i think the first book is very similar to battle royale but as the story fleshes out in the other two books it differentiates itself. it's kind of like comparing two zombie movies, same similar premise but they CAN go off in 2 different directions

+1 i love battle royale and i was pretty fucking irritated when i read the first book because i didn't want a shitty american version of another japanese film/book, but once i got into catching fire and mockingjay i was really pleased with it
