Harrison, Leah
Harrison was lying on a bench outside under a streetlamp. The halogen bulb spilled cool light around him and he looked as if he could have been on stage instead of just out on a curb. He didn't have a home to speak of, and most nights he just roamed around, dodging cops and talking to people. It helped that he was a vampire; the talents that came along with that unnatural blood were helpful tools to have for a street kid.

But with the advantages came the disadvantages, namely the whole burn in the daylight caveat. He did his best each morning to find a suitable hiding spot, whether it be in a cemetery, or under the streets he walked at night. There were a few homeless shelters he frequented to get showers, but he always turned down the offer of food or clothing, much to people's dismay. Tonight, his hair was wet from a recent trip to the Ninth Street shelter facilities. When he heard footsteps on the otherwise silent sidewalk, he sat up quickly, hoping it wasn't a cop bent on moving him along.

Leah nodded her head in agreement with Harrison. She knew that she was right, but it helped to talk to someone who wasn't Leo because Leo had a way of telling her what to do and not letting her decide things for herself. Or, well, not wanting her to. Leah realized it was mostly because of the terrible things he'd seen, though. She could hardly blame him.

When Harrison mentioned having to go to the bathroom, she looked at him in slight surprise. A soft laugh escaped her and she reached out to gently tug the sleeve of his shirt.

"We're like, a block away, you can wait can't you?"

He fluttered his eyes closed, aware of how warm she was and how much it contrasted to the air surrounding her skin. Harrison could forget things, like blood and hunger. But when they flickered to his mind, he had an impossible time shaking them, especially when his physiology kicked in.

"No, I totally can't. I think--I think there's a place just over there. Wait here, okay? I'll be right back." His brain was working overtime as he walked backwards away from her, out of her grasp. It was true, he couldn't wait, so at least that part wasn't a lie. He gave her one last look before turning and running toward the alley that was back a few feet, ducking into the shadows. Once there, he looked around, panicked and not knowing what to do.

Leah furrowed her brow and gave him a strange look, but she let him go. If he had to go that badly, well, she wasn't going to tell him no.

She stood there quietly, a soft sigh escaping her lips as she watched him disappear, and she wasn't sure what to do then. So she just waited, crossing her arms over her chest as she stood there. When she was walking home alone, she was on a mission, but just standing there waiting she felt a little nervous.

Finding someone from whom to feed quietly had never been easy, but doing it under such serious time constraint made the job even more nerve wracking. He didn't have to go very far to find someone loitering. People were so often thrown away like garbage, it wasn't entirely out of the ordinary to find them sitting amongst the dumpsters between buildings.

When he was finished, he cleaned himself up, leaving the person alive, but so stunned he would probably just sleep it off like a bad bender. Returning about 15 minutes later, he looked as if he'd had a workout, cheeks pink from the blood running through him, just enough to tide him over so he didn't lose it around Leah. "Sorry." He said sheepishly.

Leah was starting to get impatient and a little worried after a few minutes. Honestly, how long did something like this take? She sighed softly and wandered over to the curb where she sat, but after a few more minutes she got antsy and got to her feet again, intending to look for him. Then, there he was. She nearly ran into him, and her eyes went a little wide.

"That's okay," she said after a moment, "Are you okay? I was getting worried."

The way he stood was incredibly firm, as rooted as an oak. His presence was somehow stronger now too. Putting out his hand, he caught her shoulder so they wouldn't collide and when he removed it, he was horrified to see a small smear of blood on her clothes where his hand had been.

"I--I'm fine." He glanced down at his hand, seeing the smudge he'd missed during the clean up. It was a stark red against his skin and he couldn't hide it. "Damnit, I must have scraped my hand on something." It even sounded lame to his own ears. Clutching his hand to his chest, he looked up at Leah. "We should get back to your place."

Leah was surprised how strong his grip on her shoulders was. She blinked and just stared up at him for a second, and she didn't notice the blood until he looked at his hand and she followed his gaze.

"You're bleeding? Let me see," she said softly as she reached out to try and take a hold of his hand so she could examine it. "I can get it cleaned up at my house..." she mumbled absently as she tried to get a look.

