for Hiro

The quiet bar Leo usually haunted was closed for remodeling. With Leo's luck, it would re-open as the latest zen hotspot--or other some such yuppie bullshit theme club. He'd have to find a new place to relax after work was through. The local cop hangouts were not an option, considering most of the people he worked with didn't like him. Respect and like were two different things, and while Leo had earned their respect, they still didn't like the little sonofabitch.

This watering hole was a few blocks down from his old one. He'd tried to go downtown instead of uptown, but really either way had its serious drawbacks. "Why don't everything stay the goddamn same?" He asked his beer, looking down into it. The bartender looked at him oddly, and Leo waved him off. The place had typical music, typical everything, and at least it wasn't trying to be anything it wasn't. That was a blessing these days. He sat there, looking tense for a man who was on his third beer.

Hiro was the type of man people noticed the moment he walked into a room. It was a little bit eerie how all eyes seemed to shift right to him the second he stepped foot into even the most crowdiest of places. And so was the case tonight. The moment he pushed the door of the bar open and stepped inside, a faint hush fell over the crowd and all eyes turned to him.

He was strange to look at. Oddly beautiful, especially for a man. He made a lot of people uncomfortable because of it, and that had always been the case, even before he was turned. He was slender and almost delicate looking, his features angular and Asian. But his lips were full. His cheekbones high. And despite his Asian appearance, his eyes were a disarming shade of blue. The way he dressed was neat, well put together, tailored nad flattering. Pin striped pants, black shoes. A white button up shirt with the first few buttons left unattended to, and the buttons of his cuffs left lazily undone. His sleeves were rolled up to his elbows. Tonight, his hair was dark but it always was changing.

But it was more than his appearance that kept people looking. It was his aura, just something about him that made him seem almost unreal. The way he moved, completely and strangely graceful made him look almost ghostlike. His pale skin certainly helped.

He made his way over to the bar where he had a seat, and ordered a drink. Not that he needed one. But he ordered anyway and waited for his drink as he turned his head to let his eyes flicker around the bar.

Being the kind of observant guy he was, Leo noticed the shift of the crowd just a beat before he was drawn into it too. The quiet was welcomed, until he saw what had caused it. One man? As the room got back to its bustle, Leo exhaled the breath he was holding, shifting in his seat, put off by the whole damn thing. His entire presence was irritated, especially when he found himself glancing down the row of normal people to catch a glimpse of that one beacon of 'something more.' Leo was only human, afrter all, and some long forgotten moth-like instinct forced him to be drawn to the guy.

When Leo's stomach growled, it took him away from the moment, and he grumbled at the passing tender. "Peanuts, pretzels, something?" Leo's steady diet of take-out chinese food, pizza, and beer nuts had left him a surprisingly good physique, lean with the look of someone expecting to have to run something down. When he noticed that the mysterious man had pretzels close to him on the counter, Leo was up and moved to sit next to him. He tried to make it look like he was just moving for the food--which he was--right? Sitting down with little grace, Leo's hand reached out to gather a handful of the snack, pretending to ignore the fact that at close range, the man was even more alluring.

Hiro waited quietly for his drink, somehow managing to make siting on a barstoole comfortable. He drummed his fingertips against the bartop as his eyes watched the tender make up his drink, though the moment he sensed someone coming in his direction he let his attention slowly shift. He watched as the man with dark hair and suprisingly round eyes sit next to him and reach for the pretzels to snack on. Hiro always had been a sucker for attractive people, but mostly it was eyes that drew him in the most. And he liked this guys eyes, and even though the guy was trying to act as if he wasn't looking at him Hiro knew that he was. He smirked faintly and looked ahead just as his vanilla rum and coke was put down in front of him, and he slid his money over to the bartender.

"Keep the change," he said, his voice surprisingly smooth.

