OpenSUSE Part II: Warcraft and MP3s [07 Jun 2007|08:36am]
Alright, I went further into my OpenSUSE world last night, probably spent way to much time but I figured out and accomplished a lot. I used the Crossover software. It installed without any hitches which was quite nice. It's very easy to use also. I had been using it for a little on my MacPro at work so I didn't have much trouble using it in Linux.

Installing World of Warcraft was easy, I just popped in the CD and clicked on the Installer.exe. Went through the setup as if I was in Windows, worked perfectly fine. The next part didn't happen as I wanted it to though. Inserting the Burning Crusade DVD didn't work so well. I couldn't find any installer executable so I couldn't do much of anything. After poking around on the Crossover website and Google I figured out that I could just copy the installer files to my hard disk and I found the Installer.exe on the CD version of the expansion pack (no idea why it's not on the DVD version). Putting all the installer files and the Installer.exe in the same folder yielded good results. After installing World of Warcraft and The Burning Crusade it was time top patch up!

I snagged the patches from my usual place but when I tried to run the 2.0.0 to 2.0.3 patch it told me that some files were in use and it couldn't patch. I did some more Googling and looking on Crossover's web site but nothing useful came up except making sure the executables for the game weren't running and to reboot. I did both and both failed. So then I moved the patch files into the Warcraft directory ~/.cxoffice/xp/drive_c/Program Files/World of Warcraft/ and then I used the Crossover Install Software tool and it worked...absolutely no idea how that all works. I did that method for both patches and it seemed to work perfectly fine!

I've been playing World of Warcraft in Linux now and it seems to all work pretty much perfectly fine! At one point I lost some key mappings, my map wouldn't open and I couldn't type in chat. Removing the WTF and the folder inside the Cache folder seemed to fix the issue. There is a decent config.wtf posted on the Crossover website that I am using. The only major issue I have is that I have about 3 resolution options for Warcraft. I am sure that should be able to be fixed. My addons and everything else seem to be working just fine though. I also cannot run XGL when I am running Warcraft because of the 3D accelerator issues. I don't have a issue with that, it just would have been cool if it worked together.

My next issue came when I couldn't connect to my MacMini's iTunes to play my music. I am not sure why it's not showing up in the Banshee player but it's not. Banshee has a plug-in that will let it show up in my MacMini's iTunes, seems silly I can't see my MacMini in Banshee though, oh well. So after doing some extensive reading, searching and comprehending it seems that due to some licensing issues they don't include MP3 playback support in OpenSUSE. Lame...

After adding like 5 sources and installing an extra 30 packages I finally got MP3s to play. Banshee-Helix kept crashing though. XMMS, Banshee or Totem didn't want to play music that I had added in through the SSH mounted volume. I have a feeling it was something to do with permissions. I ended up copying like 5-6GBs of music onto my local hard drive and now they work fine in XMMS. XMMS also has a Last.fm plug-in so it'll scrobble my stuff as it plays which is excellent. For some reason the actual official Last.fm client screws up XMMS, weird huh.

I can obviously explain this in more detail if anyone needs it.
