Field Test
Scott brought the mini-Blackbird to a landing in a field just outside of the small town, having come in under stealth mode so that the locals wouldn't be disturbed.  Cerebro had detected an anomaly, albeit one that it couldn't quite seem to pin down.  Fortunately, it had pinged relatively low on the danger scale, so he saw little problem in bringing Pixie along for her field test.

"All right," he said, as he put the Blackbird into landing mode.  "Entering a potentially hostile and unknown situation.  What's your first move?"

"Get a visual on the area so that I'm aware of my surroundings and where the potential hiding places--for them and for me--are. Gotta have a basic idea of where you're at."

She chewed on her lower lip. This had been so unexpected. Cyclops was taking her on a mission! And he was so cute. Oh gosh, she had to do this right....

"Good," Cyclops said. Perhaps people actually were paying attention to his lectures.

He popped the Blackbird's hatch. "Aerial recon. Report back in five minutes."

YES! Correct answer! She all but happy-danced as she nodded and hopped out of the Blackbird, taking off to check the area. Even excited, she was fully capable of noticing detail and her dark eyes looked over everything with care. The problem was...she really wasn't seeing anything. She took a second loop before returning to the Blackbird.

"All clear. Too clear."

Such enthusiasm. Scott sincerely hoped the life wouldn't beat it out of her.

"Not a good sign," he admitted. "But we'll proceed with caution. I don't think this is anything you can't handle, but if I tell you to run, you run. Understand?"

"I'm faster on wing than on foot, sir!" But yes, she understood. She really hoped that things wouldn't come to him telling her to flee. That seemed wrong somehow.

"Since nothing's showing up visually we should look again at our intel!" That was the next in the checklist. She'd memorized it, albeit while half-daydreaming.

Scott hoped it wouldn't come to that either.

He nodded. "Good."

"Small-scale spike on Cerebro," Cyclops began. "Low Alpha or High Beta-level mutant, but local mineral deposits make a clear reading difficult. No known history of mutant manifestations in the town, which means its probably an outside source."

He started walking towards town. "Signature was too brief to see if it corresponded to any known mutants."

Pixie kept pace with Scott.

"Was there anything else of interest on the spike?" As she trotted along she wondered what they'd encounter. "It seems a little like we're unfortunately having to do this blind." She wracked her brain to remember protocol for when they had to go into something blind but the truth was, there wasn't protocol.

"We should go in two different directions but not go more than a block apart."

"We are, unfortunately," Scott admitted. "Which could well mean it's someone with a Cerebro jammer. They hit the market of less than scrupulous mutants a few years ago."

He nodded. "Good," he said, as they reached town. He checked the mini-Cerebro he was carrying, and pointed. "Looks like that way. Possibly that bar there. Let's follow your idea and come at it from different directions."

"I'll take from the west if you go from the north." She paused. "Mr. Cyclops...if our target is in the bar...is it legal for me to even go in?"

"Not technically," Scott replied. "But as Wolverine would say, sometimes, rules were made to be broken."

He paused. "...Please don't tell him I said that."

She stifled the giggle.

"I won't, but if I get arrested you have to explain this to my mum." She grinned and then sobered up. "Meet you at the pub then." If she were nervous as she turned to take the west route, she didn't show it in her face but her wings might have trembled, just a bit.

Cyclops took the other route, carefully scanning as he moved.

As it happened, Pixie's route would be a bit shorter and get here there first. There were sounds of noisy yelling coming from within.

What to do when encountering a situation that included a noisy bar wasn't really in the class materials and at this point all of Pixie's textbook knowledge was used up. So she took a deep breath and walked inside, uncertain of what she'd find.

Inside, Pixie would fine a very, perhaps impossibly, fat man, chugging down a beer, his eyes fixed on the scene of the small bar TV. The other patrons had either fled in terror or were cowering beneath tables before the mutant known as the Blob.

