Full Name: Michael Peter Corner
Age/Birthdate: Seventeen, March 28
Year/House: 7th, Ravenclaw
Blood Status: Michael Corner seems to exist somewhere on the blurred line between pureblooded and something rather murkier. Despite a somewhat established history of magic associated with the family name, you only have to go back about nine generations in order to find that the family was, in fact, established by two muggleborns. However, the line from that point onward is surprisingly pure, dotted only with a few marriages and members of muggle descent. Whether this is political or coincidental is debatable, but certainly Michael's immediate family is far from purist. His mother, notably, is a muggleborn.
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual.
Location: Durham, County Durham.
Affiliation: Dumbledore's Army. Being extremely self-reflective, Michael is certainly not a part of the uneducated masses who are simply shepherded into one side or the other. He takes pride in knowing the facts and being involved; he's certainly no Zacharias Smith, but having all of the information is extremely important to Michael. His decision regarding this war, however, comes down to simple human decency. As a member of the DA, he is staunchly opposed to Lord Voldemort, though he might be more moderate than, for example, Harry Potter. As his mother is a Ministry worker, he has a tenuous loyalty to that institution.
Appearance: There's no denying that Michael Corner is a good-looking boy: with a clean-cut image and a dashing, dimpled smile, he's exactly the sort of fellow most parents would look at and nod toward with approval. A broad, honest face and handsome features have made him the type who doesn't really have to worry very much about keeping up his appearance. So long as he's washed, he's fairly good to go. Very much a man's man when it comes to fashion, there isn't anything particularly noticeable about his apparel. While he likes being in-style, he also enjoys being comfortable: casual slacks and polos make up the majority of his wardrobe.
So what makes Michael stand out in a crowd? Probably the quiet confidence with which he carries himself. Sure he can be a sarcastic arse, but Michael gives the impression that he's constantly at the ready to lend his support where it's needed. Broad-shouldered and well proportioned, he simply seems like someone it would be good to have on your side. There's also the fact that he fits the tall, dark and handsome prototype to a T. With a somewhat swarthy complexion for a Brit and dark, dark hair, he looks like - were it not for that impossible smile - he might be the brooding sort. In fact, Michael's probably at his most conventionally attracting when in a "mood", as his mother puts it. Heathcliff, move over.
Desired PB: Penn Badgley
Personality: If asked to describe their son in one word, the Corners would probably chuckle to themselves and respond, rather quickly, with 'charismatic'. Since the utterance of his first words, Michael seems to have been given the gift of laying it on thick and it's not unusual for his older sister, Lauren, to complain about her brother and his seemingly magical ability to butter his parents up. Being well spoken and devastatingly polite when the situation calls for it, Michael is a people pleaser to the last. He's well-versed at saying the right thing and, quite frankly, meaning it. A formidable conversationalist, he's the sort that seems able to charm the pants off a girl and then switch gears in order to win her parents. Clean-cut, intelligent and energetic, he is well-rounded enough to never be at a loss for conversation starters. To be sure, when one is talking to Michael, they get the distinct impression that they're the only one in the room. He doesn't simply converse for the sake of conversing, though he certainly knows how to get what he wants from any given discussion. Genuinely interested in people, the nod-and-smile approach just doesn't suit Michael's style.
Despite this charming exterior, Mike can be a bit of an arse to those closest to him. While he's motivated academically, and enjoys bringing home excellent grades to his parents, he seems to believe that household chores and summer jobs are beneath him. This slightly conceited blemish in an otherwise pleasant personality has led his sister to label him as lazy and his father to question his work ethics. Hell-bent on a career in the field of magical medicine, Mike assures him that once he gets where he's going, he'll have no trouble taking on the hectic work schedule and high-stakes that come along with such a profession. Until that time, however, one can't help but notice an air of entitlement when he's close to home, an air which is rather indulged by his mother.
