To Mikhal
A week after Greer had slept with Mikhal and he was standing before God, taking vows that he couldn't possibly mean. As he spoke them, as he was ordained, he was begging for absolution from his transgression. But succumbing to temptation was not a reason to throw his life completely off course. God was forgiving and the hundreds of Hail Marys and hours of penetant contemplation was surely enough to show that he was sorry. Unfortunately, during those hours of contemplation, he also found himself thinking about Mikhal and the night they'd spent together. It was torture, but Greer hadn't chosen this path because he thought it was going to be easy.

When he saw the position opening in Coldwater, he stared at it for a long time. Was this another seed of temptation? Openings in that sleepy little town were nearly impossible to fill and even harder to keep filled. Something about that place chased the chastened away. But the parishners there needed a priest just as much as they did anywhere else, and Greer knew that he was more qualified for the job than any of his graduating class. Being of the magical persuasion, he had the unique ability to help Coldwater with its--stranger--issues of faith.

That's how he ended up in the little church at the end of the road, nestled on the outskirts of town. It was lovely, really, mountains practically riding up against the backdoor. It was a small congregation, but one that seemed to welcome him instantly. News of his arrival spread like it would in any smaller town with so few options for worship. He had to wonder if Mikhal knew he was there. When he went walking at night, he found himself slipping closer and closer to the neighborhood that was the most likely to house a mansion like Mikhal had described that belonged to Bernadette.

Mikhal had definitely heard. More than that, though, he'd felt Greer's presence. He wasn't sure what to think of the fact that Greer had taken his vows. It was probably silly to think that one sexual apperance was going to shake the man's faith so much that he would give up what he'd been working for. Most of all, Greer was surprised about just how much it hurt that he probably wasn't going to get to be with the sorcerer again.

Sometimes he and Shiloh went for walks, and tonight was one of them. It didn't take long for him to sense Greer, and he honed in on the other easily. When he saw the sorcerer, he was surprised by how much he'd missed him. He never missed anyone.

He recognized the familiar glow around Mikhal's form before he was even close enough to see his face. Most auras were unique, but none struck Greer so much as the vampire's. His heart sunk when he saw someone next to him and his first instinct was to turn and head the other direction. He was ashamed for not calling the man, or trying to get in contact with him again. He was foolish for being instantly jealous of the individual walking beside him. Mikhal had to eat, and he had other things he probably needed as well. Greer frowned at that thought and before he could actually turn to veer off course, he'd approached both of them too close for it to be nonchalant.

"Hello," he said as casually as he could as he lifted his gaze to find Mikhal's eyes as unfathomable as ever. "I knew I'd be running into you. I--I guess I live here now. How've you been?" His focus slid to Shiloh and then back to Mikhal.

Mikhal had his hands tucked away into the pockets of his black peacoat. He had on a red scarf, and it made his skin seem more white. He wasn't sure what to say to Greer, and by the time the man had approached, he still hadn't a clue.

"I heard," he said quietly, managing a smile. "You've been avoiding me."

Hearing that made Greer flush and he stared down at his feet, wholly ashamed of the truth. "I did end up in your town though...didn't I." He was not going to ignore that, no matter how much he wanted to pretend he'd taken this job for the parishners of Coldwater. Really, it'd been for Mikhal. "So I'm not doing a very good job of avoiding you."

"I'm going to head back," Shiloh said quietly, sensing that this should probably be a private conversation.

Mikhal glanced over at Shiloh and nodded a little before he returned his attention to Greer with a frown. He actually felt hurt, and he wasn't use to that feeling. He wet his lips and let his gaze sweep over Greer's face before he stepped a little closer.

"You got what you wanted. And now you've taken your vows and can pretend it never happened. I guess I should have suspected it would be like that, but I didn't."

Greer felt the urge to step back, but he held his ground, taking a deep breath so that his chest rose and fell visibly as he tried to calm himself. He wanted Mikhal closer, as close as he could get. Squeezing his eyes shut against that thought, Greer shook his head. "I'm not pretending it didn't happen. I just think--" he didn't want to say the word 'mistake,' but that's what he was calling it in his mind. "You make it sound like I was using you. I wasn't. It just happened. I'm sorry."

For some reason, he hadn't expected Mikhal to act wounded. The man seemed impervious to such things and that assumption had helped Greer through some of his guilt. Mikhal was worldly. He probably hadn't even really cared about Greer. But standing there now, he thought perhaps he'd been wrong and that made his heart beat frantically in his chest.

Mikhal kept his hands tucked away inside of the pockets of his coat and he watched Greer quietly. He wasn't sure what to say. He wasn't sure that there was anything to say at all.

"It didn't just happen, you asked me to do it," he finally replied as he stepped a little closer. He could hear Greer's heart, could even taste the man's blood on his tongue. "You said you needed to feel me. Why are you here? Why come here of all places if what you think happened was a mistake? You shouldn't be here."

"It's the place that needed me. No one lasts very long in Coldwater. I'm sure the congregation needs someone who's able to stay and not run screaming when they start to discover things are strange here." He made it sound like it was purely the location and nothing to do with the fact that Mikhal was there.

And there he was, lying again. It made him sick and he clenched his teeth, staring down at his feet. "I did want it. I wanted you. Want you. But that doesn't make it the right thing for me." He wanted to just tilt his head, expose his neck, beg Mikhal to make a connection with him again, but he didn't have the courage.

