What we do for the Red and White
Bryan Whittaker is a career military man from a line of career military men and if uniforms were the sign of good breeding Lt. Whittaker would be a goddamn Westminster Classic show dog.  He stands at perfect attention awaiting his superior's orders.  Supposedly, he's been ordered in her for a very special new assignment.  If it's like any of the last few "special assignments" he's received from friends of his father this is going to be yet another bug hunt of some kind.

This particular friend of his General Whitaker's, a general himself, already looks like there is already afoot nonsense up with which he will not put.

"Lieutenant, are you aware that Department H has reinstituted the Alpha Flight program?"

'Sir, yes sir." He does not make eye contact. For some reason they think some things in this world, like mutation, are contagious rather then genetic. Therefore, it's not just protocal to not look at them, it's self-preservation.

"At the present time, Lieutenant, that program consists of a bunch of superhuman teenagers muddling about as best they can with no particular training to speak of, much less a passing resemblance to military personnel. Considering the program's reputation for casualties in far better circumstances, it seems incumbent upon the government to put some effort toward fixing that."

"What are my orders, sir?" And why do I have a bad feeling about this?

The genera slightly moves a file of papers. "You're to report to the listed location and ... take command of the children in question. The usual standard is that the job comes with some specialized equipment, namely the Vindicator suit. I'm sure it won't be too difficult to figure out. You're to generally attempt to decrease their chances of getting themselves killed or causing an actual or diplomatic disaster during your time with them." There's the slightest of odd inflections on that last part, perhaps even more pleased with himself than the significant-pause-'take command' before.

He frowns a little. "I was unaware they were a military force, sir. Will I still be reporting to the army?" Either way, the answer won't be something he wants to hear. He's counting on it.

"Basically. You're being seconded to Department H, but of course the term for which you're being lent out is only temporary." Beat. "Just indefinite. We'll keep in touch and let them know when we need you back."

Of course I am - and of course Dad will. It's a fleeting thought. Duty comes first no matter what they think of him. "When will I assume possession of the suit, sir?"

"Tomorrow. Here's some of the paperwork involved."

Predictably, the general drops the papers just as he reaches out for them. Bryan makes sure to crouch rather then bend over and retrieve them. Once the papers are collected, he waits to be dismissed.

He'll take his time before, "All right. Again, we'll keep in touch. Dismissed."