He threw the empty bottle at the TV, narrowly missing and shattering glass everywhere.

"Kill the Ump!" he growled. "What kinda call was that!"

Pixie hadn't ever been into a bar before so that her first experience was with shattering glass and a large...blob growling at the television it was likely the girl would think twice about drinking. Ever.

"Sir I think they're called referees, but regardless of the name I don't think killing them is a very good idea. Who's winning?"

Pixie didn't cower. This guy had World Cup on and she was rooting for Brazil.

The Blob frowned, then looked back at the screen. "Brazil," he said.

He took in her wings. "Whatcha doing here, kid, anyway?"

"Oooh, I wanted to watch this match." She briefly glanced at the screen to check the score and then turned her full attention back to the Blob.

"Checkin' in on things and now, watching the match. Why are you scaring all these patrons?"

He shrugged. "'cause I can," he said. "Wanted a beer and then they all started screamin'."

Bad side of being a wanted mutant criminal, apparently.

Scott had made it around by this point, but stayed out of Duke's sight for the moment. Pixie seemed to have it in hand.

"Well, that's not a very good reason to be a foorball hooligan. It's not even the proper venue. I'm disappointed."

She noticed that a few of the patrons were scared of her, too.

"I think my wings are freaking them out some. You got anything like that, wings I mean?" She eyed his back. "It's either that or they think you're a bully. Clearly they dont' understand football, but that's beside the point. Being mean just cause you can isn't good enough. Now, if they were cheering for Spain..."

She got a little closer, for a better view of the tv. The guy scared her, too, but she didn't show it. She was too busy trying to engage him in conversation, hoping people would figure out that she was opening a door by distracting him to let them leave.

The Blob laughed. "You got guts, kid, I'll give you that. Last time some teenager stood up to me, it was one of them X-Geeks."

He thought for a moment. "...You ain't onna them, are ya?"

The others, meanwhile, began slipping out while he was distracted.

"Me? I'm a student. I'm not old enough to be an X-Man. And I think I'm too short, anyway."

It wasn't an untruth...

This, however, cemented his attention on her, while the last of the others got out.

"Oh, really," he said. "Bet it would make 'em real sad if anything happened to ya then..."

A ruby red optic blast sailed above his head, blasting a piece of ceiling down on it.

"Give it up, Dukes," Cyclops growled.

The distraction technique aparently worked. Cyclops got the jump on Blob, so to speak, and Pixie stepped back.

"Nah. Just mad, probably. Like that. Oh, hey, goal for Brazil!"

The bar was clear of patrons. This was good because Pixie was fairly certain there was going to be some semblance of a fight. She readied her pixie dust.

"And who's gonna make me, One-Eye?" Dukes growled as he got to his feet. "You? Ain't happened yet."

He stood his ground against one of Scott's optic beams, but Scott continued the barrage, keeping his shots in Duke's face.

"Hey! I can't see!"

"Now!" Scott barked.

Pixie didn't need the instruction. The second she saw his blast go to Duke's face, she unleashed her dust right at the angry mutant criminal.

She'd teleport him to jail, too, if he was too belligerent.

"Hey, what the heck are you doin'..."

Anything else the Blob might have said was reduced to nonsensical jibbering under the effects of Pixie's dust. He fell backwards, hitting the ground with a thunderous smack.

Despite himself, Scott found a smile twitching at his lips. "Nice work," he said.

Scott bent down next to Dukes and picked up something attached to his belt. "Scrambler device," he said. "Probably shorted out for a moment, which is when we picked him up."

He nodded. "I'll put in call to Val Cooper, and she'll send someone out. The nice thing about Dukes is that once he's out, he's generally out for a long time."

He nodded toward the door. "Let's head back to the Blackbird."

Her eyes widened a moment but she went along towards the door. An actual foe. This was a real mission. It slowly sunk into her as she walked towards the Blackbird.

"Wow."

I hope you survive the experience.
