Family Fallout
Vincent looked up at his brother, waiting for him to speak. Much had happened.

And Kristoff doesn't put his arms around his clearly-upset brother. He's just not in a position to right this moment.

"Then please let me show you my perspective."

"You even made mention of your own first time there. I am sure it seemed like something clever to say at the time. Please recall how you got into the police station when you were eight, Vincent. You were violating people's minds. You know how I feel about that sort of thing; it needs to be stopped. It's 'harmless' by the standards of our childhoods, but it isn't harmless. But of course, you were a child. But not only were you a child, you were displaced into a new situation, you were disoriented, and you certainly weren't going to depend upon the kindness of strangers. You were falling back on what you felt you needed to do, which was to find a way to have control of your situation. Because power, of one fashion or another, is all that can be relied on. That is how a Von Doom thinks, Vincent. We do not trust easily! It comes so hard; and if some sort of a hand is not extended, there is no hope. And this is something I know. That I have known for a very long time. It is something I can understand."
There's a tension in his voice that goes beyond his usual brand of 'pained'.
"You have, on occasion, alluded to an interest in giving other people a chance, but though I have no wish to accuse you of conscious deception, I note this idea only seems to surface when it gives you a cute story or other way of explaining what might otherwise be considered unwise."
There is a 'please wait' gesture just in case Vincent should get the understandable impression it's his turn now. It isn't yet.

"But here we had someone displaced, in circumstances out of his control, who may well have had some of the same experiences you and I did, the same kind of foundation that we should be able to try to comprehend. From the perspective of that common upbringing? What he was doing was relatively harmless. Thinking from his perspective, it was a less-destructive --in his mind -- way of seizing control, falling back on that upon which he could rely. And that was something I could understand. But he was no child, and so I had to acknowledge that he was a grown man taking completely unnecessary aggressive steps. And so I felt that I had to disarm him, to take the upper hand before we could hope to extend a hand."
He sighs. "Which makes it my mistake and my responsibility that it got out of hand, I recognize. I should have known how you'd react."

He's not done. Not nearly done, but he needs to breathe for a moment.

Vincent sits down, feeling the weight of his brother's words impacting upon him. He wants to hide his face, but he keeps looking up at him.

"I was wrong."

It's not a phrase that comes easily, or often, from the young man. He hopes his brother can still understand that.

"I thought I could stick to my words... and I have meant it before, when I've wanted to give people a chance to be better than they might otherwise be."

He swallows hard. "But... but when it was someone... someone from HIM... someone besides you.. I panicked."

"I appreciate your acknowledging that."

"But it brings us to another aspect of the subject."
Kristoff takes a breath.

"Vincent, I love you, but have you ever noticed that you only ever see anything in terms of its direct relation to you, and not its relation to other things?"

"Only ever in hindsight..." Vincent replies quietly.

"It's why I knew to just let you speak." He runs a hand over his face. "Kristoff... I'm very tired... tired of making the same mistakes. Tired of hurting those close to me. Tired of grasping for excuses and apologies so much that I start to lose track of where one begins and the other ends."

He looks up again. "I need help. Before I lose anyone else."

Kristoff sighs. "You are not going to lose me, Vincent. Hurt me, yes. Clearly. But you are most certainly stuck with me in one capacity or another until my death... or Ragnarok. Whichever comes first." His face shows very clear that there was nothing rhetorical about that. And that the literalness still does not feel good. "But yes, I will make an appointment with Dr. Samson."

"I don't want to hurt you anymore Kristoff. I'm tired of that as well." There's an uneasy pause as the literal statement is made.

"I am who I am... but that doesn't mean I can't change myself for the better."

Vincent swallows hard, standing up and approaching hesitantly. He knows he can't be told it will all be all right, but...

"I'm not resuming my magic lessons, not yet. I'd.. I'd like if you would still be willing to teach me how to do the work you do, while I also work on myself."

"I never thought you wanted too, Vincent."

Kristoff's still not in a good place emotionally right now. But he manages to put an arm around Vincent's shoulder.

"We will see. I...do not really know where I will be going with my research in the immediate future. We will see.

Vincent visibly relaxes, at least a little, at that touch.

He nods and rubs his face again. "I am sorely in need of tea before I also try to get some rest. Would you like some as well?" He pauses. "It's that loose-leaf blend I picked up at the Balkan specialty shop."

He shakes his head. "Enjoy it. I need to check on Cassandra and Scotty."

"Please give them my love." Vincent nods.

As he starts to turn away, he pauses.

"There's... one more thing I'd wish to speak to you about, but I believe we both need some time to recuperate first."

Vincent had left a call for his brother to meet him in the kitchenette whenever he was free. He occupied himself in the meanwhile by going over notes for what seemed to be a circuit board written in runic.
