So Shino's not one to come forward with a lot of personal information. If you have any questions about the cannon of his life, feel free to ask them here and I will do my best to come up with coherent explanations. What his daddy issues are, why he's got creepy scars on his arms, how he manages to be asocial and also quite the pimp; all questions have answers which will likely vary wildly in length.

Would ask about his thoughts on Tenten, but I'm not even sure if they've met yet.

1. Fondest memory to date.

2. Greatest fears and/or insecurities?

3. What is one of Shino's most well-kept secrets?

4. How does Shino view himself? On all aspects. Give the good, the bad, the ugly, the underneath the underneath, whatever.

5. And in contrast, how does Shino view his family? On all aspects. Same deal. Give the good, the bad, the ugly, the underneath the underneath, whatever.

6. What are his passions? His guilty pleasures?

7. The wildest thing Shino has ever done. Does he regret it? Why or why not?

...I'll stop now. ^^;

You can ask after they meet. He'll love her more if she has a kitten on her.

1. His fondest memory is actually closely associated with one of his more painful memories. Shino was 8 years old when his parents separated for the second time. It was much more difficult at age 8 to see them pulling apart for the second time than grappling with it the first time as a smaller child. Having more of an understanding of the situation, Shino started to internalize his parents' actions, worrying that he hadn't adapted himself well enough to the situation to keep his mother around. The weekend after his mother moved back out his father took him to the park closest to their home. The two Aburame just sat together in the park, watching people and the sky and butterflies and the light on trees, for the better part of 12 hours. It was the longest stretch of time Shino had ever spent with either of his parents one-on-one. They didn't talk about anything particularly memorable and spent most of the day just leaning against each other on the bench, but it's one of the most vivid and happy memories Shino has. This is most likely because it's the moment in his life when he first felt the overwhelming understanding that he was loved. And that was a fantastic piece of knowledge.

2. Shino's greatest point of insecurity is allowing himself to be vulnerable. Feelings were never discussed and only very rarely expressed at home, which established very early on in his life the idea that a strong and well-put-together person doesn't have emotions. This was to some extent reinforced by his parents' perpetual lack of interest in one another. However many years of this sort of household later, it has become strongly ingrained in Shino's mind that emotions ought not to be experienced, and that if they somehow manage to exist they are to be suppressed and surely not expressed. As he certainly has not mastered the art of feeling nothing, he lives in a perpetual state of fear that someone will notice. The idea of other people knowing what he's thinking and feeling remains very scary. He doesn't share and tends to greet expressive people with a stoic silence. Too much touchy-feely-ness tends to throw up all his guards. Shino doesn't care what facts people know about him--he just hates thinking that anyone might know what he's feeling. The glasses help.

4. Shino has a fairly healthy self-image. He considers himself to be intelligent and very mentally capable; in fact, if asked point blank he'd likely reply that he's not sure there's anything he couldn't do or learn without the proper time and effort applied. Not that he's not man enough to admit when he's wrong--knowing what he doesn't know means he can ask about it and get answers. He isn't overly concerned about himself or his future, as he's fairly certain that, should his life plans change, he'll still excel at whatever he's ultimately meant to do. On a less important level, Shino understands that he's not the most socially adept person. As with everything, he's sure he could be if he tried, but it's never been horribly important to him. He doesn't have a lot of concern about the fact that people have wildly different reactions to him moment to moment based on how well his mental filter is holding up at the moment. When he needs to, in a professional setting, he's confident that he can play the part of a winsome young man very well, but generally speaking it's not worth the trouble to bite back things that need to be said. As long as they aren't questioning his intelligence, he doesn't much care what other people think of him, after all. He gave up on that idea long ago when he realized that saving spiders from being squished by his fellow toddlers was unpopular. He knows what's important to himself, and he knows that supporting that sense of self is more important than surrounding himself with casual friends. On the topic of actual friends, he's somewhat more insecure. Shino likes to tell himself that he doesn't need other people in his life, although the truth of that statement is very debatable. Like many his age, he isn't completely confident in his own appearance; neither of his parents were stunningly attractive and he certainly doesn't see himself breaking from the established trend of mediocrity. Given, however, that Shino has had an amazingly easy time hormonally, this point of weakness has never felt devastating. The harder struggle has been attempting to differentiate himself from his parents' expectations. For the most part he's fairly certain that he's made them proud with his moderate success as a student, but the longer he spends away from his father the less certain he's become. He still feels, like many only children, that the point of his hard work and triumph is to please his parents. Whether he has an actualized sense of it or not, he acknowledges that a positive conversation with his father sends his confidence through the roof, and that quiet words of parental disappointment can keep him locked up in his room for weeks trying to figure out how to be better. Particularly since leaving home he's been struggling with this concept, as things that his parents wouldn't necessarily approve of are starting to feel potentially very fun. In so many words, Shino's general sense of himself is that he is a competent human being.

