Tarek, son of Kaltak, was born in Tibet to Kaltak and T'Pern, Vulcan monks on a cultural exchange mission and studying Terran monastery culture and tradition. His early years were spent studying the philosophy of both cultures, as well as helping on the small vegetable farm and learning Kung Fu from the monks. He would eventually return to Vulcan with his parents after he began to demonstrate an especial gift for the Vulcan psionic arts of Khat-Kutha, or the process of mind-shielding. He spent his teenage years in the monasteries of Vulcan, expanding on his psionic gifts and becoming the youngest master of Taroon-Ifla known on modern Vulcan, owing in part due to his early studies in Shao-Lin kung fu, and adapting it into the new style.
Eventually, he left the monastery for a time to pursue other studies, focusing on tactical sciences, archaeology and theology. He had an invitation to attend the Vulcan science academy, but felt he would have more chance to explore the galaxy and study ancient religions and different cultures' monastic traditions by joining Starfleet. His early studies were accepted in lieu of much of the Academy's security training, and he quickly went on to his first cadet cruise.
Vulcan intelligence officer Saavik passed on information to him regarding the Anubis' mission to seek out an entirely unknown culture and empire, feeling he would be a good candidate for the posting and studies, and certain the ship would need additional security. In addition, Saavik had another agent aboard she indicated might need subtle watching at times, but gave no reason for this.
As such, Ensign Tarek did the unusual, actually requesting a posting aboard the USS Anubis as part of its security detail. |
