When he failed to find any open positions, he decided instead to become a police officer (and not just because there was that one cop was chatting up Tsunade, nope), where he was often reprimanded for his unorthodox, though very effective, methods. He was promoted up to homicide, where he stayed for a good number of years, and he became pretty legendary after managing to track down a notorious serial killer as well as solve a few cold cases. He became pretty well known as a great police officer, and he had a blast working with his partner and even taking a new pupil under his wing, a bright guy named Minato who Jiraiya grew pretty fond of. Unfortunately, things seemed to take a turn for the worst. It became obvious that the cop man Tsunade was seeing wasn’t going to just fade out of the background, that the sheer amount of death he saw on a daily basis was never going to let up, and his novel would never be bought by anyone but family and friends, upset the delicate line he walked between happiness and sadness. However, the final straw was the loss of his longtime partner and good friend (who he still has trouble talking about to this day), made him depressed and disenchanted enough to quit the police force and instead he headed off around the world to teach English. He visited places spanning the entire globe, everywhere from Eygpt to China, and loved every minute of it. The numerous rejections he endured from many women became fodder for stories he told his friends, who thought them so amusing (especially with Jiraiya’s word choice), that he decided on a whim to try writing again. He sent the manuscript to his old publisher, fully expecting it to get rejected, but he was surprised when she loved it.

And so began the Flirting Paradise series. Jiraiya had so many stories that he could barely get them out fast enough, and they were far easier to write than his long novel about morality. Humor, it seemed, was his medium, whether unfortunately or not. He traveled the world, no longer to teach English, but because he wanted to, to promote his book and to find inspiration. He quickly became a wealthy man, and he enjoyed a few relationships that might have been serious if he had not given his heart away a long time ago. He was Florentino Ariza, spiritually chaste even if he was physically not. Even though most ladies he became involved with did not like or even understand the concept and often he got slapped for trying to explain how love was a disease and how he liked them, but didn’t love them. Life was going well for him, and he often tried to visit family and friends, even if it was random and sporadic and often involved little notice. He was pretty happy leaping off of tall mountains, hiking through dangerous terrain, and keeping himself occupied with extreme sports, living life to the fullest and trying everything and anything just because he wanted to, and had the time and the money to do so.

However, soon things became boring, repetitive. The allure of far away places dulled as more and more of the world became known to him. Places blurred together and he found himself longing to settle down, and not have to drink himself to a stupor to get some sleep. He looked in the mirror and saw someone who was aging, who had what most people longed for but had nothing really to show for it. The closet ties he had now were to his constantly harassed publisher and the few people he kept in touch with around the world. So he decided to return to the one place he felt at home, for reasons he has yet to admit to himself. He hadn’t kept in touch with many people, though he had tried to keep tabs of he people most important, sending the necessary birthday gifts (even if they were a few months late or early, depending on your point of view), and the occasional letter. Jiraiya had come to learn in his travels that technology tended not to work so well for him, so other than knowing how to use a basic computer and cellphone, he’s pretty backwards technology wise. Still, he hoped that his friends could forgive him for not keeping in touch better and welcome him back.

He tried to go back to the police force for a few years, and was surprised to see that his rookie partner Minato had suddenly turned chief of police. And though it amused him to no end and he teased him mercilessly for getting a desk job, he turned down any and every promotion sent his way and spent most of his time trying not to dwell on the past. Unfortunately, he was far too jaded to try to make that career work for him. So when he heard of Feel Good Inc. (and of some of the people working there), he decided to offer himself up as a writer. Or more likely, appear in a bombastic display and tell them they should hire him, and thanks for doing so. After all, he was the great Jiraiya, able to turn words into gold. Who wouldn’t want him?

