BETMAENSSSSSS!!!
YEAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH time for coherent Batman: TDK review.
I got on my red Joker shirt and headed out with Sierra and her friend. We stopped to get some batteries for her camera for pics and when we got there, it was about 9-something. Sierra brought a Robin shirt she bought and put it on. The theatre was packed, but luckily we got there early enough so we were at the beginning of the line. As Talia saved our seats, Sierra and I went out and took some pics.
I got a pic of her making a naughty :o face as she groped a giant statue of the Hulk's butt, as well as a pic of me next to the Hulk. Looking fat. I then got a pic of her running from a dinosaur in a big poster. Going outside, we took shots by the TDK and, for Curry-tan, Iron Man posters. Plus a couple of shots in the theatre and it was all good.
I kept exclaiming Sierra will leave the theatre shipping Batman/Joker and we had some fun moments. I wish I could remember a couple, but the one I do:
Me: So... Christian Bale and Heath Ledger--
Sierra: --Sexy.
Me: Fucking.
We ended up sitting in the theatre for a good two hours. 9u6 But we got good seats, even though we had a couple douchebags behind us. The theatre seemed to be full of emos and preps. WHERE MY NERDS AT???
But yes, there, now for my thoughts on the actual movie.
WARNING FOR SPOILERS, BUT I TRY NOT TO MENTION TOO MANY.
Okay, uh, lemme fangirl about Joker here. Absolutely wonderful Joker. I was... so impressed. I'mma gonna copypasta some shit I said in a comment to
ada down below.
Comic book fans may or may not be disappointed, but as a Joker fan in all media forms, I liked Ledger's preformance. There is psycho!Joker and sociopath!Joker and the former is in the comics while the latter is in the movie. Nolan was trying to attempt a more realistic point of view, and I think he pulled that off well. As much as I like the zany idea of the Joker becoming what he is from falling into a vat of chemicals, there's something unsettling about not knowing the basic nature of the Joker.
I think they kept the rest of his attitude spot on besides his tendency to go bonkers. I mean, yes, HL!Joker was bonkers and zany, but not like, over the goddamn top. He was still a pathological liar. He was still identified as a man who kills because he just likes doing it; there's no real understanding behind why he does what he does. He assured us that he is very smart and he has nothing to lose, which makes him hard to intimidate information out of. He's cold, he's ruthless and best of all? He lets us know he wants Batman around for the lulz.
I remember seeing an archived thread on /co/ regarding intense hatred for the Batman Confidential's choice of Joker origins. There are similiarties between it and the movie, i.e. Joker got bored of doing mob robberies and became thrilled and happy again when Batman came into his life, as well as even down to the "non-mouth scars" bit, which is spoiler-esque.
However, his mouth scars in BC were caused by Batman, lol. I'm not sure if this had any influence on the movie, as I read BC was fairly new (I read it three months ago), but if it was, fans who hated it might be connecting it by default. What I do know is The Long Halloween is one of the main inspirations for the film, mostly because it involves Two-Face's origins and the mob problems which serve as a sub-theme in the movie.
Regardless, his scenes were priceless. Oh so many gems. ;w; I will list my top three in non-spoilery formats:
1.) Joker's magic pencil trick.
2.) Nurse Joker.
3.) Joker's ending monologue. (See: cut text.)
That's all I'm going to say. These two parts were hilarious. I pretty much laughed and came whenever he came on screen. YOU COMPLETE ME, CLAPPING FOR GORDON, etc! I could go on and on and on about how much I really enjoyed this Joker renedition, but really, I can just sum it up into a really huge I FUCKING LOVE IT. Even then it doesn't feel like it's enough.
But yeah, tl;dr, I think HL pulled off a very good Joker. A more menacing, less "WAHOO WAHOO WAHOOO CRA-RAZY!" Joker, but nonetheless a great one.
Also, yeah, seeing this movie made me remember how sad it is Ledger is gone. I hope if there's a Heaven, he's up there having a ball. Thanks for the movie, Heath. I adored it.
The rest of the movie was good, too. I loved the special effects, especially the car chasing scene in the tunnel and down the street. I think Bale is a good Batman, but his deep voice in Bat-mode was a bit silly/over the top. It was hard to take him seriously sometimes. But then again, it's always hard to take a man parading around in a bat costume saving people too seriously. ;) WHY SO SER yeah.
Killing off Rachel (Rachael?) was a nice angsty touch. I didn't care for her. I just... meh. Sadly enough, I liked Katie Holmes as Rachel much better. And that's sad. :/ But hey, made a good tragic plot twists and I like those. (Maggie JILL-EN-HALL is not sexy to me either kthx.)
I really felt bad Harvey/Two-Face died in the end, but it was fitting. He couldn't live on after killing those people; it would destroy him and eventually destroy all those who believed in him. It was terribly sad that Batman had to take the fall for the victims, though, but eh, that's how it goes... Harvey was a good man. Goodnight, sweet prince. ;_;
I wonder if they're going to do a third installation? It was open enough for one, maybe. I don't know, but I'd love to see another one. Though yet, not really, since the movie is trying to make our characters realistic and all other villains, besides Catwoman, have unrealistic origins. Unless they decide to use Poison Ivy, in which she poisons and kills using plants, but isn't like, a plant herself. Same could be said for Mr. Freeze, Penguin, etc., but I honestly think they've got some farfetched origins. And doing a third film just makes me think of the old triology... Not to mention, do we need a third Catwoman movie? She was in Batman Returns, the godawful Catwoman... Hmm, I just want moar Joker. ; 3;
THANK YOU MOVIE FOR NOT KILLING OFF JOKER. YOU CAN'T HAVE BATMAN WITHOUT JOKER. IT'S IMPOSSIBLE.
I give this movie, in the end, four stars. :3 Comic book fans are always bound to whine, but if you go in there with an unbias point of view and just think, "Hey, I'm seeing some of my fave charries on the big screen duking it out!" you'll probably enjoy yourself.
Oh and uiwerywer I just realized that Gary Oldman played Gordon. Yes, indeed, why so sirius?
