Oldie but goodie? :X
Sigh, that's my defense for all of these, but. I AM NEW TO THE BUSINESS OF CDJ? :[

Give me one of my characters and one of yours, and I'll tell you how they end up together and about their first-born-- even if they are unqualified to have children (doesn't die, not canon, etc). I'll even give a PB!

CRACK, AU, AND CANON GLADLY ACCEPTED.

Their romance, if one can call it that, was slow, reluctant. Acknowledging their feelings meant moving on, taking a huge step forward from mourning the deaths of people that they still felt strongly for—and would always feel strongly for. Was it disrespectful to their memory? Were either of them ready to face that commitment again—or would they ever be? Were they even suited to one another, beyond such artificial commonalities? Moreover, did it matter if they were not, or would this be enough to hold them together? It was easier to not pose questions than it was to ask and try to answer them. Instead, they dedicated themselves to the war effort, becoming reckless, uncaring, and even dangerous, in the lengths they would go to to ensure a winning outlook for their side. Their relationship teetered, hovering in the balance neither here nor there as they simply concentrated on one thing: winning, no matter the cost. Slowly, almost without them realizing it, their relationship morphed into one with an addictive nature, providing the sort of emotional stability they couldn't find on their own, even if it felt at times as though it would consume them both whole and tear them up from the inside out.

The war was a tireless, fruitless one. First, the Prewetts. Then Dimitri Thomas, sending Derek into a dark spiral that almost got him killed multiple times. But the darker days were only arriving as they lost Ben Fenwick, the Bones, and for the greater good of the Wizarding World, but the complete and total detriment of the Order, the Potters, alongside Sirius Black and Peter Pettigew, death, after death, after death, after betrayal. People, friends, allies, were continuously struck down until it felt as though there was nobody left to fight on their side. With the Potters, however, came the final blow to He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, and after the long, bloody fight, their comrades had not died in vain.

But cutting the head from the snake did not stop its rattler from striking one last, devastating blow. The torture and incapacitation of the Longbottoms after the fall of the Dark Lord decimated the morale, the sanity, of those left behind, where Derek held Emmeline as she broke down to a point that lay far, far beyond tears, somewhere along the way to madness. It was two weeks later that they apprehended the Lestranges and Bartemius Crouch, fighting to within an inch of their lives to see justice exacted.

If it was one thing they learned, it was that life didn't stop. Cruel and unrelenting though it may have been, lives were still continuing to be lived, time still marched on, heedless of anything but the sound of its own march. The Wizarding World was anxious to put the bloody decade behind them and scurry to cobble together some semblance of normalcy, moving on as though it were the easiest recovery in the world to make. Those who had seen it all knew better. After ensuring their few remaining friends and allies were in good health, if not a good state of mind, and that the brunt of the threat had been erased, they left England altogether, hoping to leave memories of the carnage behind.

In the end, they could not go far from England, wanting to remain close, ever on alert for a new threat. They moved into a small cottage in the reclusive Welsh countryside, forgoing most contact with the Wizarding world, as well as their own magic. Derek, too broken by his efforts in the war for much else, became a Muggle policeman, whilst Emmeline entered the teaching profession as a Muggle primary school teacher. They never marry, but it is of little consequence. Their days are quiet, laborious, and ultimately overshadowed by the remembrance of things (and people) gone by. Although they try, and sometimes succeed, in moving on with their lives, behaving for a moment or two, like they are normal people, they cannot outrun the past for long. Rather than brooding too much on the past, however, they aim to embrace it, making it a part of them, rather than repressing or ignoring it. Their relationship is tenuous, rocky, and unstable, both unhealthy and beneficial, a symbiotic one. Like an unhealthy drug that heals the wounds it itself has made, so has their relationship created an artificial dependency on one another. In spite of this, however, their bond is solid, loyalty unwavering, and though they may not see it, feel it, or understand it, linked by a love strong enough to weather through all the destruction.

PSYCH, they never have children. Although they want to and discuss it, it is an idea they know they cannot pursue. After having seen all that they have, they cannot in good faith bring new life into this world. Behind the scenes, this can never happen because Emmeline dies and Derek would be forced to die himself, then where would that leave little Dittany?

If they did, though, her name would be Dittany Alice Vance-Dobbs, a huge pain in the ass, and smarter than anything in this world. And she'd be PB'd by Reese Witherspoon.

Guess what you'd need ALL this tedious backstory for.
