She had to stay calm. Of course. Nothing to panic about. Just one of the world's most powerful mental patients going toe to to toe against her baby boy.

Yes, yes, Solver was a teenager now. Like that was supposed to help.

She was helping Solver's Little Friends -- or, rather, the New Avengers; it was hard to remember sometimes -- with crowd control. And at around the ninth starstruck girl wearing S-rune accessorites, Vernique wanted to shake her and say that no one was worshipping her son while wearing tacky Flamingo lipstick.

Finally, when it was all over, and all emergency concerns were dealt with... "Sweetheart, can we talk?"

And she hugs him again for a little while. Part of her curses time for letting him get this big, but the rest of her knows that producing a young man -- god. whatever -- for the world was kind of the whole point of a raising a son.

"Okay." Another wry smile. "I'll stop getting all sentimental on you. Wouldn't want to end up asking flash flood victims in Laos to be the ones who didn't get noticed because The Scion's mom was being clingy."
