Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Terry was amazed how he somehow managed to keep up in school. Between school, his double-life as Batman, working as Bruce's assistant, his responsibilities at home, and Dana, everything else just seemed to fall by the wayside.

Including spending time with his best friend. He only really saw Maxine in school, and ever since Marissa came along- he'd DEFINITELY been stricter with letting him call her while he was on patrol. As both Terry and Bruce had decided that for the time being, it was best that Marissa didn't know about Max being in on their 'little secret'. Then again...Terry hadn't told Maxine that he had a sidekick, either.

Mostly because he wanted to avoid the fit of laughter that would come along with him telling her.

Today, though, he'd made a note to make some time for Maxine after school, pawning Matt off at a friend's house, and telling Bruce that unless it was an EMERGENCY (as in mass breakout from Arkham emergency), he wasn't to be bothered until he showed up for patrol later that evening. Luckily, as stingy as the old man could be, there were certain things that he understood.

The doorman at Maxine's apartment building buzzed him right up, and Terry knocked on her door, a hot bag of food from her favorite Chinese restaurant in hand.

Maxine open the door to the apartment that she shared with her sister, her mother technically lived there to though she was never around.

“Long time no see, Terry,” Maxine said with a smirk, before she spied the Chinese food, “and I see you remember the proper tribute to get inside.”

Maxine then gestured that Terry could come in. “So you have got to tell me what you have been up to lately.”

"I did. I came prepared," he said with a smirk of his own, closing the door behind him.

"The usual. School. Mr. Wayne's been running me through the ringer, as always." Until he was sure that they were totally alone, he wouldn't say anything about his activities as Batman. He had no intention of accidentally letting it slip to Maxine's mom and sister that he was the new Dark Knight. Nor did he want Maxine to be in trouble for knowing his alter-ego.

“Yes, the usual,” Maxine said as she saw Terry casing her apartment. “Don’t worry my mom and sister aren’t here and I don’t expect either to be back for hours. And I already check the place for listening bugs.”

Maxine knew and understood why Terry was so very careful about his identity but that didn’t stop her from twitching him on if from time to time, after all what are friends for. “You can put the food in the kitchen where you can tell me all the details,” Maxine said as she made her way towards the kitchen herself.

"I swear, it's like you can read my mind sometimes." Terry followed her into the kitchen, placing the food on the counter.

"Okay- I'm going to tell you something...and you have to PROMISE not to laugh this time." Even though Terry knew that was a bust. He went on for days to Maxine about he never wanted a sidekick.

He also made her swear not to laugh when the Justice League crashed in on the drug bust that he was breaking up...and she did. Though, he maybe shouldn't have told her about getting his tonsils attacked by that jackass of a Green Lantern.

“I promise to do everything in my power not to laugh at whatever you are about to tell me,” Maxine said taking a seat at already. If whatever he was about to tell her required a promise about not laughing it had to be hilarious like that Green Lantern thing.

She had warned him about thinking he was prepared for everything but then again she didn’t always pay attention to the advice he gives her which was the only reason she didn’t bring that up. “So what is it you wanted to tell me?”

Terry sighed. Yeah, she was going to laugh. He could tell. If she was sitting down and already fighting it back, oh yeah, it was coming.

He looked down at the counter. "I have a sidekick." He nearly mumbled it.

Maxine tried her best to contain the laughter she really did but she was laughing so hard she almost fell out of her chair and stopped breathing for a moment.

After she regained enough composure to speak again Maxine asked in between bits of laughter, “How did that happen?”

Terry glowered at her. "It's not funny."

"Bruce has a kid. He never knew about her, but he had kid. Her mom died, was murdered, actually. He wanted her to get trained, so he saddled her with me as a new Robin. Really, I think that he just didn't want to deal with her. I feel bad for the kid."

“Oh,” Maxine said feeling embarrassed about her outburst of laughter. She knew what it was like not to have parents there for you. Maxine hadn’t even heard from her father since the divorce when she was four and her mother was never home and when she was she never paid her or her sister any attention. Her sister had done the best she could to raise her but she never could be a parent.

“Well you had better train her right ok,” Maxine said.

"You bet I will," he said, "I know how she's feeling. She's feeling like that there was something that could have been done to prevent it. Like that it's all her fault. I felt the same way when my Dad was murdered."

“I know it’s not the same as what you guys when through but I think I can understand the feeling. I felt like it had been my fault or I had could have done something when my dad left,” she said, “My sister helped a lot, she did the best she could to explain how it wasn’t my fault and there was nothing I could have done.”

"If you'd like, I'll talk to Bruce about you maybe meeting her. She could probably use a girlfriend. I don't think him and I are really what she needs right now. Bruce barely acknowledges her, and while I'm now on better terms with her than I was when we first started, she's still a little shaky around me. Maybe she needs someone that can just...act as a friend for her." He smirked. "Besides, she's bound to find out that you're in on our 'little secret' sooner or later."

“Well before I volunteer to be friends with her I would like to meet her first,” Maxine says, “But you are right it does sound like she could use some girl time. No offense to Mr. Wayne but I thing he knows about as much about how to raise a daughter as you do about theoretical calculus.”

Terry snickered at that. "Bruce has had experience raising kids- but no girls. Thanks for that though, Max. It'll probably help with her, in the long run."

“Just make sure you let her know about your plan first,” Maxine says, “because surprising her with it will probably lead to bad things. I’m all for helping someone in her position make the best of things.”

Terry gave her a mock salute. "Will do." He gave Maxine a wide smirk. "I could tell her you're our Alfred. That might make things better for her."

“Well as long as she doesn’t expect me to act as her servant I’m fine with that,” Maxine said with a big grin.