"Fine, enjoy your time here," Mikhal said flatly as he turned to head back towards the mansion. "I probably won't stay, that'll make it much easier for you," he added as he glanced over his shoulder. He could go some place else. He'd miss the mansion, and Bernie, as well as Shiloh but he didn't want to be in the same town as Greer.

He was floored, unable to even speak right away and he watched Mikhal's back get smaller and smaller until finally, Greer broke into a run to chase after him. "What do you want me to say?" he said breathlessly, the spurt of running winding him. "Don't leave. Don't leave Coldwater because of me." The thought of being in the town without Mikhal there was strikingly unbearable to Greer and he didn't want to even think about the possibility of such a thing.

Mikhal turned around to face Greer once the sorcerer had caught up to him. "You obviously think what happened between us was a mistake. And I'm just a vampire, so what does it matter. Maybe if I was human you'd feel
differently, maybe it's easier that I'm a creature most people despise. I'm not staying here if you're here. I can feel you so strongly it's driving me insane."

Looking flabbergasted, Greer shook his head. "It has nothing to do with the vampire thing. It's the--" he searched for the words. "It's the man thing." He winced at how lewd that sounded. "Um--you know what I mean, not that thing, but the male--you're a man. Even if you were a woman--" his voice trailed off, recognizing he'd made a mess out of trying to explain himself.

He reached forward and grabbed Mikhal's arm, feeling the muscle beneath the skin and remembering vividly when he held onto it brushed his fingers over it while Mikhal was on top of him. He exhaled and curled his fingers harder against the man's arm. "Driving you insane because you hate me now?"

Mikhal crossed his arms over his chest as Greer struggled with what he was trying to say. He was aggitated, mostly because this wasn't what was suppose to happen. He'd gotten what he'd wanted from Greer, and that was suppose to be it, but apparently he wanted more and it was confusing.

"No, driving me insane because you make me feel things I haven't felt since I was alive," he said back, "But that's not important to you. You're doing what's important to you. So just stay away from me, and don't worry about if I'm here or not."

He stared down where his hand connected with Mikhal's body. Stay away from him. The words rang in his ears and he released the other. "You want me to give up my entire identity, everything I've worked for--" Or rather, everything his parents had wanted for him. "I want to be near you. That's why I came here. That's all I can do. I want you to stay for me."

It was too much to ask and he knew that, but he didn't think he could handle not having Mikhal around.

"Your identity?" Mikhal asked, arching a brow before he let out a quiet laugh. "You're pretending. You're not being who you really are at all. All I'm asking is for you to be who you are, but you worry too much what other people will think. What your parents will think. I feel sorry for you."

Greer didn't often get mad, but he didn't like that Mikhal was telling him he was just pretending. It infuriated him, actually and since his emotions were already running so high, anger spilled out of him. "How do you know who I really am? You think you've got me pegged?"

The energy radiating out from him was hot, a heated wash of agitation that crashed into Mikhal.

Mikhal sensed that anger, and it felt good. At least he knew for certain that Greer cared. The begging and sadness, that hadn't been quite enough. He stepped forward and grabbed a hold of Greer's arms as he dipped his head down so that their mouths were almost touching.

"Yes, I do think I have you pegged," he said quietly, "You really think nothing would happen between us if I stayed?"

With a quick inhale of breath, Greer slammed his eyes closed, finding it difficult to be so close to Mikhal. He should have been able to feel the man's breath on his lips at this distance, but there was none. That didn't bother him so much as remind him that it was, indeed, the man he wanted. "I can be good," he said. "We can be friends. I want to be around you." Because any other option was unbearable. Still, he leaned forward just a little so that he could feel Mikhal's lips brush against his own.

Mikhal closed his eyes as his hands tightened around Greer's arms. When he felt the faint brush of the sorcerer's lips against his own, he stepped closer and turned the faint brush of their mouths into a full blown kiss. He parted his lips and crushed himself against Greer as a soft noise escaped him.

Greer opened up to him utterly, body and soul simply unfolding against Mikhal's attention. He whimpered and wrapped his arms tightly around Mikhal's shoulders. It would be utterly impossible to live in Coldwater and just be the vampire's friend. He needed Mikhal more than anything, more than his religion and the realization was so powerful that he pushed the man away with a cry. But he kept hold of his shirt, twisted in his fingers as he tried to catch his breath and keep from sobbing.

Mikhal kept a tight hold of Greer, almost afraid the man might evaporate into thin air if he let him go. He pulled the sorcerer closer to him, and let his forehead rest against the other's as he closed his eyes and wet his lips. "We can't be friends," he said quietly. "It'll be easier if I go some place else."

When he got his bearings back, he just held on to Mikhal more tightly. "At least tell me where I can find you? What if I need to find you?" Maybe he could devise a spell to do it for him, track Mikhal so he knew where he went, all just in case.

"Something tells me that you'll be able to find me on your own just fine," Mikhal said before he pulled away and let Greer go. He wanted Greer to give up everything for him, but Greer wasn't going to. That was a hard pill to swallow for someone who was use to getting their way.

Greer let out a frustrated, if not childish, sound. He'd never been angrier or more upset about something I'm his life. All he could do right now was watch Mikhal go. It was hard, almost impossible, but he endured because there was no other option for him right now. His brain would simply not allow him to accept the possibility of being himself and leaving the clergy.
