Steve Barton
The plans for Steve almost immediately derailed from the moment he set foot into the game. He was certainly intended to be more evocative of early Hawkeye, an adventurous rogue with a heavy interest in women and a bit of a problem with authority. Romance with Anya and various plots that kept putting him in a leadership position conspired to destroy this, but I think it continued to work out for the best.
Steve’s also a good example of something of a false status quo or the illusion of change. He would grow in little spurts, but he would also remain someone who ultimately questioned just what the hell he was doing, both as an Avenger and as Anya’s boyfriend. These self doubts would continue to inform a lot of his direction, despite his loyalty to both the team and his girlfriend.
Being shot put himself into a better position to consider what he wanted out of life and his place in things and while he resolved to continue heroing, he retains his doubts. If a simple gun shot could nearly take him down…
Steve’s been temporarily put out of the picture, but will return a somewhat changed individual. Still recognizably himself, of course, but having seen a bit more of the harsher side of life, which will color the choices he’s going to make from here on out. …Assuming my own writing skills are up to the task and it isn’t just a giant reset button.
