May I take you out this evening? My Department at the Ministry is having a dreadfully boring little cocktail party to celebrate the latest Prophet article and I feel that having you on my arm is the only thing in the world that might make it worth going. Perhaps after I could take you to dinner? I've so been looking forward to our date, I don't know that I could see you without making good on my promise.
