lavender brown, queen of the columns. ([info]gossipqueen) wrote,

It wasn't exactly unusual for Lavender to fall asleep on the floor of the living room, curled up in a little ball instead of on her bed. Just like it wasn't exactly unusual for Seamus to fall asleep on the couch above her. What wasn't characteristic of Lavender, though, was for her to be sleeping there in the middle of the day. She had gone home for a lunch break, and instead of going back, she had fallen asleep on the floor, peanut butter sandwich uneaten and mango-orange juice untouched in front of her, just above where her head rested on the floor.

It was getting to be about six o'clock, just about the time that Seamus usually got home, and Lavender normally went to an event of some sort, but she was still normally at work.

Instead, she slept, her once tense body clenched up into a little ball, seemingly relaxed as she twitched slightly in her sleep.

"Lavender," Seamus said again, this time reaching out to carefully nudge her. "Hey, wake up, sunshine. Please?" He knelt, watching her face to see if she was waking up.

She inhaled again, this time clenching up again and then stretching out, almost cat-like. "What time is it? Why're you home so early?" Lavender asked groggily, not opening her eyes, ready to fall back into a deep sleep. She was just so tired.

"It's six, sunshine," Seamus said, just as softly as before. He couldn't help but gently push some of her blonde hair off her face with a few light fingertips. "You fell asleep. Everything okay?" It was slightly worrying, for Lavender to be asleep in the middle of the evening.

"What? It's not six," she whispered, voice cracking with sleep. "It's only like twelve-thirty. I have to go back to work at one-thirty." Lavender wanted to reach out for his hand and hold it there, but she knew she couldn't. And she was so tired that she didn't want to move.

His touch lingered there without her even doing anything. "No, love, it's definitely six. You fell asleep, you probably missed work. C'mon sunshine, wake up. Please?" It was all he could do not to put a kiss on her temple, amused as he was by her sleepy voice.

Her eyes slowly opened, and Lavender looked confusedly up at him, and then at the clock on the wall.

She blinked.

And in a flash, she was up, standing and picking up her uneaten lunch. "I missed work! I can't believe I missed work. What am I going to do?" Lavender said in a slight panic as she brought her dishes over to the sink and then made to fix her messy hair.

"Go in tomorrow and tell them you got sick," Seamus suggested calmly, trailing after her. He was lucky enough to have a job that could technically be done from home, it wasn't always a big deal when he missed a day or two. "You'll be fine."

"No it won't! I was supposed to edit a bunch of new editorials today -- goodness, I wouldn't be surprised if they're all gone by now, I would be --" Lavender trailed off, bustling around to find her shoes. Where had they run of to? Not far, surely, since she had just had them at noon. "I was supposed to show the new girls the ropes and how to properly write their gossip columns and oh hell I can't find my shoes!"

Seamus casually, quietly, nudged them from where they stood at the edge of the couch under the dust ruffle that covered the legs. "Lavender," he said again, an exasperated plea in his voice, "It is six in the evening. They're probably all gone anyway. Just stay, there's no point worrying now."

She stopped, let out a heavy breath, and took a huge gulp of her orange mango juice that was sitting beside the empty sink. "I just skipped work," Lavender said in disbelief. Even if Lavender was unreliable in every other sense of her life, she never ever missed work on purpose.

He had to laugh at that, rolling his eyes good naturedly as he walked over and cupped her cheeks playfully in his hands. "Welcome to the adult world, sunshine," Seamus said, releasing her as he walked to the cupboard to get a glass for water.

She wrinkled her nose with an unamused expression and put down her cup on the counter. "You think it's funny. Just wait. When I get fired, it's you I'm gonna be counting on, Seamus." Lavender shook her head. "Have to count on you for everything."

"Oh that I could be so lucky," Seamus said, face in the freezerbox as he rummuaged for ice cubes. They were the nice non-melting kind -- they were wizards after all -- but it was best to keep them where muggles wouldn't wonder if any stopped by. "I'm not an unreliable guy, you know."

Lavender shrugged. "I don't think it would be horrible. But do you know how bored I'd be if I couldn't write? And how on earth would I get my gossip fix, Seamus? I couldn't not do my job." She shook her head, closing her eyes in disbelief.

"Lav, they're not about to fire you over one missed day," Seamus said, straightening, ice water in hand. "They'd be mad to. You're excellent at it and you know it. Please stop worrying?"

She nibbled at her lower lip, worrying at it for a few more moments before sighing. "I'm being silly. And you're right, I'm excellent at it," she said, flipping her hair teasingly, "And I am way too good for them to be firing me anytime soon. I'm sort of a big deal, you know." Lavender put her hands on her hips and puffed out her chest as if she had something to prove.

"Charmed for your presence," Seamus said wryly, reaching out lazily to poke her waist, grinning.

"You would! You so would! And you are, Seamus. I am so mad at you!" She did, however, grin at him. "I could beat you up, Seamus, I don't think you realize how tough I am."

It just makes him laugh all over again at the thought of her tiny frame trying to do any damage to his tough, thickly built Irish stature. "Really?" Seamus echoed, his eyebrows raising again. "That sounds like a threat, Lavender, I don't know if I'm comfortable with that."

Lavender shook her head, raising her fists and clenching them. "Really, Seamus. I don't think you realize this, but I really am a big deal. I'm willing to fight to the death!" She was grinning from ear to ear, waving her fists around as if getting ready for a fight.

She was adorable, Seamus thought before he could stop himself. They were just. friends. But that didn't mean he couldn't think, right? Even if those thoughts were best kept to himself. "Hey, better idea!" he said, reaching for her wrists to pull her fists down. "Let's talk about what's got you skipping work. Sleep last night, love?"

Lavender sighed heavily. "Ugh, I just couldn't sleep. It wasn't about anything, I just. I don't know." A shrug. Work was tough lately, she told herself, when really she'd been having war dreams all over again.

A frown appeared, tugging down at the edges of Seamus' mouth, without his notice. "Alright," he said slowly, letting it go. If Lavender didn't want to talk about it, it was none of his business. "You'll never sleep tonight, you know."

Seamus could think of a few things, prompting his frown to curl into a small smirk of his own. "You'll think of something, won't you, sunshine," he said with confidence.

"Merlin, Lav, you're always trying to make me into a pouf," Seamus laughed, his own hands holding her as well, naturally. "Dancing, buying your nasty orange juice, taking you to Yule Balls..."

"Hey, you asked me to the Yule Ball, just saying, so technically, was so totally you that suggested that poufy thought in the first place," she countered with a wide grin. "Besides, you always drink my orange juice, so."

"I don't know where you get these deluded ideas," Seamus said airily, nose in the air with a grin of his own. "I wouldn't touch your orange juice, and you totally wanted me to ask you to the Yule Ball anyway. I could tell." That's exactly why his voice shook the whole time. Totally.

Lavender laughed gently and let him pull her in. "Hey look at that. I guess we don't even need a club, do we?" she mused, swaying to an imaginary beat.
