AU - Flashback: Age 5
Vincent's tiny limbs moved rapidly as he bolted through the forest, robes tearing on branches and occasionally tripping over a root or rock. He righted himself as fast as he could. He threw what meager charms and potions he'd stolen behind him whenever he could to deter his pursuers.

He knew who his father was.

Everyone knew.

Mother was going to send him away.

He was scared. More scared than he had ever been in his brief life.

Hildy could defeat anyone short of Lords Thor or Odin, but the house of Volstagg was too far away. He had only one place to turn.

The voices behind him drew closer as he came into the opening near the den. He took to the hill and threw himself into the entrance to Lady Rahne and Lord Hrimhari's den, framed by the tree's roots. "Lady Rahne! My Lord!" He squealed out a cry for help, out of breath, and already tattered and bruised from his flight.

Vincent finally catches his breath enough for another outburst.

"My... my mother... she's going to send me away. My father's an evil... man... On Midgard. Please don't let them take me."

He looks at the half-wolves present with pleading eyes, face already stained with tears.

The prince of the forest holds up a clawed furry hand in a 'not now' way.

"The circumstance matters not," he says, eyes focused on the adult intruders. "I will not be instructed by trespassers."

"Och, it matters not if thy father's evil, Vincent, " Moira whispers to him, extremely quietly, but earnestly. "Granny had to scare Mummy's father off with a shotgun once."

"There need be no violence if ye leave now," Hrimhari repeats.

The leader hesitates briefly, then nods, signaling to his men to fall back.

"The words spoken of your generosity are clearly true, Lord Hrimhari. I cannot think of any house in Asgard that would have that... thing beneath their roof. It will be a simple matter for him to be sent to Midgard."

They sheathe their weapons and leave.

"Remember those scents," Hrimhari calmly tells the other adult wolves present, to calm acknowledgments. He doesn't even need to say what should be done with those of that group who return without explicit leave. One does not lightly patronize Hrimhari Hróðvitnisson in his own autonomous principality.

"Are you all right, my stars?" He asks the girls as he crouches, then. "Are you injured, Vincent?"

Vincent holds back tears, wiping his eyes as he nods. "Naught but flesh wounds... my Lord. I.. I thank you." He bows his head low.

He lifts his head, sniffling still as Danielle fusses over his cuts and bruises. "I do not wish to be sent away to Midgard.."

"Thou'lt have far more time to consider it if there is any uncertainty." Hrimhari says. "To the den. Danielle, thou canst see to his wounds there. We must speak to thy Mummy."

And the girls will come along.

"Mummy! Mummy! Vincent's Mummy wants to send him to Midgard."
"Oh? Well, there isn' anything wrong with Midgard," Rahne says as she puts the puppies down for bed.

"Of course not, Lady Rahne." Vincent gives a customary bow, feeling the familiar warmth and scent of the den wash over him reassuringly.

He wrings his hands together nervously. "I know who my father is now... he is a man on Midgard, named Victor von Doom. Those of Asgard say he is an evil man. I do not wish to be sent away to him."

Rahne bristles. "Doom? Och, he's isn' fit at all to raise a child. The stories are he's not much of a father to the son he already has. 'Tis never happening."

"Then it ne'er shall, star of my heart."

"Da told them to go away," Moira said. "Like Granny had to do for you."

And the Prince and his lady look at each other for a few long moments.

The particulars of that exchanged look escape Vincent, currently wiping his face with a sleeve as Danielle sees to him.

"The brute was right... no-one in Asgard will have me."

Danielle has the salve Hogun showed her how to use. She has re-commenced fussing.

Hrimhari and Rahne are still staring at each other when she speaks. "The Forest is an autonomous principality, Vincent."
"Aye," the Prince confirms. "Thou shalt stay here. They shall not casually breach our territory again."
"Aye," Rahne says.

Vincent's head snaps up, almost getting salve in one eye.

"...what.... why wouldst thou do that for me?"

"Hold Still!" Danielle insists.

"There are several reasons, young enchanter. Some thou'lt not understand until thou'rt older."

"And one, of course, is that we're all quite fond of you, Vincent," Rahne says warmly.

"But let us be clear: Thou must listen to what thou'rt told. And not wander or attempt sorcery without asking first. 'Tis best thou stayest with Moira and Danielle at all times. It will be some time until thou canst leave the forest."

The girls look pleased.

Vincent goes still, both in surprise and at Danielle's bidding, but blushes up to his ears and resumes wringing a sleeve between his hands at Lady Rahne's words.

"Yes... yes of course, my Lord and my Lady..." Vincent feebly agrees, scarcely able to process their generosity.

He looks pleased as well though.

There's a warm silence for a bit, punctuated only by Danielle's commentary as she finishes treating the wounds.

In this time, Moira looks back and forth from her playmate to her parents, face clearly in scrutinizing thought.

"Mummy?" She asks, loudly. "How long was it before you called Granny 'Mummy' instead of 'M'Lady'?"

Rahne smiles. "Oh, a very long time, dear. It's not the sort of change one makes all at once."

Moira nods, then.
