S-sorry! I...

[Easing up then, the not-quite-mirth fading to a more subdued smile over the other's shoulder. And patting his double's back awkwardly again and his chest's still shaking a little from the last rumbles of repressed laughter.

But--not pulling out of the hug, either.]
... Sorry...

[You idiot.

You're the one who needed a hug.]

[Once, when Merlin and Allen had still remembered things and Rhode had just left Allen had asked him why people found hate so easy. Why no one understood and expected everyone to bow before it. Merlin's answer had echoed his thoughts. "I don't know Allen. I don't get it." There they had been Dragon Lord and Exorcist. Two heavy hitters that just wanted the fighting to end.

Fights were the staple of Adstringendum. You either fought or knew someone who could. Powered and non-alike. There was bias, prejudice, and violence at every corner. Yet at moments like that there was mutual cooperation and knowing. Comrades in the beautiful dreams they carried like standards of love raised for the world to see. Being hugged back, reminded Allen of that.

It was the last time anyone had hugged him with that kind of bridge shining like star in their hearts. Rhode hugs weren't the same as that. They paled in comparison, a dull gray that lightened a little with time. But that wasn't important.

No.

This was.]

[Giving comfort to someone who knew how it was and needed that hand held into the darkness to help them through it.

He holds on tighter when the choked sounds start. It was alright. He would be here until it was over.

[But the sound that he hears isn't the pain that shapes life becoming a thing he can feel or hear. Instead a rare music he hasn't heard from himself in months...over a year makes the air feel so light. His eyes widen, like a child starting in awe within the center of a grand cathedral. The altars were just being lit and the wash of warmth and light cutting through the shadows and banishing the shades.

Calling the dead to rest, calling the meek to seek shelter, and singing to soldiers to take a moment of repose.

Allen's eyelids slid shut and all he could see behind them was gold light like the sun burning away in the sky.]

[And the warmth was all around him, shocking him out of his moment of rest.

Why?

His brows raised as he looked at his double in confusion, opening his mouth to ask then shutting it. He didn't need comfort! The walking was all he ever needed even when his soul was pouring its essence into the busy street and no one noticed.

Smile and keep moving.

Words he lived by. Like any monk's mantra or chant to seek a trance or focus - the words flowed through his blood and his mind. They poured into his soul, calling him to pull away but...

His eyes stung at the corners and his smile brittle now, stretched thin and threatened to break. Something built just below hearing like a storm clouds rolling in. You could practically hear the audible growl of thunder and the rippling flash of light as lightning sparked but was reigned in.

The proverbial sky split-]

[And laughter came out. Soft at first and quickly gathering momentum and volume as Allen became hollow, filled only with the mirth.

Because it was better than the frustrated broken howl threatening to surge up from the depths. He didn't do breakdowns. It was better to cover the threat of it with blankets, carpeting, and thick wooden doors. Falling to pieces wasted time and that was something he never had enough of to bother with looking back. Not that he ever thought to peer backward in any time since Cross took him in and threw him into fights with a sink or swim mentally.

You kicked what was there in the teeth and made sure it never rose again. Not sit and have a cry about it.

Maybe that's why he didn't notice he was shaking or pressing his face into the other Walker's shoulder.

He couldn't let go even if he tried.]
