open to Wendell
It had been a few days since Jeremiah and Julian had fallen into the creek and shifted. Both of the little boys had just been living it up as pups, lazing about, playing, and eating. It was late, around two in the morning and the two pups had ended up falling asleep in Joshua's bed. Joshua wasn't there, though, instead he was in Seattle with Andrew and was due back in the morning. During his sleep, Julian had shifted back. When he woke up, he was cold, and had no clothes. Miah was still a little black furball, and Julian was confused. Not only was he confused, he was in a lot of pain, too. His whole body ached something awful. He started to cry loudly as he sat up in the bed, wondering where everyone was. He was a little disoriented and out of it.

Wendell heard the cry, felt it in his bones, and raced upstairs. The fact that it was human didn't register until he saw Julian sitting on the bed and he breathed a sigh of relief. But it was short-lived when he saw that Miah was still a wolf. He also knew that Julian would probably be sore. His little body wasn't really built for that kind of shift just yet. "It's all right, Julie," he went to scoop him up, careful not to jar him too much. He sat on the bed, rubbing his little muscles to loosen them back up. "We'll get you a warm bath. You're all right."

When Wendell came into the room, Julian let his arms wrap around him and he just held on for dear life. He didn't care that he was naked, his body ached and he was confused. "My body hurts," he sniffled. "I don't remember anything. And I'm cold." He was still crying, but he was calming down now that Wendell was there. "Where's Miah and Joshua?"

Wendell wasn't exactly sure how much Julian understood about their nature. He knew that they'd seen wolves, played with them. Shifting was talked about freely around them, but at their age, who knew how much was ingested. "Joshua will be back tomorrow. He's in Seattle with Andrew." Jeremiah's whereabouts were harder to explain. "Do you remember falling in the water? Jeremiah is okay, don't worry. But both of your bodies tried to protect you. They grew fur to keep you warm and they changed to make you strong like Papa and Joshua. You turned into little wolves for awhile. Jeremiah hasn't changed back yet, but he will soon, I'm sure."

Julian knew that one day, when he was as old as Joshua, he'd turn into a wolf. But that was far away, and now he was even more confused. He clung to Wendell and blinked back his tears as his gaze fall on Jeremiah. "It's a puppy," he said softly. He reached out and touched the top of the little black wolf's head and he furrowed his brow. It felt like Jeremiah, but he didn't understand why. "It's Miah?"

"Yes, it's Miah," Wendell reassured him. "He's younger than you, so it's probably taking his body longer to figure out how to get back to his usual self." That was the best explanation Wendell could think of. He kept stroking Julian's hair, doing everything he could to keep the other calm. He didn't know how stable his form was, especially since the first few shifts were always shaky for born wolves and they could come at any time if emotions weren't controlled. Children's emotions were anything but controlled and Wendell worried the boys would start shifting more often now and at inopportune times. He would have to discuss with Hunter how he'd been able to control it so young.

A thought occurred to him and he looked down at Julian. "Did you ever meet your grampa? Your mom's dad? Did he ever come and visit you and your brothers?"

Julian was trembling, his entire body aching right down to the bone. He'd never felt so sore in his entire life, not even after some of the abuse he'd suffered back home with his mother and her boyfriend.

"No," he answered, his voice a little whiney. "Never met him or anyone," he said as he rubbed at one of his eyes with a tiny fist. "I'm cold and I hurt."

Wendell had to assume that there was some purebloodedness somewhere in the boys' family, but he didn't know where. When Julian started to get a little fussy, he stood up gently. Scooping up Jeremiah as well, he tucked the little black puppy under his arm and headed to the bathroom.

"A warm bath and a Tylenol will help you feel better." Though Wendell supposed that if Julian had shifted already that his metabolism would have changed along with it and the tylenol wouldn't be of much use. Perhaps meat would do the trick, but a bath was first. He set the puppy down on the fluffy bathroom rug and went about drawing a warm bath. It would heat Julian's muscles and hopefully relax them for him. He was too young to remember what Arabella used to do for Hunter, not even having been born yet.