Harrison was adamant about not letting her see. His strength was immense, and trying to unfurl his arm was like trying to move stone. "No, no it's fine. I can clean it up when we get to your place." If she did it, he knew that she'd notice the fact there wasn't a wound to be found.

He started walking again, hoping she'd forget about it and follow him. Her house wasn't far, but he thought maybe she'd just forget about the supposed injury before they even got there. That, he knew, wasn't likely, but there wasn't much else he could do besides hope.

Leah struggled for a few moments, trying to let Harrison let her have a look, but he was a lot stronger than she'd anticipated. She didn't remember him being so strong. When he pulled away and started to walk ahead, she blinked in confusion but she followed.

"You're acting a little strange," she said softly, though she supposed he might have been tired. Living on the streets, he probably didn't get good sleep. "You don't need stitches, do you?"

"No, of course not." He glanced over his shoulder, pausing and waiting for her to catch up. It made him feel weird that she noticed his strange behavior. Maybe this had been a bad idea. Maybe he should have just told her she'd made a mistake and he wasn't who she thought he was.

When they got to her house, he was afraid Leo might be home. Shifting anxiously from one foot to the other, he waited for her to unlock the door.

"Good," Leah said, trying to lighten the air because it felt so heavy. Being sensitive to those sorts of things bothered her, but she'd learned to deal with it over time.

She unlocked the door and stepped inside, listening for Leo. She could hear music or the TV, but she motioned for Harrison to go down the stairs to the basement area, where she stayed.

Heeding her gesture, Harrison went down the stairs quickly, thankful he probably wasn't going to have to run into Leo. For some reason, he thought he'd have a harder time hiding things from him. Though clearly he wasn't having an easy go hiding them from Leah.

He was still holding his hand to his chest, but since he wasn't actually bleeding, he wasn't getting any blood on his clothes. Looking around, it was the same as he remembered it, flared with her style that he appreciated so much. "Thanks for inviting me." He said, also trying to keep his voice bright so that she didn't worry about him.

Leah closed the door gently and locked it up behind her before she headed down the stairs quietly. She flipped on the light when she reached the bottom and smiled a little bit.

"Your welcome," she told him. "Um, the bathroom is there, I have some bandaids and stuff in the cabinet," she added as she pointed in the direction of the bathroom. "Do you need help?"

She started to take off her scarf so she could hang it up on the free standing coatrack, then she started to undo the buttons of her coat.

The place was all very vintage looking. Old hollywood posters were framed on the walls, old classic furniture though the couch thankfully was pretty comfortable.

Now that he was downstairs, he seemed a little bit more comfortable. He shook his head when she asked if he needed help, and made a beeline for the bathroom. Once there, he was so eager to get the blood off of him and put his mistake behind him that he completely bypassed bandaging himself as if he'd really gotten a cut.

When he returned, he looked pink and warm, the blood he'd drunk really settling into his veins and making him seem much more human. Perhaps she would just think it was because it was so much warmer in here. "Good as new." He smiled.

She had hung her jacket up and had wandered into the little kitchen area to rummage around for something to eat. She needed to go grocery shopping, but she hadn't had much time lately and she was debating heading on up to Leo's kitchen and seeing what he had when Harrison came back out. She turned to look at him, smiling a little before her brow stitched together.

"You didn't need a bandage?" she asked, "I don't even see a cut," she added with a puzzled expression.

She wasn't sure why that bothered her, but she just felt like something was off. She trusted Harrison though. He always had been sweet, but there was something different about him. When she lifted her gaze back up to his face, he didn't look so pale anymore. She wondered if it had been the cast of the moonlight that had made him look so pale or if it was the heat of the house that brought out the color in his cheeks.

"All right," she said, placing a hand on her hip. "Harrison. Are you sure you're all right?"

He looked immediately guilty when confronted with that hand on her hip. Appearing interested in everything around Leah except Leah herself, Harrison shifted uncomfortably from one foot to the other. "I don't want you to hate me." He blurted honestly. Didn't humans hate what he was? Leah certainly would--she was kind and good and the opposite of everything that vampires were.