He lifted the glass up and swirled the liquid around, wetting his lips as he drew in the familiar scent. He really just liked the way the drink smelled, and often ordered it just for that fact. After a moment he drew in a sip, and once the cold liquor was swallowed he turned his head again to look over at the man next to him.

"I feel like I might know you from somewhere," he said, though he knew fully well that he didn't. He just wanted to strike up a conversation. "You look a little familiar to me."

The voice slid over him and Leo had to take note that it made the hair on his arms stand on end briefly. Even a complete dolt would recognize that this man was out of the ordinary, and Leo was no dolt even if he had been accused of being socially inept. The drink order, however, pulled a thin line across his mouth, lips pinching together. Vanilla rum. Who ever heard of flavoring liquor? Rum should taste like rum and it should burn all the way down. Still, watching Hiro smell the drink forced Leo to imagine the smell himself, and somehow because the other was clearly enjoying it, he had to enjoy it a little too.

When the man spoke to him, Leo wondered if it was he who had played or been played. With a few quick crunches to finish the pretzels in his mouth, Leo swallowed with an audible (even to human ears) gulp. "Uh, do I? I think I'd remember knowing you. I'll bet you don't look familiar to anybody." By familiar he meant normal, or anything less than ethereal.

Hiro smiled faintly and let the glass settle back down on the countertop as he shifted his body a little to face Leo better. He wet his lips slowly, letting the tip of his tongue drag over his lower lip as his blue eyes drifted over the other man's features. First his mouth, then his nose, then finally his eyes.

"I suppose I don't," he finally said, letting his fingertips settle against his mouth for a moment before the hand it belonged to waved idly at the air. "I look..." he paused, lilting his head to the side with a more human smile. "Strange. I know." He held his hand out to Leo then, "I'm Hiro."

Mesmerized by the movement of Hiro's hands, Leo's eyes fluttered open and shut as if forcefully trying to rid himself of the desire to watch them.

"Do you know?" Leo wondered out loud, not paying a terrible amount of mind to how that might have sounded. Strange was an unfortunate word, and even he felt an odd pang at that description. Why did he want to say the man was beautiful? The adjective pawed annoyingly at the back of his brain, begging to be let inside fully.

Stretching his head forward, he took up the offered one in a firm handshake. It was almost too firm, since Leo was trying to prove something--he was always trying to prove one thing or another. "Hiro." He repeated.

Leo's words caused the smile on Hiro's lips to grow, so much so that it reached his eyes and made them light up with obvious amusement. He laughed softly, tipping his head to the opposite side as he shook Leo's hand. The grip didn't surprise him. Leo seemed like the type who wanted to establish authority over people for whatever reason, and that was fine.

"Do you always repeat things?" he asked, arching a brow before he finally released Leo's hand to draw his own away. He let his fingertips brush against the very inside of Leo's palm, against the life lines of them before his hand dropped away completely. "Or is your name the same as mine?"

Dumbly, Leo's hand stayed hovering outstretched for a couple beats before he pulled it back. All of his movements were starting to come in staggered, oddly timed spurts. It took a lot to make him uncomfortable and anyone who knew him would be perplexed at his behavior. Folding his fingers in against the palm that Hiro had touched, Leo formed his hand into a gun and clicked his cheek against his teeth. "You're hilarious." Though it was spoken in a way that meant Leo wasn't sure it Hiro was funny at all.

Turning back to his beer, an American microbrew thankyouverymuch, Leo shook his head. "My name is definitely not Hiro. So I guess I just repeat things--habit. I want to make sure I get the facts right." The facts, like his entire world was made up of sharp bits of truth and nothing more. "I'm Leo though."

Hiro caught the way Leo was moving. It was hard not to notice, especially when you were someone who noticed little subtle things in the way that Hiro did. A small smile tugged at the corners of his mouth and he kept his gaze trained upon Leo's face, though really he wanted to look at his hands. He could see them out of the corner of his eye though, and the way the other man folded his fingers in against his palm like that made Hiro smile a tiny bit more.