Personality: Jiraiya is a pervert, and usually makes no attempt to hide that fact. His favorite activities often include watching women in places where they are in the least amount of clothing possible, anyone who reads a few pages in his novels will know where his mind usually resides, and he’s had more than one lawsuit where he was told that he needed to keep his wandering hands to himself. Fortunately for his publicist, however, Jiraiya is usually happy to just watch. He is also very showy and loud, often exaggerating his fame or making outrageous claims that impresses no one but himself. Most people hear about his work because he self promotes like no other, and the fact that he’s such a character. He often wears face paint and strikes poses in order to draw attention to himself, and it’s obvious he’s pretty self-centered. If he doesn’t see what he gets in order for helping someone out, or if he simply doesn’t feel like getting involved, he won’t, and no one can make him. He’s pretty unyielding, and doesn’t let anyone order and does what he wants to do when he wants to do it. It often takes dragging him by the ear as he kicks and screams to do anything he doesn’t agree to, and sometimes even that doesn’t work. Ultimately he decides his life, and no one else has a say in it. Jiraiya is also pretty compulsive, and often does things (like drool after women) without realizing he’s doing it, and he’s been slapped for more than one occasion where he wasn’t aware that he was reaching out to touch what he wasn’t supposed to. He’s also compulsive with spending money, and though he’s pretty wealthy, often he has to write a book quickly so he can replenish his account because he just felt like taking a trip to France for a few weeks and needed to spend, spend, spend. But for all of his loud, eccentric behavior, Jiraiya is pretty reclusive. If he doesn’t want to be found, good luck trying to find him. He’s hardly where he says he is, and if given the choice, he’d rather be by himself than with a roomful of people. It’s not that he’s anti-social, it’s just that crowds block his creative process, and some people are so boring. People don’t call him the hermit because it’s cute, but because the only home he has is this mountain retreat that is only reachable by helicopter or a long car drive up a winding road that isn’t paved. He is also pretty secretive despite the fact that he’s so talkative. He usually has an ulterior motive for doing everything he does, and usually no one figures it out until it’s too late. He also doesn’t share his thoughts and feelings very well, especially the latter. He only speaks frankly to people he trusts, and he can count those people on one hand and still have room left over. He doesn’t like to trust people, he’s been burned too many times in the past, and so he keeps a comfortable, warm distance from everyone else.

To those he cares about, however, Jiraiya is immensely loyal. He would do anything to make them happy, and once Jiraiya considers you a friend, he considers you one for life. And it helps that his memory is pretty long. Someone he’s met once and made a good impression on can count on him, and he’ll defend his friends to the death. He’s someone you can count on to be there for you through thick and thin, even if sometimes through the thin you wish he was gone. He’s also fairly good at motivating himself to do whatever he needs to do, and once he sets his mind to doing something, he’ll be sure to achieve it. No matter what the obstacles. He’s very passionate about what he believes in, whether it concerns preaching about peace, love, or justice. And Jiraiya tries to walk the walk as well as he talks the talk, and he believes he does a pretty decent job of it. First and foremost though, he is passionate about life, and his appetite for living it is rather generous. He loves to do the things that most people are too afraid to, and more than one insurance company has said he was too big of a risk because things like sky diving and hiking up to the top of Mount Everest are things he likes to do in his spare time. He tries to inspire other people to not let life pass them by, merely by showing them what they can do. And though most people like to write him off as a rich, idiotic pervert, Jiraiya is incredibly intelligent. His first novels were interested in ethics and morality after all, not exactly light topics. He likes to keep abreast of current events, always checks sources of information, and when he can, he likes to get straight to the source. He’s also fairly observant, and can read people fairly well. And even his worst critics can agree that he is a dynamic, energetic person who doesn’t look his age. Or act it, but still. He is a genuinely caring person for those he trusts, and there are the rare times when he gets serious and can offer just what is needed for the situation. He is pretty wise despite the fact that he seems to be rather lazy and silly, and he only gives advice when asked and hardly ever pushes his opinion on anyone else. And while most of the time he gets in trouble with women for saying too much, sometimes he knows exactly what to say to make something right. And if he fails there, well, there is always taking someone out for food.