Julian grabbed a towel out of the little cupboard in the bathroom and wrapped himself up in it while Wendell started the bath up. He sat down next to Jeremiah and stared at him curiously before he rubbed at his eyes again and scooted closer to Wendell.

"Was I black, too?" he asked Wendell as he tipped his head up to look at him. "Like Miah?"

For some reason, Wendell was pleased at the question. He always appreciated curiosity and he was glad that Julian was interested in what he'd looked like, wanted to know more. "No, you were all white like Joshua." Wendell smiled and shut off the water. "Ready to get in? It's nice and warm."

Once Julian was in the tub, he scooped water up in a pitcher and poured it gently down the boy's back. "You might be a little sore for tonight. Shifting can be hard on your body, but you're being very brave. Are you hungry?"

"I was? Did Joshua see me?" Julian asked, and he seemed to be very pleased with the information. It was obvious that he looked up to Joshua a lot, and the idea that he looked like his big brother made him very happy. If he hadn't been so sore and achey, he would have been all smiles. "I'm starving," he answered once Wendell had him in the tub. "Did I eat at all, Daddy? I don't feel like I ate at all."

Wendell saw Julian's behavior as a good sign. He seemed to be handling this very well and that was a big relief. "Oh yes, Joshua saw you. Lots of the pack saw you and they were very surprised. It's very special to be able to shift when you're so young." He wanted the experience (though painful) to be a good thing for Julian. It would prepare him better for the change later in life, and if it came again sooner, well all the more reason for him to be primed for it.

"You ate plenty when you were a pup, but our bodies always need food. We'll fix you something good." While Julian was in there, he took the opportunity to soap him up a little and wash his hair. He warmed the water up again about halfway through to be certain he didn't give Julian a chill. When he plucked him out of the bath, he wrapped him in a big fluffy towel and dried him off well before depositing him into some of his warm pajamas.

"Why's it special?" Julian asked Wendell once the older wolf had him out of the tub and was tugging his pajamas on. "Will I do it again? I don't know if I want to, I feel like my bones hurt," he said with a frown as glanced down at Jeremiah. It was kind of cool to think about himself as a wolf, but his body was so achey and tired. The bath had helped, though. He looked back up at Wendell and held his arms up so that he could be picked up, and once he was settled on Wendell's hip he let his head tip forward to rest against Wen's shoulder. "Did I miss anything important?"

Wendell picked up Miah as well, not wanting to leave him alone when he'd been sleeping with Julian and might be afraid when he woke up. The puppy stirred and whined a little.

"As far as I know, only purebloods shift before they're fifteen or so. Only Hunter and Austin because their mother was a werewolf too." He didn't quite know what that meant for the two little ones, or for Joshua. "You might do it again, but probably only if you're in danger or very scared." Once down in the kitchen, Wendell laughed a little at the last question. Julian sounded like a much older member of the pack, trying to catch up on business. It was sweet and a good sign too because he must feel included, a true member--which he was. "Kellen and Kieran came to visit for a little while. Kieran is around your age and you all played together. He'll come back again and you can meet him."

Julian looked perplexed. He reached over to touch the top of Jeremiah's head before he looked up at Wendell while the older wolf carried them downstairs.

"My Mom wasn't a wolf, I never seen her as one and she didn't feel like one," he said softly. "She didn't feel like you or Papa or the others here. She didn't hold me like this neither."

At that last part, Wendell leaned over and kissed the little boy's head. How could someone not want to hold and comfort Julian like this, especially their mother? He thought of his own mother and the fact that she'd left even though his father had begged her to stay. Charlie loved Marigold more than anything and the woman had left without even knowing about werewolves. She was just a wanderer. Wendell had spent many years of his life wishing she'd wander back their way.

