Catching up
There were few times in his life that Simon Williams worried about being stood up, but tonight was one of them. He waited outside the steakhouse in uptown New York, trying to ignore the paparazzi that had been following shadowing him the last hour and a half. Sure, the girl was nice enough and not one of his usual stalkers, but damn it if it she didn't attract her share of trouble, too.

The last thing Simon needed was more trouble, especially these days.

He's been out of the superhero game since Osborn invited him to leave the previous incarnation of the Avengers when he set up his own team. Rather than sit idle or join up with the underground resistance, Simon chose to focus on his career, also know as the part of his life that made him a household name. Wonder Man was just one of many heroes out there, but people /loved/ Simon Williams.

When asked his feelings on the Superhuman Registration Act, he'd been candid; he said that everyone had gone about it wrong on both sides and the public trust got caught in the crossfire. He didn't win any friends in The Community with that one and a few people, like Clint Barton, basically told him to lose their number.

At least /she/ picked up the phone when he called.

So he waited in his blue shirt and black slacks, hoping that Carol was going to show up. Otherwise, tonight seemed like a good night to fly and not stop.

"I took Shamelessness 101 in College. Aced it." he grins.

Her tone catches his attention. Carol's one of the toughest women Simon knows, but she also doesn't like it known when she's got something on her mind.

"Hey, are you okay?" he asks, reaching out to cover her hand with his. His eyes are clear and blue at the moment, a product of his effort to come across more 'human'.

"I'm fine," she said, giving him a smile. "I just..I have a lot on mine, I guess. Just with everything's that happened. The Registration Act, all that crap with Osbourne, Steve. It's been hectic."

"Yeah, I can imagine." Simon says. Those were some dark days, and it was hard to believe all of it was so recent, rather than years ago.

"I saw some bottle-blond bimbo was trying to pass herself off as you. I knew she wasn't, but that's also when I figured out that Osborn had drunk too much of the crazy juice." Simon tells her.

"The Registration Act nearly ripped us all to pieces. We're among the greatest heroes in the world and none of us saw that it was a set-up from the get-go." he says.

The waitress comes over to take their drink orders and Simon opts for a Coke. Not that he needs one, but he would rather not have Carol eat or drink alone.

"Oh, you mean Moonstone?" Carol asked, arching an eyebrow. "Yeah, I saw that. I got to kick her ass. I won't lie, I enjoyed myself greatly. Serves her right for trying to pass herself off as Ms Marvel."

Kicking Moonstone's ass all over New York City had to be one of the highlights of Carol's superhero career.

"Even heroes have their moments of weakness sometimes, Simon." She said. "None of us are perfect, now matter how much we claim to be."

And Carol would order a Diet Coke.

"What about you, Simon. How's Hollywood treating you?"

"If someone tried to impersonate me, I'd enjoy kicking their ass up between their ears, too." Simon chuckles.

"Hollywood is good. I've got a few projects in the works, and I'm never bored. It's not punching bad guys on a regular basis, but it's good." he says, sitting back in his chair and moving his hand from atop Carol's.

"The important thing is that just about everyone is back on the side they need to be on and the world can go back to its regularly scheduled programming." he says.

"I bet," she said. "I don't know how you do it. I don't think I could deal with it...especially the paparazzi."

"It's hard not having privacy sometimes, but it's not much different from being Wonder Man. Most times, though, people know where to draw the line, even if the cameras don't." Simon says.

"Are you okay with being public?" he asks.

"You get used to it," Carol said. "I was a little uneasy, at first. I wasn't sure if I was doing the right thing. If I really wanted to put my identity out there. If I'd still be able to have something resembling a private life. But you know what? I still do. People recognize me, sure, but I'm still able to be myself in addition to being Ms Marvel."

"How many marriage proposals do you get a day? I'm sure every guy out there wants to marry Ms. Marvel, especially since they can just walk up to you and ask, now." Simon teases.

"I saw a web-site dedicated to you the other day. Some of your fans are more hardcore than mine." he tells her.

Carol laughed. "I've had a couple," she said. "Though not on a daily basis. Jen gets all the marriage proposals. Something to do with being green, I think."

"Maybe if your costume showed a little more leg, you'd get all the hardcore fans too." Carol said, smirking.

"Green definitely works, on her." Simon says.

"Excuse me, Carol, but I am as pure as the driven snow, and I have morals to uphold. I don't do nudity." he says with mock disdain.

"The ladies are just going to have to imagine certain things." he says.

"I'll take it under advisement." he says, winking at her.

The waitress returned with their drinks and took their food orders.

After dinner, Simon looks over to Carol.

"I'm really glad you came. Wasn't sure when, or if, I'd see you again. Headed back to Hollywood the day after tomorrow to finishing up filming for Justice Runs Deep and then I have a little break before Taken 2 starts filming." he says.
