Once she sits down, he no longer has the ritual to go by - unfortunate, but he has this feeling she'll get even. Without the ritual to complete, she also gets a little less of a show, as he gets more serious about the course.

He concentrates on the course, hitting the timing just barely on one - nearly a mistake that would have cost him.

Still, he avoids it, and zips down the tunnel... focused enough to make sure he crosses the line... which, when he looks up, places his face almost in her lap... the timer stops at 9.91 seconds... but for his part, he's remaining where he is, somewhat wide-eyed.

Yep, he was not expecting that.