Opening a frozen pack of hamburger patties, he started the preparations for a big meal of burgers and chips. Jeremiah would eat the patties alone, and mostly just thawed. "Well, maybe we'll find out about your other family members. Maybe your father was like Hunter. Or maybe your mother had someone who was a werewolf in her family. Or maybe you're just special for some other reason." He smiled, kind of liking that last idea.

Julian lifted a hand to allow his fingers to curl around the strands of Wendell's hair. He kept his legs wrapped around Wen's hips and let his head rest against the older wolf's shoulders while he watched Wen get everything out. He liked that Wendell was doing everything one handed because he didn't want to get down.

"Where's Papa?" he asked as he looked up at Wen curiously. "And Coby? And our real puppy? Is it with Jacob or Ever and Duke?"

"Papa is upstairs. Coby is with Vaughn, and I'm pretty sure the puppy is with Everett and Duke." At least it had been the last time he'd seen it scampering around, following the larger dog's every move.

When the hamburger dropped into the frying pan, it sizzled and cooked pretty quickly. While it cooked, Wendell worked on putting mayo and ketchup on the buns.

He and Jeremiah still hadn't named the puppy just yet. They wanted to name him the perfect name, and they wanted to know his personality. The little boxer was full of energy and Julian was definitely in love with the little guy. Settling his head in against the crook of Wendell's neck, Julie yawned and glanced down at Miah who was staring up at them and wagging his tail.

"He smells the hangaburgers," he said softly. "I think I want to learn how to play the piano," he added randomely.

"That's a very good idea," he agreed. "I'm sure someone would like to teach you." There were a few of their ranks who could play the piano and Wendell liked the idea that the boys learn an instrument. He always thought of them as a unit, and assumed Jeremiah would be interested if Julian was. He wondered if he shouldn't watch that tendency carefully and stop making assumptions about the boys' interests in case they ever diverged.

When a bit of hamburger was thawed enough, he plucked it from the pan and gave it to Jeremiah, watching to make sure he didn't gulp it down too fast. When the meat was cooked, he put it on the buns with some cheese so it would melt and then carried Julian over to the table where he sat him down. "What made you think of that? The piano, I mean. Have you been wanting to learn?"

Julian didn't want to let go of Wendell, but the smell of food lured him away and he picked up the hamburger to take a big bite. With is mouth full, and a little bit of cheese on the corners of his mouth, he looked up at Wendell and nodded his head.

"I like the way it sounds," he said, "Can I have something to drink, please?" he added before he took another bite and chewed. "I heard Emmy playing the piano when I went to see Coby and I liked it. He plays real good, have you heard him? Do you play anything?"

There was nothing more satisfying to Wendell than when the boys were eating heartily. He took a moment to enjoy it before hopping up to get him a glass of milk and he set a bowl of water down for Jeremiah. He liked to imagine that Hunter looked like that when he'd been young. There was something comforting about the thought of Arabella taking care of Hunter as a puppy.

"Yes, he is very good, isn't he." Wendell enjoyed music, especially its mathematical components, but he'd never been very good at replicating it. "I don't play an instrument, no. My fingers get all tangled and I get nervous if people are watching."

"Papa says you are very smart, he says you help find bad guys sometimes," Julie said as he reached for the milk and took a few sips. When he set the cup back down, he had a milk moustache though he didn't seem to notice as he went back to eating his burger. "I want to be as smart as you one day. How do you get as smart as you?"

Normally, Wendell would fawn over the boy, wiping it off for him as he ate, but he was enjoying watching him far too much to change anything at the moment. "You read lots of books, and you ask lots of questions. I think you're off to a fine start." Especially with the questions part, he thought to himself fondly.

Wendell sat back in the chair and sipped at the glass of milk he'd poured for himself as well. "Julie, do you think you'd ever want to meet anyone from your family if you could? A grandpa maybe? An uncle?" He wasn't sure he wanted to go digging if the boy was wholly opposed to meeting anyone Wendell might uncover.

Julian shoved a few chips in his mouth and he gave one to Jeremiah before he looked over at Wendell thoughtfully. He furrowed his brow a little bit.