5. As somewhat explicated above, Shino feels a lot of obligation to his family. He's not particularly close to his mother, but he holds her at a basic level of esteem which has continued to influence his treatment of women from his toddler years onward. He feels a little bit of disappointment about the fact that she continually left him and his father, which he's fairly certain is why he tends to hold girls in his life at a farther distance from himself. His father he absolutely adores. All of Shino's really truly positive memories from childhood revolve around his relationship with his dad. Although he's not completely sure he wants to be 'just like daddy' when he grows up, he tends to use his father as a measure of success. Shino doesn't have a strong sense of family, but his loose affiliation with each of his parents as individuals is immensely important to his sense of self and where he's meant to be taking his life. As much as he's beginning to second-guess his parents, he certainly doesn't know how to function without them.

6. Shino is passionately interested in insects. They've always made sense to him in a way people never have. Their behavioral patterns, their social structures; they simply click with his mind much more easily than the way people 'normally' interact with one another. He's fairly certain that there's still a lot people can learn from studying insects, documenting relatively recent discoveries and poking around dark quiet places to look for new species. It's the only thing he's ever really wanted to do with his life. Although you wouldn't necessarily be able to tell to look at him or his typical interpersonal reactions, he's also the sort of person who becomes very passionately invested in friendships. He doesn't bond easily with people his own age, but when he does he tends to become fiercely devoted and possessive. In terms of guilty pleasures, Shino has always been a fan of chocolat chip cookies. They are possibly the only thing he actively seeks out despite knowing they're bad for him.

7. By his own assessment, Shino would probably say that the wildest thing he's ever done was kiss a girl. It was just the one time, right before leaving for college. One of the young ladies from his secondary school caught him in a park near their school and hammered it through his thick skull that she'd had something of a crush on him during their time together. Feeling confusedly impulsive with one of the biggest changes in his life looming overhead, Shino spent a few minutes with her off the beaten path furtively attempting to enjoy a moment of intimacy with her. He did not particularly enjoy it, which very briefly concerned him in regard to his sexual orientation. In the long run, he doesn't particularly regret it--it was an opportunity to learn about himself and the first step in properly understanding for himself his own lack of hormonal drive for physical contact.

And, finally, the skipped one.

3. Shino is, in fact, the goddamn Batman. really isn't a very secretive person. He's not horribly public about himself or his private affairs, but there are very few things which he wouldn't be completely comfortable explaining to people, particularly people he has any sort of respect for or whom he trusts. He's not particularly enthusiastic about discussing his relationships with his parents or the 'weird Aburame stuff' that his father's family subjected him to, but none of it is legitimately secret.

Thank you for being patient with my excessive questioning. ♥

One or two more question(s):

1. Why does he have not-so-creepy scars on his arms?

2. How does he manage to be asocial and yet also quite the pimp with the ladies?

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]strongsilentype

Duh. They're good questions. ♥

1. In the long long ago, when things were possibly over-exaggerated, the Aburame family were known to have cultivated a rare breed of largely harmless parasitic insects. Although, unlike other 'cultivated' insects, the breed posed very little practical use, the Aburame maintained a large community in their family compound for the sole purpose of their use in the family's coming of age ceremony. At age 12, the boys of the family were introduced to the community of parasites and expected to remain among them for an hour while the insects infected their skin. The process left very little permanent damage other than prickly scars across the upper arms and torso where the insects entered and exited the boys' bodies. The process itself, however, was excruciatingly painful and thus a properly difficult rite of passage. As modernization hit Japan properly, the insects became immensely difficult to continue cultivating. Since then, Aburame men have continued to be marked at the age of 12 by symbolic scarification. A speckled pattern is burned into the young men's arms with a fairly painful chemical abrasion. Both of Shino's elbows are circled with little burn flecks, just like his father's arms. Because of this, he tends to wear exclusively long sleeved shirts.

2. ...woman, I don't know. The ladies just love him because he's hot. He's hot because he's fly. Etc etc. It's most likely because Shino tends to conduct himself like a gentleman. As much as he tends to have a low tolerance for stupidity, he's typically more lenient with his treatment of women, most likely because of the slightly distant relationship he had with his mother growing up. Whereas he felt somewhat comfortable expressing himself to his father, the tumult of having his mother as an on-again-off-again parent kept her at arm's length. His default mode with his mother is that of the dutifully respectful son; his default mode with most other women is a charmingly quiet respect. He's a little more crass with men. Or maybe it's just that he's a heinously attractive young man who seems to be largely unaware of his own adorable nature and good looks. Or maybe he's just secretly a pimp at heart waiting to break out of his anti-social shell. Seriously, I actually have very little idea.