In spite of this extroverted nature, Michael can be moody and it tends to disrupt the pleasantries of being social. Known for being a particularly sore loser, people tend to be unsure of when he might blow. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, it's very difficult even for his closest friends to determine what might set him off. Nine out of ten times, Mike lets things slide – unfortunately, it's the tenth time you'll remember. A sulker like none before him, he'll isolate himself from his friends and instead take up his more intellectual pursuits. Reading, especially political biographies and medical thrillers, is often what occupies his time during these intervals. These periods of downtime compliment the somewhat self-reflexive nature that Michael was born with. An acute studier of himself (which could perhaps be seen as yet another sign of a somewhat over-stimulated ego) he has been known to simply lie in his bed for a few hours and analyze the way a conversation went, why certain facts unsettle him and how he might have handled a situation better. Though he has been known on occasion to stick his foot in his mouth, he's also the sort who tends to run through hypothetical conversations in his head, changing up the variables in order to come up with the most ideal result. Unsurprisingly, these rehearsals rarely play-out very well when reality strikes.
Were it not for his generally good-humoured nature, Mike might not be the popular seventeen-year-old he is. Rather too emotionally attached to his friends, he takes the politics of teenage angst rather seriously and tends to find himself in the midst of drama. Unlike most boys his age, he isn't adverse to having a heart-to-heart with his friends in order to sort out a situation, to come to some sort of understanding, or to fix a mistake. If he had, or even understood, the workings of a cellphone, rest assured his would constantly be ringing. His sense of humour tends to come out in good-humoured teasing, especially with his female friends. He's the sort of fellow that gets away with annoying the shite out of someone before making them laugh – most people, he suspects, are constantly on the verge of throttling him. Smart enough to know where to draw the line, he is fairly aware of where the line lies and when not to cross it. For example, he learned rather quickly in his adolescence that if he ever wanted to reproduce, weight jokes were never, ever funny. Nor were ones about teeth, tits, or facial hair. Ever the quick learner, he has adapted to the hormones that comprise the fairer sex and carefully walks the line to the best of his ability.
Three Things an Acquaintance Would Know About Your Character: 1) Michael knows everyone; and sure he might be a bit cocky, but he's not the sort who thinks he's above knowing people names. It tends to surprise his friends that he can even recite the first-years names, but Mike genuinely likes hearing people's stories. It isn't uncommon for him to be found avoiding homework, simply chatting with some random third year. 2) Mike is a sore loser. Fiercely proud of being a Ravenclaw, being a Corner, being a male - it doesn't matter what or who he's playing for, he wants to win. It follows that he is gratuitiously competitive. Board game night at the Corner house generally ends in tears and mini golf ends with broken clubs. 3) Mike likes the ladies. A lot. He hates being on his own and therefore is something of a serial monogomist.
Two Things Close Friends Would Know About Your Character: 1) Despite a veritably charming sense of humour, Mike can be extremely philosophical and is often mulling over life's Big Questions. Specifically, he remains infinitely curious about God and spends a good deal of time reading up on the world's various religions. In fact, the idea of organized religion and the church remains one of the only muggle-related areas with which Michael is intimately acquainted. 2) Mike enjoys conversing with himself in the mirror: "Hello, handsome. My, you're looking mighty fine today!" It's an embarassing habit he can't seem to shake, and when his friends catch him, there's generally hell to pay.
One Deep, Dark Secret: 1) Mike seems the picture of confidence, but he suffers under the pressure of his parents expectations. They see such good and potential in him and he's not always sure he can deliver. He desperately wants to follow in his father's footsteps as a Healer, but the thought of failing terrifies him. Essentially, Mike has a few dozen Daddy issues.
History: Coming from a relatively magical family, nothing of Michael's upbringing has seemed particularly unique or exciting to him. Despite countless trips to Saint Mungos for various hexes, brought on by the evils that are sibling rivalry; despite the constant barrage of flying objects zooming about his head as his mother tries to get the lot of them out the door; despite the shrieks of terror he occasionally hears from his neighbours when a younger Corner gets lose and reeks havoc on the neighbourhood cat; despite all of this, everything in Michael Corner's life seems to fit in exactly as it ought to.
