AU: Affairs of State.
It was time for the annual State Dinner between the royal houses of Latveria and Ruritania. Her Serene Majesty would discuss affairs of state with the Master of Latveria and his son. The King-Consort would catch up with one of his dearest friends. And the princesses would get into trouble. It was Tradition!

As they shook hands in a stately manner in front of everyone, Gretchen muttered, "You. Me. The back-allies of Old Strelsau?"

"Now, your starting of trouble just put a man in the hospital. Asking me to join you would have been more honest than what you've just done, and I might have a shred of personal dignity left right now, Danica.

I do not like games, or being used to stroke your ego. You knew I would react poorly to this and you did it anyway, which proves to me that you don't respect me.

I'll be leaving now." Cameron says, turning to go.

Cameron does stop, long enough to look at both women.

"Danica, please don't. You do things like this to get my attention when you already have it, and then apologize afterward. You cannot simply deal with me honestly, which upsets me.

I think we both need take a break and make some decisions about what we both want from this." Cameron says, not rising to Gretchen's bait. It irritated him that she would condone, let alone aid in this. He'd thought better of her.

"Oh, don't you ignore me. That was not an attempt to get a rise out of you. That was the observation that you're expecting maturity from everyone else but yourself. It was a joke. A lark. We expected you to show up and growl, menace the patrons, and be talked down. Yes, she's playing games. It's a little inappropriate, I'll grant. You've never minded it when she was tormenting her brother, or any number of other things. But a joke at your expense, which forces you to punch a man, is the end of the damned world? Yes, obviously you both have a lot of things to work out, and you both have some growing up to do, but dear God and all the saints, Cameron!"

"No, Gretch. It's okay. He's right." Danica sighed. "I should have thought before I acted. I didn't and now I earn the consequences."

She reached into her pocket and fished out the money she'd brought to party with and took it to the bartender.

"This should cover everyone's beverages and food tonight. Everyone. I will see to it that your establishment is repaired quickly as well."

Returning to Gretchen and Cameron, she was very quiet.

"I suppose you will contact me if you want to talk, Cameron?"

"Gretchen, maturity is asking for something you want and living with the answer either way. Maturity is treating those around you with respect and dignity, rather than playing games with their mind. Would you tolerate this kind of treatment from someone, Gretchen?

I don't think you would. But I'm supposed to because the two of you find it funny? I suppose I see the standard here." Cameron says quietly.

He despised how surface worlders held themselves to one standard, and everyone else to another. He never understood why people just couldn't be /plain-spoken/ with each other.

"Perhaps we'll do so later. You and Gretchen were having an evening. I'll leave you to it." Cameron says.

And this time, he does leave.
