Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Annie still couldn't believe that Stephanie was dead. She'd been gone for a few months, and Annie still expected her to walk through the door like she did every night after she got done on a patrol.

And Annie still wasn't any closer to figuring out who her killer was. That, and she was starting to run low on money. Steph had left her enough to get by, but she wasn't exactly loaded or anything. And past finding out who killed Stephanie, Annie had no idea what she was going to do with the rest of her life. She'd been living with Steph for the past two years, and she was gone. She was still a minor, so if the police or anyone found her, she could land with her butt in foster care, as she had no living relatives to speak of...at least none worth mentioning, at least.

Spoiler got done her patrol that evening, and made her way back to the apartment where she had been living with Steph. She had no idea where she was going to go once the landlords booted her out, as she was barely able to keep up with rent. The part-time job that she'd been holding down barely covered enough for her buy supplies she needed, let alone cover rent. And the money Stephanie had left her was running tight as it was.

Annie pulled off her mask as she crawled in through the window, lowering her hood. She was so tired from working and going straight to patrol, she didn't even notice that the window was already open when she arrived. She didn't even realize that someone might be in the apartment with her.

There is someone in the apartment and Red Robin doesn't move, watching the newcomer enter the room. He'd gotten Stephanie's daughter to a safe place, but he wondered if Stephanie had come back with everyone else. He found out very quickly that she hadn't and his heart sank all over again.

If she came back, would she have called him or told him anything? Did he even deserve to be told, after how he'd treated her?

When he saw the Spoiler costume, an anger formed in the pit of his stomach, but he watched quietly. It wasn't enough that she'd been murdered, but someone had stolen her old gear now? How could Bruce let this happen?

The disk flies out of the shadows and slams into a wall inches from Annie's face.

"Next time, I don't miss." Red Robin growls.

"Take off the costume and get out." he says, stepping from the shadows.

Annie let out a scream, before glaring in the direction of the voice.

"You're the one that's trespassing, dude," she said, crossing her arms over her chest. "I live here. And the costume is mine. As is everything else here."

"You live here?" Red Robin asks, his expression neutral.

"That's funny. I know the person who lives here and you might have the right hair color, but you're not her." he rasps.

"If you're looking for her, than you can just haul your ass out the door," Annie said. "She's dead. She's dead, and she's not coming back."

She will not cry. Not in front of this douchebag.

"I know. She was my friend." Red Robin says softly.

"How did you know her? Did she give you that costume?" he asks.

"She..she was like a sister to me," Annie said, not being able to help herself, her tough front breaking a little. "She took me in when I had no where to go, and without even really knowing me. She didn't exactly give me the costume...but when she died...I felt like I just couldn't just let all that she did just...stop."

"She was that kind of person. She gave to her friends." he says.

"What's your name?" he asks.

"Stephanie did train you. I guess she covered snark, too." Red Robin says.

"Call me Red Robin, for now."

"She had a baby, once," Spoiler said, saying the first thing that came to mind. "She was young, only sixteen, and it was with a guy that never even knew she was pregnant. She had a girl, and because she knew that she was too young to take care of her, she gave her up to someone that would."

The girl's words bring Red Robin up short. Stephanie didn't tell that story to just anyone. He'd been there for her through her pregnancy and remembered how painful the decision was.

"That was hard for her to do. She struggled with it every day. I know that. She was my friend, a long time ago." Red Robin says.

"If she trusted you enough to tell you that, then I'll trust her judgment." he says.