Likes: Frogs, reading, writing, spas, traveling, women, peace, spying, tattoos, soap operas, ethics, Tsunade, popsicles, blondes, showing off, teaching, money, learning, plays, and cooking.

Dislikes: Worms, working, politics, business, failing, disloyalty, vegetables, homicide, people saying he should cut his hair, popular teen novels, rudeness, false facts, hatred, publishing companies, old people, getting slapped, people not appreciating his work, being interrupted, and rain.

First Person

Attention all actors and lovely, lovely actresses:

The great Jiraiya has arrived! Please hold your applause and try not to faint!

I know many of you have heard of me, far more than who have not, but for those few poor souls who have yet to understand the implications of such an announcement, let me enlighten you!

I am the man who has traveled the world in search for a definition and reason for the elusive feeling of love, whose literary thoughts on the subject have been translated into six different languages so anyone over eighteen could share in my journey, and this popular series known as Flirting Paradise has spawned three motion pictures, with a television show in the works! I am hailed as a VIP wherever I go, my mere presence has been enough to stop the crying of the grouchiest of babies, and women swoon at the sight of me!

Those of you still conscious at this point must be wondering why such an awesome being like me has deigned to grace you with my presence.

The answer is quite simple!

I too, wish to make the world feel good.

Though, be forewarned, those of you who will be working with me. If you have no talent and no wish to endure hardships in order to create perfection, do not bother to speak to me. It is best if I never see your face. For those of you who are willing to passionately embrace their roles, contort in near painful positions, and follow me without question, I will not lead you astray! In a way, I am like Disney. Once you work for me, you will never need to find work again, and you can always be assured that my productions are top quality, on both paper and film.

Third Person

Jiraiya cracked an eye open blearily, glaring slightly at his blinds which had somehow been knocked askance when he had toppled into bed this morning so that a strip of sunlight fell right across his face. Groaning a bit, he tried to roll over to go back to sleep, but his alarm clock was going off loudly, sounding like some loud, demonic mechanical monster. It felt like each beep was a spike into his brain, and he reached to hit sleep, his large hand knocking over a few things from his nightstand before finally feeling the cool plastic beneath his fingers and pressing the desired button.

Groggily he glanced at the time, sighing. Ten forty in the morning. Too early to be up. Far, far too early. He hefted himself up slowly, pulling his long hair away from his face as he yawned, itching at his bare chest. He hadn’t managed to get back in until four from his ‘research’, though for him that was pretty tame. Why, in Belize he had been lucky to stumble back to his hotel anytime before seven… But this wasn’t Belize and he could no longer sleep the day away and wake up at night. He thought he would have been fine with it, and most days he was, but mornings were a completely different story.

He hefted himself out of bed, stumbling towards his small kitchen to gulp down a few glasses of water, feeling a bit more like a functioning human being after splashing some cold water on his face. Though he had loved the life of a nomadic writer, going wherever he pleased and seeing women of all shapes and sizes and colors, he could admit that there was nothing really in it. There was no point, and now that he was aging, though not slowing down, he felt like he should settle down somewhere for a while. Check up on old friends, visit the graves of the people he’d left behind, and focus maybe on a more serious novel. While Flirting Paradise was fun, it wasn’t what he had set out to do as a writer, even if it paid all his bills. He didn’t even need the job at Feel Good Inc., or any job, and he could retire happily and live a life of luxury. He supposed all those rejections were worth something. Though that wasn’t for him. He liked to be moving, doing something, working towards a goal. And right now it seemed that goal was the repair the tattered relationships he’d left behind.

So, yawning a bit and searching around for the pair of clean clothes his cleaning lady left for him every morning, he steeled himself for another day of work. Repairing friendships, like getting used to a new sleeping schedule, needed work and should be taken one day at a time.
