i've been studying dance since the age of four and while i love that black swan has put the spotlight on ballet, it irks me to see the movie being hyped so much. and also, people playing ballerinas more so now? i'm like sit down.

one of the major points about black swan was that it didn't alienate the audience by playing out the finer details of the dance industry, also. you're not going to learn your shit from there.

especially since black swan kind of romanticises the notion of being chewed up and spit out by the dance industry when in fact there's nothing romantic about it and being a professional dancer is extremely difficult and time consuming so basically if you were to rp a ballerina you'd rp them on the subway going home from practice or rehearsals

i'm not sure it romanticises it? she goes crazy and bad shit happens. winona ryder steps out in front of a car. everybody is pretty miserable.

i think either way its a double edged sword. you either are a happy slave to it or go completely crazy. as a former dancer, i definitely had my ups and downs but it was a balancing act. it was a movie, of course. it's not real life, but it was so fucking dramatic and stupid the way they portrayed the ballerinas. i mean i guess lily was alright besides being a drug-crazy, sex-obsessed dancer.

it was a psychological thriller, not a dance documentary. they made this very clear in all the promos. it's a heightened depiction of how a person can get fucked by their own perfectionism, and ballet is an industry where perfection is the thing.

idk man. i think the characters coming out as a result are dumb as shit but i think that's because people don't understand that it wasn't intended to be a documentary.
