You do not try very hard. You've shown blatant compassion for me and tried to be understanding of who I am and what my wishes were. This is different than simply being neutral, the indifferent action would be to not try and prove to me that being polite was better than being rude.
Compassion is an overwhelmingly strong emotional weakness.
