Upgrading Playstation 3 Hard Drive [07 Aug 2007|08:06pm]
Today I found an article on Digg that explained how to upgrade the hard drive in the Sony Playstation 3. The whole process is very very easy. The article recommends that you have a screwdriver, the new hard drive (SATA 2.5in) and an external hard drive. In the comments of the article someone mentioned that an iPod or a flash key/memory card will also do the trick if you do not have an external hard drive. Of course you'd need a flash key/memory card that is at least 2GBs in size because some of those videos and demos from the Playstation Network Store are quite large.

Now in their instructions they said to go to the Saved Data Utility under Games and from there you can backup your data. I couldn't figure out how to do it from there whatsoever. Maybe I am blind or something but I could not figure it out. Instead I went to the System Settings and into the Backup Utility. I backed up my data to an external hard drive. Then I followed their take apart instructions and had my new 120GB hard drive installed in a few minutes. Booted the PS3 backup, formatted the new hard drive and then used the Backup Utility to restore my data. I would say it's a 5-10 minute process. The longest part is restoring the data so if you're like me and have 5-6 demos and 4-5 HD trailers, it'll add another 10 minutes to the process.

It's very easy and I am so glad Sony allows you to do this...I just wish I could do the same on my xBox360, the skimpy 20GB HDD sucks.
