Testing Thread

The day had been long and hard, and Franklin trudged down the street toward the Baxter Building.  Classes had been difficult to bear that day, but he was relieved that it would all soon be over.  He stopped on the sidewalk leading up to his home, and he looked up at the top.  He smirked and proceeded to turn his trudging into a brisk walk into the building and into the elevator.  There was studying to be done for finals.

Kristoff, coming up from the basement and adjusting one of his gauntlets, nodded to him as he walked in.

"Hello, Franklin. I hope you are reasonably well today." It was courtesy, but not only that. With Dr. and Mrs. Richards no longer in permanent residence in the building, but their children's often finding it convenient for school, Kristoff felt a certain amount of responsibility for making sure they were okay.

"Hi, Kristoff," Franklin replied, "I guess you could say today went well. It's almost over, at least. Haha." He watched the elevator doors close, and he pressed the button to carry them both to the desired floor. "How about you?" he asked the man who was technically his uncle. But... that was a little awkward to call Kristoff 'Uncle Kristoff'.

Kristoff appreciated the avoidance of the term more than Franklin could possibly know.

"Very well, thank you." It did look like it had been a long day for Franklin. "I was just about to make some tea. Would you care to join me? The particular variety is good for headaches and such."

"Thanks. Tea sounds great right about now." He looked at the lights go on and off as they got higher up.

It's an efficient elevator, so they're soon in right place. Soon there can be stepping over to the kitchen, where Kristoff will put his amateur herbalism to work.
"Please refresh my memory, Franklin. What are you studying this semester?"

Oh, his classes. The dread was setting back in on Franklin. "Oh," he said as the elevator door opened and walking ensued, "Just working through my general education classes. Right now that would be... Western Civilizations, Composition, Algebra for some odd reason, and Spanish. They totally screwed me on the math. I placed higher, but it was too late to change things when I found out."

In truth, Franklin had only started going to college classes this year. He was finally finishing up his first semester. If he hadn't waited so long to start, he would definitly be suffering through better classes.

Kristoff listened, then nodded sympathetically. "Ah, yes." Undergraduate Algebra at 20 sounded beyond mind-numbingly dull. "Bureaucracy is, of course, terribly helpful in that regard," he said drily as steeped some lavender tea.

"Western Civilization should at least have been interesting if the instructor was any good." He pours and hands Franklin a cup carefully.

He chuckled at the thought of h is professor for Western Civ. "Heh," he began, "Professor Brown is pretty enthusiastic."

He accepted the cup of tea with nod of his head. "Thanks." He took a sip and held the cup in front of him. "He likes to segwey into some wierd stories."

"You're welcome." He'll have his own.

"History lends itself to that easily. Of course, so do most disciplines." Kristoff was just generally careful to avoid referencing childhood stories when discussing scientific matters with the younger set of the Baxter Building.

"At any rate, I certainly hope your studying goes well."

"Thanks Kristoff," he commented and took another sip of the tea. "Some of the things in history remind me of things I've experienced myself."

"Oh? Anything in particular?" Kristoff hoped it wasn't any shared experiences. Nostalgia wasn't best served by 'Remember when I was in preschool and you were nine and your master/father/whatever's robot tried to send me to hell and you only stopped him 'cause you were crazy?'

Seriously, it was a wonder that any of them had lived to be ten.

"I was thinking about when Rome decimated Carthage, and Hannibal attempted revenge revenge only to fail," he said, "And it reminded me of when I pretty much destroyed Mephisto, and he came back and..."

As he started to talk about the matter, the more it came to him that Kristoff probably wasn't very fond of the memory either. That, and it reminded Franklin of an extremely unpleasant time in his life.

"I guess my point is," he said, "Even though I want to be normal, and not be involved in any superhero-ing business, is it possible for me to avoid it?"

"Avoid it absolutely? I do not think so. Things happen, at times. Avoid it enough not to make it a primary facet of your life? Yes. With the psychic blocks adequately maintained, you have been much less of a target for attention, and of course, there is nothing that says you have to become your parents."

"..."

He took a sip of his tea.

"You're right, Kristoff," he replied, "I guess that leaves me to wondering how easy my next exam is going to be."

He took another sip of tea.

"You are welcome. Should you find yourself needing anything during the course of studying, Cassandra and I should be in the building all evening, barring unforeseen circumstances." He drinks his own, then pauses. "You have not declared a major yet, have you?"

"No major picked yet," he said, "Haven't started considering any, either. I want to get through this first year just by rolling with the gen ed courses. Next year I think I'll give it some thought."

"I can hardly criticize." Kristoff smiles. "I could not exactly make up my mind at your age." Hence the physics and electrical engineering and mathematics.

Kristoff worries a little about Franklin's being directionless, but he knows too well about having dangerous places in one's own brain -- even on a much different scale-- to cast stones.

"Now that the semester is finishing, are you going to be attending the Maria Stark Foundation Dinner?" Kristoff asks as he just about finishes his tea.

He scratched his head and thought about that one for a moment.

"I think I will," he said, "There will be some friends and really good food."

Kristoff nods. "The arrangements are always of excellent quality, yes." And there'll be people he knows, so hopefully Kristoff can avoid much mutual insufferability.

"Well then," Franklin said with another sip of his tea, "I think it's time I get to studying. Thanks for the tea and chat, Kristoff."