"I don't know," he said. "I think you and Papa and Miah and Joshua are my family." Meaning they were more than enough. "My Mama wasn't nice. My Dad was nice, though." From what Julian could remember, anyway. "What if a grandpa or an uncle were mean?"

Wendell always struggled with the line between good curiosity and the kind that opened Pandora's box. Julian's words were enough to make him think better of poking around into their pasts. "You're right. We're your family and I'm glad you came to us." There was no need to find more and possibly uncover problems along the way, even if Wendell was dying to know if his theory had been correct. "Joshua should be back tomorrow. He'll be pleased to see you changed back."

Julian was still quite sore, but now it just felt like he'd played a little too hard. He was adjusting back quite well. He swung his legs a little and finished off his burger before he drank some more milk. By now his face was a complete mess, but he looked very happy and satisfied.

"Is Andrew coming with him?" Julie asked. He'd gotten use to Andrew, and he liked the sorcerer.

"Yes, I expect Andrew will be coming back with him." He wondered what was going to happen there, where they all would end up. He wasn't sure he loved the idea of sending Julian and Jeremiah out to Seattle for weekends at a time, but he knew Joshua could handle the boys. "You like Andrew? I do too. I need to talk to him more about his magic. I want to know how it works."

"Joshua wants to know, too," Julian said as he licked cheese off of his fingers. He sat back with a heavy sigh as his hand settled on his very full tummy. "Andrew doesn't tell him, he just smiles," Julie added as he started to swing his feet. "You make the best food I ever had. Ever."

"Do I? You should try one of Vance's concoctions." He got up to get a washcloth so he could wash Julian off. "I suppose a magician never reveals his secrets." He scrubbed the washcloth gently over the boy's face until he was clean and then washed his hands.

"How about some tv? Maybe a nap? Both?" He gave some options as he cleaned up the table.

"Con..cotion?" Julian asked as he wrinkled his face up and closed his eyes while Wendell cleaned him up. He held up his hands next and let Wendell clean them before he picked up his plate to carry it over to the sink. He managed to get it inside the sink, but he couldn't rinse it since he wasn't tall enough, and he turned to look over at Wen while the older wolf cleaned up the table. "Will you read to me?"

He couldn't hide his pleasure at that request. He never wanted to push his preferences on the boys, but the fact that Julian often chose what Wendell wanted made him very happy.

"Of course, that's a very good idea." He picked Julian up and let Jeremiah bound after them as he went upstairs to select a book.

Julian looped his arms around Wendell's shoulders when he was picked up, and he let his head rest against the bigger wolf's shoulder. Once they were upstairs and Wendell was kneeling in front of the little bookcase in Julian and Jeremiah's room, Julian picked out a Halloween book and handed it over to Wendell.

"This one, I like Halloween," he said with confidence. "I wanna be Joshua for Halloween."

Wendell looked down at the halloween cover, Clifford the big red dog had a giant sheet over his head with eye holes poked through. He loved this one when he was a child too. "You already look very much like him. Will you borrow some of his clothes?" He thought it was terribly cute and he knew Joshua would be pleased.

He sat down on the bed and kept his arm around Julian as he opened the book and set it on his lap so that the little boy could be sure to see the pictures and the words.

"I dunno, he's much bigger than me," Julian reasoned as he wrinkled his forehead up in thought. It was obvious by the look of concentration on his face that he was trying to work out a solution in his head. "His clothes wouldn't fit me. But maybe someone could make me matching clothes? They would have to make some for Miah too because he likes to be what I am, too."

"Halloween is a ways off yet. We'll see what we can come up with, all right?" The people from the Portland pack had a designer amongst them and Wendell always assumed that people would be willing to help. The fox would be able to help the boys with a costume this year, Wendell was sure.

He started reading from the book, sure to do voices in the proper spots. He wasn't over the top with his dramatics, but he tried to make it entertaining. Joshua was far better at making a spectacle out of himself when he read a story and he'd shown Wendell how to do it, but Wen was a little more reserved.