When he gets angry, frustrated, etc, or just feels like being alone, what is the one place Shino would go to get away from it all? Why? What is the significance of this special place?

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

Shino tends not to get angry without a huge extended period of being pushed. He also tends to deal with frustration by disconnecting from whatever's bothering him at the moment with a solid wall of non-emotions. His default mode is to want to be alone--thus far, the only presence which has ever been a real net neutral or net positive is his father (although there are a few people he's meeting this year who have the potential to be equally nice). There aren't really times when he ever needs to get much more away from the world than he already typically is.

That said, his favourite place to be alone is his bedroom. Shino has never had a place where he's felt grounded in his life. As much time as he spent in Sapporo growing up, the family dynamic wasn't particularly stable and the money flow wasn't always as steady as one might hope, so there was quite a bit of moving and shaking in his childhood. For a while his favourite place to go when the world got big and scary was the crook of his father's arm, but as he grew up and differentiated he came to simply love being alone in his bedroom. There are a few things which have always been in his room since he could properly remember--the blanket his grandmother made, a little model fighter plane he got as a present from an older cousin, a (very manly) alarm clock with little ladybugs painted on the hands, and a very small framed photo of his parents looking very happy together. Wherever he's gone in his life, Shino has done his best to arrange his room the same way and set these particular things out in the same general proximity to one another. It's the place he recharges himself when the world gets him flustered. No matter where he is physically in his life, he knows he can go back to the current room he calls his own and see the same things he's always seen.

...This will play on your/Shino's love of entomology:

For each character in the comm, name a species of bug that they are most like. ie. Which species of insect would the character be comparative to in Shino's mind. In disposition, characteristics, tendencies, behavior, etc.

I'm not even sure if bugs have dispositions and what not. It was just a question that came to mind while I was reading your last answer.

Some of these I'm proud of and some of them are meh.

- Haruno Sakura - Pyrrharctia isabella - While they're still in their larval state, they're sweet little caterpillars which seem to have an inherent ability to self-medicate (seriously, look it up; they're insects that take medicine for parasites). Although they grow up into moths, they're most widely known in their larval stage; Shino thinks of Sakura in that sort of light, as though she's not yet broken out of her shell.

- Houzuki Suigetsu - Nepa cinerea - These are decently sized bugs with an interesting structure and what look like giant mandibles of doom. It's at least in part that Shino doesn't particularly know what to make of water scorpions, but he has a weird sort of respect for them; he also has a quiet level of comfort with the idea that Suigetsu is also in the biology department.

- Hyuuga Hinata - Oryctolagus cuniculus Harmonia axyridis - These are cute little guys who like to huddle up in winter and bask in the warmth of the sunshine during the spring. They're very small but very beautiful; Shino thinks that suits Hinata very well, as he doesn't get the impression she's really aware of how lovely she is.

- Karin - Abedus indentatus - They are giant freakin' water bugs. It's really sort of a personal thing--Shino has never been sure what to make of water bugs, and he most definitely does not know what to make of Karin. It seems impossible that someone who works in the same library as he does can have nails like that.

- Nara Shikamaru - Megarhyssa macrurus - They're solitary creatures, as well as the sort of insects which can sit still on a log and simply vanish to the human eye. They are also by nature antagonistic to bees; from what Shino's seen of it, this makes sense for Shikamaru's weird relationship with Ino (see below).

- Tenten - Nephila clavata - These are orb weavers, a difficult form of web to catch prey with. They tend to be delicate and rather pretty, and fairly adaptive to extreme circumstances; Shino is fairly certain Tenten could figure out how to make a web in outer space if she had to.

- Uzumaki Naruto - Amblytelinae amblytelus - They're ground beetles, so they're typically considered to be beneficial to humans but can have a devastating effect on communities of invertebrates. These particular guys are pretty flashy for little ground beetles; Shino thinks the loud colours correspond with Naruto's personality well.

- Yamanaka Ino - Apis mellifera - They're highly social creatures, very flashy (particularly the queens), and often bred to be reliant on human contact. They also defy the odds of aetodynamics by beating their wings 13,800 beats/minute; Shino's fairly certain that's Ino's oral WPM.

Nope. He didn't actually socialize much with other children until he started school at age 12, at which point most kids were done with the 'glue eating' phase.