"Well," he said, lettling his fingertip trail along the side of his glass, tracing a design absently in the condensation of it, "It's nice to meet you, Leo."

"They're remodeling my usual hangout." He picked up with that tidbit of information after a couple moments of silence. "That's why I'm stuck in this place--can't go straight home after work." It was just too depressing. Somehow a few beers out was so much better than sitting in front of the television drinking alcohol alone, the only company your dog.

At the risk of sounding cliche, he flicked his gaze back at Hiro and ventured a question. "Is this where you usually come?" Often times people had habits, specific haunts that belonged to them.

Hiro took a sip of his drink, pausing to peer over at Leo from behind the rim of his glass. When he drew the glass away from his mouth and set it back on the bartop, he wet his lips, pulling the lower one into his mouth for a moment as he smiled. He shook his head then.

"I don't really have a usual hangout," he finally said after a moment, "I just sort of..." he paused, glancing around the place. "Go where the wind blows me."

Leo snorted a bit and nodded. "One of those guys. Yeah, that seems to suit you." From the snap judgments he was starting to make about the man, anyway. Leo had his whole personality mapped out already, mysterious, the guys who always flitted in and had something cool to say to woo pretty much everything in sight before the drifted back out. Lots of criminals had those sorts of personalities, alluring users.

Even if Leo would never admit it, he'd been wrong about people before though. His snap judgments only tended to work for him in the field and failed miserably in his personal life.

"Yeah," Hiro said with a faint laugh. "One of those guys."

It was obvious that Leo had all ready judged him. That was fine. Hiro didn't mind it, really. Given Leo's personality so far, Hiro hadn't expected anything less. It seemed to him that Leo had some sort of an inferiority complex and for some reason felt like he had something to prove to everyone. Why that was, well, Hiro had no idea. But he was curious.

He didn't ask any questions, though. In fact he went about his own business, not entirely sure he wanted to strike up any more conversation. No, if Leo wanted to talk. He would.

Sitting in silence for awhile, Leo tried to pretend that he too had gone on about his evening, paying no more mind to Hiro now. But as the night progressed, and as the pretzel bowl emptied, Leo tapped the very last crunchy twist on the counter, taking in a deep breath and angling his body toward the other man. From the look of it, he'd just been waiting to talk some more and he couldn't hold it back any longer.

"Did I offend you with that? 'Cause I do that. People say I do that. You stopped talking after it and I couldn't help but think that maybe I pissed you off." Even though Hiro's body language said nothing of the sort; the man moved with liquid calm. "You're just--christ the room stopped when you waltzed in and half the damn room is still staring at you and you're just sitting there. You know?" Some of it didn't make sense, but Leo was blurting it out all at once.

Hiro maintained his silence, sipping at his drink every once and a while as he sat there. He would glance around occassionally, people watching like he always did. He noticed that the second his eyes would fall on someone, they'd look away to pretend as if they hadn't been looking. Even when he'd been human, that sort of thing had happened sometimes. But now it happened entirely too often.

When he heard Leo's voice, he turned his head to look over at him. He'd been waiting for the other man to start speaking, though he hadn't expected the man to say words like that. It was interesting, really.

"No," he answered. "I'm not offended." He wet his lips and narrowed his eyes just a bit, "What exactly about me is bothering you?"

That shut him up for a second because the question was so valid he had no choice but to consider its true answer. After a couple moments, he pulled back the last swig of his fourth beer and shrugged. "I don't know. I guess people like you always end up causing me problems."

Even if that answer was convoluted, it hung out between them like some form of confession.

Hiro ran the tip of his tongue over the edge of his teeth in thought as he gazed over at Leo in question. It was strange, the way Leo had voiced himself like that. In all reality, it just didn't make a whole lot of sense to Hiro but he'd learned a long time ago that many things about humans just did not make sense.

"And what do you mean by that?" he asked after a moment.

