for Hiro

The quiet bar Leo usually haunted was closed for remodeling. With Leo's luck, it would re-open as the latest zen hotspot--or other some such yuppie bullshit theme club. He'd have to find a new place to relax after work was through. The local cop hangouts were not an option, considering most of the people he worked with didn't like him. Respect and like were two different things, and while Leo had earned their respect, they still didn't like the little sonofabitch.

This watering hole was a few blocks down from his old one. He'd tried to go downtown instead of uptown, but really either way had its serious drawbacks. "Why don't everything stay the goddamn same?" He asked his beer, looking down into it. The bartender looked at him oddly, and Leo waved him off. The place had typical music, typical everything, and at least it wasn't trying to be anything it wasn't. That was a blessing these days. He sat there, looking tense for a man who was on his third beer.

"They're remodeling my usual hangout." He picked up with that tidbit of information after a couple moments of silence. "That's why I'm stuck in this place--can't go straight home after work." It was just too depressing. Somehow a few beers out was so much better than sitting in front of the television drinking alcohol alone, the only company your dog.

At the risk of sounding cliche, he flicked his gaze back at Hiro and ventured a question. "Is this where you usually come?" Often times people had habits, specific haunts that belonged to them.

Hiro took a sip of his drink, pausing to peer over at Leo from behind the rim of his glass. When he drew the glass away from his mouth and set it back on the bartop, he wet his lips, pulling the lower one into his mouth for a moment as he smiled. He shook his head then.

"I don't really have a usual hangout," he finally said after a moment, "I just sort of..." he paused, glancing around the place. "Go where the wind blows me."

Leo snorted a bit and nodded. "One of those guys. Yeah, that seems to suit you." From the snap judgments he was starting to make about the man, anyway. Leo had his whole personality mapped out already, mysterious, the guys who always flitted in and had something cool to say to woo pretty much everything in sight before the drifted back out. Lots of criminals had those sorts of personalities, alluring users.

Even if Leo would never admit it, he'd been wrong about people before though. His snap judgments only tended to work for him in the field and failed miserably in his personal life.

"Yeah," Hiro said with a faint laugh. "One of those guys."

It was obvious that Leo had all ready judged him. That was fine. Hiro didn't mind it, really. Given Leo's personality so far, Hiro hadn't expected anything less. It seemed to him that Leo had some sort of an inferiority complex and for some reason felt like he had something to prove to everyone. Why that was, well, Hiro had no idea. But he was curious.

He didn't ask any questions, though. In fact he went about his own business, not entirely sure he wanted to strike up any more conversation. No, if Leo wanted to talk. He would.

Sitting in silence for awhile, Leo tried to pretend that he too had gone on about his evening, paying no more mind to Hiro now. But as the night progressed, and as the pretzel bowl emptied, Leo tapped the very last crunchy twist on the counter, taking in a deep breath and angling his body toward the other man. From the look of it, he'd just been waiting to talk some more and he couldn't hold it back any longer.

"Did I offend you with that? 'Cause I do that. People say I do that. You stopped talking after it and I couldn't help but think that maybe I pissed you off." Even though Hiro's body language said nothing of the sort; the man moved with liquid calm. "You're just--christ the room stopped when you waltzed in and half the damn room is still staring at you and you're just sitting there. You know?" Some of it didn't make sense, but Leo was blurting it out all at once.

Hiro maintained his silence, sipping at his drink every once and a while as he sat there. He would glance around occassionally, people watching like he always did. He noticed that the second his eyes would fall on someone, they'd look away to pretend as if they hadn't been looking. Even when he'd been human, that sort of thing had happened sometimes. But now it happened entirely too often.

When he heard Leo's voice, he turned his head to look over at him. He'd been waiting for the other man to start speaking, though he hadn't expected the man to say words like that. It was interesting, really.

"No," he answered. "I'm not offended." He wet his lips and narrowed his eyes just a bit, "What exactly about me is bothering you?"

That shut him up for a second because the question was so valid he had no choice but to consider its true answer. After a couple moments, he pulled back the last swig of his fourth beer and shrugged. "I don't know. I guess people like you always end up causing me problems."

Even if that answer was convoluted, it hung out between them like some form of confession.

Hiro ran the tip of his tongue over the edge of his teeth in thought as he gazed over at Leo in question. It was strange, the way Leo had voiced himself like that. In all reality, it just didn't make a whole lot of sense to Hiro but he'd learned a long time ago that many things about humans just did not make sense.

"And what do you mean by that?" he asked after a moment.

Leo was apt and ready to blame all of his problems on other people, whether it be for their personality, or type, or something as stupid as their appearance. His mouth was a little loose tonight, fueled by fermentation.

