AU - Flashback: Age 5
Vincent's tiny limbs moved rapidly as he bolted through the forest, robes tearing on branches and occasionally tripping over a root or rock. He righted himself as fast as he could. He threw what meager charms and potions he'd stolen behind him whenever he could to deter his pursuers.

He knew who his father was.

Everyone knew.

Mother was going to send him away.

He was scared. More scared than he had ever been in his brief life.

Hildy could defeat anyone short of Lords Thor or Odin, but the house of Volstagg was too far away. He had only one place to turn.

The voices behind him drew closer as he came into the opening near the den. He took to the hill and threw himself into the entrance to Lady Rahne and Lord Hrimhari's den, framed by the tree's roots. "Lady Rahne! My Lord!" He squealed out a cry for help, out of breath, and already tattered and bruised from his flight.

It's clean, warm, shiny and cozy, and there are computers here and there. The puppies settle in on a rug and a couch

"We'll handle it, dear," Rahne says. She meets her mother's eyes. "In a nutshell, Mummy, Vincent's been a playmates of the girls for more than a year. A few months ago, there were, well. Essentially, there were people with pitchforks, and Hrimhari ordered them off our property." She smiles. "And he didn' even need a shotgun."

"It was very brave... even if it was in the Forest... and especially since he didn't have to...."

Vincent adds his bits to the telling, edging closer to Rahne once more. There's gratitude in the motion though, rather than the skittishness he's been displaying.

"No-one else would have taken me in."

And yet, where those months ago, those same words would have been forced out sullenly, now they're said with shining eyes as Vincent looks up at his benefactors.

"Only thing to do at a time like that," Granny says with a nod to her son-in-law.

Rahne keeps an arm around Vincent. Hrimhari just nods pleasantly and then slips away to change.
"I wouldn' normally suppose ye had those sort of problems in Asgard," Granny said bemusedly. "It always seemed the benefit in balance to having to put up with all those trolls and giants and goodness-knows-what. 'Tis not mutation issue is it? They never seem to have problems about that."

Vincent takes a deep breath, then lets it out with a slight huff before Lady Rahne can have to explain it.

"My father doth be known to Midgard as Dr Doom. Mother had decided to send me to live with him, once it was known. I ran."

He bites his lip, having gotten the admission out quickly.

Granny frowns sympathetically. "Och, well, very smart of you to run, lad. There's no question that was completely unacceptable."

Vincent smiles quietly. "Thank you." He considers something, then speaks again. "You must have raised Lady Rahne very well."

"Why thank you, lad. I did my best. So, first time on Midgard? If anything confuses you, just ask me or Rahne or the girls."

Vincent nods. "I was born in Asgard, but... I... I am of mixed blood. I have never been to Midgard before."

He looks amongst the gathered adults. "Is it safe to see more of Midgard while we are here?"

"Not too many places you bairns should be going. But tomorrow you can go down to the Chalk and Cheese. Jack and Annie can always be trusted to look after things."

"What is the Chalk and Cheese?" Vincent asked. He was almost certain that couldn't be some sort of food combination itself.

The assorted holiday decorations also caught his eye. "So... what doth Christmas entail? We--" He falters. "Asgard does not have such a festival."

"It's a pub. Like a mead hall. I gave it freehold to Jack and Annie a long, long time ago. Pubs aren't normally right for wee children, but you'll be perfectlty safe at the Chalk and Cheese," Granny explains.

"Christmas is mostly like Yule!" Moira assures him. "But with Granny, so it's better!"

Vincent, finding that logic to be most sound, nods and joins the rest of the pups on the floor, taking in the details of the home again.

And, as is usually typical whenever Vincent goes to all fours with the others, Douglas is upon him, and the friendly tussle breaks out amongst them all.