The question was, did he come clean and explain what had really happened to him? In the short time since their reunion, Harrison had felt the urge to reveal the truth grow exponentially inside of him. It was almost too big to hold onto now, especially since she'd noticed the lack of a cut.

Hearing him say something like that made Leah very nervous and she just watched his face for a moment before she stepped forward, letting her hand drop away form her hip.

"Harrison, I'm not... why would I hate you?" she said softly, shaking her head, "You're my friend. Whatever is going on with you, I won't hate you for it, all right?"

"I don't--" He started, taking a step forward. "I don't kill people. Not even when it first happened, I didn't kill anyone." An odd way to start an explanation. Maybe even a terrifying way to start one. He had to stop, wondering what he would do if she screamed, or ran upstairs to get Leo.

Not making any move to get closer to her, he instead sat down right where he stood, making himself as nonthreatening as possible. "Don't get Leo. Just don't tell him, and don't scream."

Yes, that was a very scary way to start and explanation, and it stopped Leah cold. Harrison was never violent, not the Harrison that she remembered... But still, why would he say something like that? She held her breath and stayed still as she watched him, her eyes a little frightened by his choice of words.

"Don't tell him what?" she asked, her voice a little shakey, "What do you mean you don't kill people? Harrison... what are you talking about?"

This was that moment that would change everything. Or at least it would change a great deal for Leah if she believed him. Pulling back the veil between reality and what most thought was fantasy was a big decision to make for someone else. But he was tired of being alone in this and if he was going to tell anyone, he wanted it to be her.

Drawing up his knees to his chest, he wrapped lanky arms around them. "I wasn't in jail. I met this guy, actually. Well--I didn't meet him, he just sort of ran into me. I mean, he attacked me." A quick evolution from 'meet' to 'attack,' but it was all still blurry in Harrison's head and probably always would be.

The word 'attack' brought out a different emotion in Leah, and it quickly shifted from fear to worry in the span of three seconds. No wonder he was acting strange, something bad had obviously happened to him, something so bad that he'd felt the need to lie about it in fact.

"Oh my God," she said softly before she moved to drop down to her knees beside him. "Attacked? What... should I get Leo?" she asked, reaching out to touch Harrison's shoulder gently.

"No!" He barked in panic, but quickly reigned himself back in. "No, don't get him." Voice much softer the second time around, Harrison took her hand from his shoulder and held it with both of his own, partly to anchor himself and partly to make it so she couldn't get away.

"The guy bit me. He killed me, actually. I'm dead, or I was dead." Harrison was having trouble explaining it. "You're thinking I'm crazy right now, but I'm not. He brought me back from the dead and then he just left. He just fucking left me."

When he said no like that, it only made her worry more about just what had happened to him. A part of her really wanted to go and get Leo because this was the sort of thing he dealt with all of the time, helping people who had been hurt. But the more Harrison explained, the more confused she got as he held onto her hand.

"That..." she said softly, "That's crazy, Harrison."

It was, it was crazy. But she had dreamt about someone hurting him. That was why she'd been so worried. She had seen someone hurt him and then he had been dead, and now he was telling her this. And it matched up... but vampires weren't real.

"Vampires aren't real..."

He tried not to make his grip hurt her, but as he stared at her hand in his, his fingers tightened. "I'm real." His voice had gone reedy, thinned out by nerves and the truth of what he was saying. Leah knew things, and Harrison had no lies hanging about him, not anymore.

Glancing up at her, he stopped breathing. The rise and fall of his chest ceased, making him look unnatural.

When his grip tightened, she winced a little bit and furrowed her brow. Her arm twisted a little as she tried to pull it back, but he wasn't letting go so she went still as her blue eyes drifted up to look at his face.

"Harrison," she said softly, her voice almost a whisper. "You... I..."

She didn't know what to say. He'd stopped breathing. She blinked and opened her mouth a little in surprise before she shook her head, unable to process what he was telling her.

"This is nuts. You need to breathe," she reached up with her free hand and shook him a little as she gripped his shoulder.