The way they tell the story, Michael Corner and Linda Grieves couldn't stand the sight of one another. In a movie-like twist of fate, the pair of Ravenclaws – who couldn't seem to get along for all the school projects in the world – wound up several years out of school and suddenly in love. Their meeting was nothing whimsical, not chance so much as mundane. Linda had been on the receiving end of a particularly nasty hex – workplace hazard – and Michael had been the attending Healer when she arrived with a particularly nasty case of purple boils and a few extra limbs. Despite some initial huffing that she should get Michael of all people, he managed to coerce the pretty Ministry Worker into a few pints once his shift was finished – the rest, as they say, is history.
If you ask Michael, there isn't any city the world over that can match up to that of Durham. With miles of land in between it and London, it's as far from the bustling urban center of England as one can imagine. Tucked into the corner of England, Linda and Michael made it home when they decided to branch out. Having physical distance from their jobs made them better able, mentally, to disconnect from the busy lives each were afforded in the city. Working for the Ministry and St. Mungo's respectively, there positions have ensured a steady income as well as a steady and constant flow of stress. With their families relatively nearby, Durham seemed ideal in its own, quaint, self-containedness. For Michael, Durham has always been a duality that matches his own at times difficult-to-read nature: it's magnificent cathedrals and crumbling architecture speak to its cultural taste and rich history while its busy streets and shopping centers ensure that one never gets too bored, too quickly.
After the birth of their daughter Lauren, followed quickly by that of Michael, the Corners seemed as if their family set was complete. One boy, one girl, two well-behaved children. It was simply tempting fate to have another. And so, being Ravenclaws -- infinitely wise and all that rubbish -- they toasted to their triumph and celebrated two healthy children with a third. Tessa changed everything. Before the Corners knew it, another slip-up turned into Thomas and it felt as if their house might burst at the seams. One final poor desicion later and the brood was rounded out by the youngest Corners: twins Liam and Keira. If they wanted quiet, the Corners had certainly made one gigantic bluster. Suffice to say, Michael's childhood was never exempt of excitement. Tessa's hellion-like nature and zeast for life quickly became taxing: she seemed to insight mischief wherever she went, and very well could have gone professional was button-pushing a sport. While Lauren was ever an astute, well-behaved child, it tended to be Michael that their parents looked on fondly. His insatiable sense of humour and ability to charm a room made it difficult for them to punish him at any great length and so he simply slipped under the radar.
In this hectic environment, Michael thrived. Though Lauren declares him lazy, it's difficult for his parents to find fault. After all, was it Michael's fault that he was so much more involved than Lauren? Keeping the peace and a fair balance was a challenge for Mr. and Mrs. Corner, finding the overwhelming demands of six children more than even they could have imagined. The dynamics took over any sort of organized or deliberate parenting, cards falling wherever they may. The constant pushing, shoving, laughing, crying: all of it added up into a blur of a childhood.
Michael's magic showed up at around the same time as Lauren's, a fact which neither have ever forgotten for various reasons. It was no surprise when his letter arrived two years after his sister's, nor was it much of a surprise when he was sorted into Ravenclaw as most Corners were before him. Naturally bright and dangerously curious, it wasn't long before Michael proved to live up to this categorization within the overarching scheme of Hogwarts. Quickly settling into life in the castle, the burden of living with many other students hardly phases him and he made fast friends with both Anthony Goldstein and Terry Boot. Though he wasn't a particularly go-getting student, he excelled at those classes which took his interest and was decidedly mediocre in those which did not. It was early days when Michael decided to follow in the steps of his father in order to pursue a career in Healing and with this goal in mind, he had no problem putting aside those classes which weren't going to aide him in getting there.
