Holds?
Is not having holds that big of a problem? I've had several folks comment on it (and it's strange to me, personally, but I tend to whip out applications in one sitting).

the only issue is for those who aren't fast they spend a lot of time on a certain character and then to see it taken so quick sucks. :(

Like right now I know a girl working on a persephone I've already plotted with for my Hades to help her work her app out but if someone else does it first that really sucks for her

Right and...I'd hate to turn people off the game because they're afraid to try to apply (lest the character be sniped, a la Ebay. ;) ).

I just also get really frustrated when people put on a hold and then don't actually end up apping the character. Makes me feel like I'm wasting my time, you know?

How would a meet in the middle sort of thing sound? Like...person sees game, wants to apply, can't do the entire application right away, but can at least like...decide on character name and some section of the app (like...appearance. Or history. Or whatever.) So they put that up as a "hold" and have like...a week to finish the app before the deity/PB goes up for grabs again.

I would think you would need at least three, maybe four set conditions. But also, make it uniform. I do think it is a bit much, and I don't think it will guarantee someone will app. But there isn't really a reason to not try, (who knows, I might be surprised by it.)

I'm also not clear on where you would put that section. Would you list it on the app page, or would someone have to scroll down to find it? Would you include PBs in the holds, or are those always going to be first come first serve?

My point in asking for it is I figure if someone has to put in the effort to come up with something right up front, they'll be more likely than to go, "I want to app [Deity!]/[PB!]" and then go away and never come back. Three or four conditions cover a good third to half of the app (if you consider there are 9 required character things if you're apping a mortal and 11 if apping a deity). That makes for a pretty big chunk.

And I haven't even gotten to layout yet, but yes...assuming this gets put into place, the layout would change. Probably holds would have to be listed on both the app and cast pages.

PBs could be held as well.

I was thinking of the smaller sections really- Name, Deity, PB, and then something fairly easy to come up with (such as appearance.) Make the larger section required and then whatever parts they already know/want (such at Deity/PB, or Name/PB, or Name/Deity). That way they have a few options in there.

We've discussed my feelings on holds. In all honesty, I feel like a hold gives me a chance to relax. I get busy, or I get distracted because I'm not feeling particularly creative right at that time- a hold gives me a chance to not force myself to write something that in the end I'll look back at and be personally displeased with. I know I'm already there, currently.

With a hold I have the time to sit and think things through completely. Without them, I honestly feel like I'm taking a timed exam in which I have to constantly check the clock to see how much more time I have left. And then, after putting in all that work, if someone else (who, without me having a way to know, was apping the same person) got their app in before mine? I would really consider just not applying again. Even with a short app, it is a lot of thought, time and work put into a creation only to have to start over and run the same risk with every character you want to app.

As having a game I run myself, I know how holds go. People put them in, never finish the app, and it can go on a bit. But outside of a little upkeep, I don't care. They either finish or they don't. It doesn't affect me, really. Because I'll have other applicants later on.

I do think, however, that a lack of holds can turn some people away. As I said- it might be a short app, but it is still someone work and time.

It is not, for me, at least? It can just be frustrating if for whatever reason someone chooses the face you have your heart set on or the deity you've written for and might pop-in at the same time. I think it's also good because current players can see who is considering joining (and possibly comment on it and maybe work out a backstory).

It's not necessary, but I think it's nice. c:

Thanks for commenting! :)

What do you think of the compromise idea up there?

I... actually think that your compromise idea is excellent. In fact, I really wish most games would incorporate it. I can get a little flaky, I'll admit, but I would probably go through with more applications (and not forget, to boot) or not reserve at all if I had to put a little bit of work into it to begin with. I've been known to abuse the extension policy in some games, so you might want to toss in something like, "holds last for one week with only one extension granted"?

Mmm. May just go with it and see what happens. ;)

I don't think anyone would be against it if ya'll changed your mind(s?) on it, so just go with your gut instinct!

Totally after the fact, but I like your new take on holds. I'm a super slow apper, and I've been working on Persephone for...oh, at least 2 weeks now, and I was seriously paranoid the whole time that someone was going to app her first while I was trudging through. So, thank you for allowing holds now, it is seriously appreciated!
