Flashback: October 1707
At least 1,450 sailors were lost in the horrible shipwreck. Well, at least 1,448, because two listed among the dead were Bob Gadleng and Daniel Shelly. And the two men clutching bits of flotsam and coughing their lungs out had signed up under those names.

Finally, after much moaning and hacking and heavy breathing, a strangled, raw voice says "So...I see you've got the hang of it, too, mate?"

Shelly coughed and sputtered, but it was most to excise whatever water was left in his lungs. His death by drowning had resulted in him being reborn without the need to breathe, though it was obvious he could still do so.

Damnation. Even that didn't kill him.

He fixed the other man with a stare. "You must be kidding me."

"Don't worry. Shan't tell anyone; I never liked getting grabbed for a witch, either. But I saw you. Most people don't start talking after they're the way you were."

The pain as his lungs strove for air, the creeping blackness, and for just a moment, the white-skinned woman, and then back to the land of the living. And he wasn't the only one in that hell?

"That... would be appreciated," he said finally. He rubbed his neck. It didn't hurt anymore, but he never forgot the pain either.

"Well, as the water's fecking cold, we'd best work on getting ourselves to shore," Hob rasps.

Was it? It took Shelly a moment to realize he hadn't been feeling it.

"A fine idea," he agreed. He tested his legs and found he could paddle well enough.

"Not too far, by my eye."

"Whether it is or not, we'll manage somehow." Hob's legs are so stiff, so cold...but he manages to thrash enough to drive himself forward by sheer desperation.

Shelley will say this for his fellow castaway, he's certainly seems to have a far greater will to live than Shelley himself.

It was father than he expected, but there was shore soon enough. He spared a glance for the other man, as he slowly got to his feet.

"I truly believed this time would do it," he growled, mostly to himself.

Hob straggled behind him, but he managed eventually, dragging himself onto the sand.

He caught a little of his companion's muttering. He can't stand, but he lies on his back and grins. "She's a fickle bitch, ain't she?"

Normally, he might ignore the personification, but...

"You've seen her too, haven't you?"

"Only actually seen her once. It was 1389, and now you're the only other human who knows that. But many's the time I've felt her, waiting, ready to come to me if I wanted her. That's what I've been told. She'll come for me when I ask." Another grin twists the face already twisted in pain. "But no, thank you, Ma'am."

Shelley's eyes narrowed. "Bloody hell," he growls, casting his eyes skyward.

"I can't get her to come forme, and you're telling her to go away."

"Then don't buy into that game! Sure, it hurts, but you just keep going! When you've got nothing left, keep going until you find something else! Speaking of finding, how's some clean water sound?" Hob starts to crawl up the beach.

He stared at him for a moment. "You... you're a damn fool."

He looked inland. "...All right."

Compassion overrode irritation. "Here. Let me help you."

"Thanks." He'll reach up a hand and allow Shelly to help him to his unsteady feet.

Shelly got him to his feet, no problem.

"Looks to me like you're doing this living thing the hard way."

"You're really not like me," Shelly said, somewhat sympathetically. Even if the man was in a prison of his own making, no one deserved that.

"I die rather like a man should... but it does not last. And each time I come back, I'm... different."

Rather die like a man should. Good fellow, but what a sucker.

"Yes, we clearly haven't the same deal. How different are you? And never fear scaring me. Doesn't happen."

"Different every time," Shelly said. "Back there, in the water, after I died and rose... I did not need to breathe and I did not feel the cold."

Shelly shook his head.

"Not exactly the words I would use... But I can't say that was a pleasant way to go either."