"Pretty much the people I find attractive, or interesting, or even just worth talking to--end up being either completely crazy or stab me in the back somehow." He had the worst time making friends, and an even more difficult time with anything more than friends. That was why he threw himself into his work so much.

Hiro just watched Leo intensely, taking the man's expressions in as he spoke. He noted each little shift in the way his eyes looked or the way Leo's body would tense, then relax. It was sort of sad, sometimes, how lonely a person could be. And Leo was definitely lonely.

"I see," Hiro answered after a moment. "Well, I can't say that I'm not complicated. But you shouldn't hold me responsible for other people's mistreatment of you."

If Leo knew what Hiro was thinking, he would have been indignant about the whole thing. But at the moment, it was true--he was lonely, and a little pathetic to boot. "I shouldn't, but I probably will. Not that we're going to see each other ever again probably, so I don't think you have that much to worry about."

Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out his wallet, getting ready to square up his tab. "Unless you get in trouble with the law a hell of a lot, I might see you."

Hiro lifted a hand up to his lips, his fingertips brushing against them in thought as he let his eyes flicker downwards. He watched Leo pull out his wallet and then he lifted his attention back up to the man's face.

"Why do you say that?" he asked, arching a brow, "Are you in law enforcement?"

Part of Leo wanted to tell the man to stop touching his mouth like that. It pulled his eyes in that direction and just watching the movement made the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end. It was a good sensation, even if it felt a little out of control for such a simple gesture.

"Yeah, I'm a cop. Detective." He'd recently been moved up in the ranks to the job he'd gone into the academy for. "What do you do? Other than blow in and out."

"Ah, I see," Hiro said simply with a smile, letting his fingertips drum against his lips a little before his hand dropped to his lap.

It wasn't a big shock to him, now Leo's behavior made a tiny bit more sense to him. He probably immersed himself in his work. And work such as the kind Leo did probably left him jaded even more so than he usually would have been.

"I collect art," he said honestly, "Kind of... like an art dealer. I collect and trade, sell. Buy."

"I've never understood art." He shook his head, the very idea of making a whole career out of it mind-boggling to him. Not that he didn't think it was a perfectly valid way to spend one's time, but he was clueless when it came to value. Looking slightly embarrassed by that, he covered up with a shrug. Real men didn't need to think about ridiculous things like art--right?

Hiro shrugged, too, smiling a little. Art wasn't for everyone. Hiro had been an artist before he'd been changed, but once he'd been changed that creativity died. It was rare that vampires could keep that spark going after they'd been changed.

"A lot of art isn't suppose to be understood, I guess," he said after a moment. "So... if I wanted to see you again, I'd have to get into some sort of... legal trouble?" he asked with a slightly flirtatious air.

Who would create something that wasn't meant to be understood? Leo wondered, shifting around on his bar stool a little bit. Perhaps Hiro would. He was ready to get up and go when the playful question came and it stopped Leo from going anywhere. Begrudgingly, he liked that tone and it made his heart trip up a couple beats in his chest.

"I can't possibly encourage legal trouble. But you'd have to be involved in homicide, or missing persons, or maybe an assault. Any plans for any of that?"

Hiro caught that pick up of Leo's pulse. He could hear it, feel it, and it made him smile a little more. Why he was so interested in a human was confusing, but he went with where the wind blew him like he said. And right now it was blowing him at Leo.

"I only bite when it's wanted," he said with a playful smile.

It was true. He only fed from people who were pliable and wanted physical attention, and he didn't feed enough to kill them. He didn't bleed them dry. He took just enough to sate his need and then he let them go, feeling mostly drunk.

The choice of words amused Leo and he finally broke into a smile, one that reached up into his dark, round eyes. "Then I could hardly charge you for that. You'll have to come up with a less illegal way of seeing me again if that's something you want." He hesitated a second. "Unless you're looking to avoid me, in which case, you're golden."

Leo's smile caused Hiro's smile to grow, to reach his eyes, too. He slipped up off of the bar stool and smoothed the material of his shirt before he reached over to snag a pen off of the bartop. He took a hold of Leo's hand then and wrote his number on it, then let go, the pen dropping back down on the bartop.

"I guess it's up to you if you want to avoid me or not," he said with a smile.

The cop-instinct to jerk his hand away was overridden by the strong desire to be touched by this person. He dropped his eyes to watch the scrawl of the pen, revealing the kind of information that unlocked Hiro to him in a way.

"All right. I guess it is." He put his wallet back into his pocket and searched for his keys, fumbling more than anything.

Hiro didn't say anything else after that, instead he simply sat back down and watched Leo with a faint smile. He liked Leo. He was interesting. Dark and broody and so many other things, Hiro was certain. And those things? Hiro wanted to find them all out, if he could.
