"Well I haven't had the pleasure of confirming that and I can't take your word for it..." Although he's sure that it's true. He can see why they're staring, not that he likes that they are.
He's not sure how much farther it is so he keeps looking out and noticing any people around, possible anmbush sites and ways of escape, what the rooftops are like and all sorts of similar things.