Leo was apt and ready to blame all of his problems on other people, whether it be for their personality, or type, or something as stupid as their appearance. His mouth was a little loose tonight, fueled by fermentation.

"Pretty much the people I find attractive, or interesting, or even just worth talking to--end up being either completely crazy or stab me in the back somehow." He had the worst time making friends, and an even more difficult time with anything more than friends. That was why he threw himself into his work so much.

Hiro just watched Leo intensely, taking the man's expressions in as he spoke. He noted each little shift in the way his eyes looked or the way Leo's body would tense, then relax. It was sort of sad, sometimes, how lonely a person could be. And Leo was definitely lonely.

"I see," Hiro answered after a moment. "Well, I can't say that I'm not complicated. But you shouldn't hold me responsible for other people's mistreatment of you."

If Leo knew what Hiro was thinking, he would have been indignant about the whole thing. But at the moment, it was true--he was lonely, and a little pathetic to boot. "I shouldn't, but I probably will. Not that we're going to see each other ever again probably, so I don't think you have that much to worry about."

Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out his wallet, getting ready to square up his tab. "Unless you get in trouble with the law a hell of a lot, I might see you."

Part of Leo wanted to tell the man to stop touching his mouth like that. It pulled his eyes in that direction and just watching the movement made the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end. It was a good sensation, even if it felt a little out of control for such a simple gesture.

"Yeah, I'm a cop. Detective." He'd recently been moved up in the ranks to the job he'd gone into the academy for. "What do you do? Other than blow in and out."

"Ah, I see," Hiro said simply with a smile, letting his fingertips drum against his lips a little before his hand dropped to his lap.

It wasn't a big shock to him, now Leo's behavior made a tiny bit more sense to him. He probably immersed himself in his work. And work such as the kind Leo did probably left him jaded even more so than he usually would have been.

"I collect art," he said honestly, "Kind of... like an art dealer. I collect and trade, sell. Buy."

"I've never understood art." He shook his head, the very idea of making a whole career out of it mind-boggling to him. Not that he didn't think it was a perfectly valid way to spend one's time, but he was clueless when it came to value. Looking slightly embarrassed by that, he covered up with a shrug. Real men didn't need to think about ridiculous things like art--right?

Hiro shrugged, too, smiling a little. Art wasn't for everyone. Hiro had been an artist before he'd been changed, but once he'd been changed that creativity died. It was rare that vampires could keep that spark going after they'd been changed.

"A lot of art isn't suppose to be understood, I guess," he said after a moment. "So... if I wanted to see you again, I'd have to get into some sort of... legal trouble?" he asked with a slightly flirtatious air.

Who would create something that wasn't meant to be understood? Leo wondered, shifting around on his bar stool a little bit. Perhaps Hiro would. He was ready to get up and go when the playful question came and it stopped Leo from going anywhere. Begrudgingly, he liked that tone and it made his heart trip up a couple beats in his chest.

"I can't possibly encourage legal trouble. But you'd have to be involved in homicide, or missing persons, or maybe an assault. Any plans for any of that?"

Hiro caught that pick up of Leo's pulse. He could hear it, feel it, and it made him smile a little more. Why he was so interested in a human was confusing, but he went with where the wind blew him like he said. And right now it was blowing him at Leo.

"I only bite when it's wanted," he said with a playful smile.

It was true. He only fed from people who were pliable and wanted physical attention, and he didn't feed enough to kill them. He didn't bleed them dry. He took just enough to sate his need and then he let them go, feeling mostly drunk.

The choice of words amused Leo and he finally broke into a smile, one that reached up into his dark, round eyes. "Then I could hardly charge you for that. Leo's smile caused Hiro's smile to grow, to reach his eyes, too. He slipped up off of the bar stool and smoothed the material of his shirt before he reached over to snag a pen off of the bartop. He took a hold of Leo's hand then and wrote his number on it, then let go, the pen dropping back down on the bartop.
