On George Carlin
Coast-to-Coast AM is going to be replaying Art Bell's `99 interview with George Carlin for the final hour. I'm already planning on pulling an all-nighter to run some AM errands, this is even more reason.
My personal experience, anyway.
When I was a kid... 10? 11? No older than that... I was at the home of a friend of my mom's, and started watching videos with a bunch of people, mostly teenagers. One was a George Carlin video (I think it was Carlin at Carnegie). It just hooked me.
There was a used-book-and-record store within walking distance of me. I got my copy of Class Clown on vinyl there. I don't remember where I got my cassette of FM & AM, but I do remember bringing it to school to get some of my classmates hooked.
Back in `01, my then-bf and I went to Las Vegas. He was calling around to see if there were any shows we'd want to go see. I was mildly startled hearing him buy tickets over the phone without even asking if I was interested... then he told me who it was. I'm so glad I got to see him live. It's a wonderful memory.
Oh, George. You helped my sense of humor evolve. I'm sorry to see you go.
