst. Else I wouldst need remind them why they tremble and hide. But there wast naught to be concerned for, I wast not drinking that much." he replies, still keeping his tone light.

"What troubles thee?"

"I had a most peculiar dream, but that ist not all that weighs on mine mind. I doth not like leaving you, Asleif and Aridis, but I must. Father ist right that I need time away from thee. I must do my duty to Asgard. And Grandfather's words weigh heavily on mine mind."

Grandfather's words? Interesting. "Wish thee to share what he told thee? And aye... some time away wilt do thee good. We wilt be well enow, though I wilt always miss thee, of course."

It wasn't that she didn't think Asleif could watch over their brother and other sister, it was just Asleif never had to do it before. Asleif was good at thinking of Asleif first, then the others. Svalin had always been responsible for her siblings and to not be was a big change for her.

"Aye."

There was a long moment of silence.

"And in the end times, when Odin All-Father see'st no more,
Consumed by the all-devouring hunger of Fenris,
And Mighty Thor hast departed to battle Jormungandr to the last,
The Eldest scion of Asgard remaining to it shalt quit the throne,
And in Asgard's blackest moment, she shalt fly to her brother's side
And there she shalt meet her first end, born under by the blackest tide
Defending her brother's back.
And then she shalt be the final chosen rider,
And Brunnhilde shalt surrender her leadership and post,
And Svalin shalt lead the final charge of the Valkyrie, choosers of the slain.
And whilst they will be slain to the last, ten spears shalt pierce the Fenris' heart.
Svalin's and Brunnhilde's shalt strike most true, and pierce the Wolf's heart through.
Odin shalt be avenged, and the last two of the Valkyrie shalt fight to the last,
With Brunnhilde as Svalin's shield-maiden, standing before the doors to the throne room."

He frowns. That's a lot to consider. Especially as deeply as he believes that what is said there will happen, however much they wish or do not wish it. He swallows the taste of blood and bile, keeping an even temper, much as the bear seeks to rise in him at this news.

"I can see why thou'rt in black humor."

He nods. "Aye... but mayhap it must needs happen, that thou wilt be there to strike the final blow against the Wolf. Wouldst that I had the strength to change prophecy, sister. I wouldst move the world to save thee pain."

Svalin smiled and released him. "Aye. They needst to see what true warriors art made of. I will miss thee most of all." Svalin loved her sisters, but her brother was more her kindred spirit.

Moira smiles again. "I hope it shall be soon enough. My immediate family like him very, very well." She tries not to think how well they'll still like him once the Issues are Raised. What the Allfather told her was told openly and no secret, but that didn't mean it had gotten lengthy discussion yet. But it didn't take a scholar to know which line of the family was making a divisive choice.