This somewhat cocky approach to classes didn't, at first, lapse into his social life. For the first four years of his education at Hogwarts, girls seemed a far off and happily distant realm: rather frightening and completely foreign. He'd heard about periods and make-up and sex vis a vis his rather open mother and his somewhat insane sisters and was quite happy in keeping most of his female classmates at a hesitating distance. However, at fifteen, Michael discovered a curious fact: he was rather good-looking. What was more, rather good-looking girls seemed to agree with him! With two fully functioning brains now controlling Michael's every move and action, he became eager to explor the fairer sex and lo, the first opportunity came in an even better package than he could imagine. With Ginny came an entirely new and exciting set of challenges; what drew her to him didn't stop at physical appearance. Rather, it was her fiery spirit and dedication to the DA which cemented for Michael the attraction. Even so, though he joined the DA for Ginny, it certainly isn't why he stayed and it remains to this day one of those facets of life at Hogwarts for which Michael is anything but lazy.
Now in his seventh and final year at Hogwarts, Michael seems more equipped to deal with life: be it academics, sex or fighting an evil most people never even glimpse in the entirety of his life. A serial monogamist with two failed relationships under his belt,
SAMPLES
First-Person Sample: Considering the context of the game, I highly doubt Mike will be posting about asian birds on any sort of regular basis, but at least this gives you a sense of his voice!
Alright! I think it's well overdue that I clear the air on this one little fact, which seems to have been blown so out of proportion, it's not even on the map any longer. I'm not going to deny that Asian birds are fit. I'm really not, so I'll reiterate it again: Asian birds are fit. And sure, okay, every now and then Asian birds have fit moms. What's the problem? The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, right, so it's not like it should be a surprise. And okay, YEAH, maybe I overstepped it when I told Cho her mum was fit but damn! Has anyone seen Cho's mum? Excuse me a moment as I point out that that last statement was laden with sarcasm: I have as of now been unable to discover a way of properly writing sarcasm down on paper.
But while we're on the subject of Asian birds, let's talk about Indian ones. FIT! Italians: really fit. Jews: fit in Yiddish (here's looking at you, Anthony). Brazilian girls have legs a guy like me would kill for, and I'm not certainly never going to turn down any bird from Africa.
So, right. I have a taste for the exotic, but I ask you: should I, Michael Corner, be persecuted for having an open mind? Two open minds, when you think about it. Of course not! Broaden your horizons, right? Open up to the love.
Third-Person Sample: This is Postwarts Mike from an old game, but!
Though the getting ready rituals of a man were hardly comparable to that of a woman, Michael Corner had always been rather particular about what he wore and how he was presented. Being blessed with good looks and a certain panache for making impressions, he verged on the extreme side of meticulous, especially when getting ready for a party. His wide, empty flat, which tended to feel rather emptier now that a good amount of his time was spent with a second person, was littered only with the remnants of his day: papers regarding new emergency policies St. Mungo's was instilling, some patient reports for the following Monday, and his jacket, discarded on the back of his sofa. Beyond these few items, one would be hard pressed to believe the place was actually inhabited, and not simply a place where Home Decor magazines shot their latest spreads.
New pair of designer jeans on and his favourite blue pinstriped artfully doned, Mike ran his hand over his hair one more time before deciding he was ready to depart. Before doing so, he grabbed three parcels -- one small, the other two of medium size -- and apparated in front of Sadie's flat. Without bothering to knock, he opened the door and called out, just in case he frightened her. "Sadie, it's only me." He kicked off his shoes and stared around, spotting a sandy blonde head on the couch who'd turned with giggling glee at the figure in the door. "Andrew, little man! Up top!" He swooped over the couch and held out his large hand for the little boy to slap with a chortle, before ruffling his hair. Wrinkling his nose, Mike spoke as if he and the boy were in on a secret. "Has Sadie been getting ready for ages?"
