open to Wendell
It had been a few days since Jeremiah and Julian had fallen into the creek and shifted. Both of the little boys had just been living it up as pups, lazing about, playing, and eating. It was late, around two in the morning and the two pups had ended up falling asleep in Joshua's bed. Joshua wasn't there, though, instead he was in Seattle with Andrew and was due back in the morning. During his sleep, Julian had shifted back. When he woke up, he was cold, and had no clothes. Miah was still a little black furball, and Julian was confused. Not only was he confused, he was in a lot of pain, too. His whole body ached something awful. He started to cry loudly as he sat up in the bed, wondering where everyone was. He was a little disoriented and out of it.

"Papa is upstairs. Coby is with Vaughn, and I'm pretty sure the puppy is with Everett and Duke." At least it had been the last time he'd seen it scampering around, following the larger dog's every move.

When the hamburger dropped into the frying pan, it sizzled and cooked pretty quickly. While it cooked, Wendell worked on putting mayo and ketchup on the buns.

He and Jeremiah still hadn't named the puppy just yet. They wanted to name him the perfect name, and they wanted to know his personality. The little boxer was full of energy and Julian was definitely in love with the little guy. Settling his head in against the crook of Wendell's neck, Julie yawned and glanced down at Miah who was staring up at them and wagging his tail.

"He smells the hangaburgers," he said softly. "I think I want to learn how to play the piano," he added randomely.

"That's a very good idea," he agreed. "I'm sure someone would like to teach you." There were a few of their ranks who could play the piano and Wendell liked the idea that the boys learn an instrument. He always thought of them as a unit, and assumed Jeremiah would be interested if Julian was. He wondered if he shouldn't watch that tendency carefully and stop making assumptions about the boys' interests in case they ever diverged.

When a bit of hamburger was thawed enough, he plucked it from the pan and gave it to Jeremiah, watching to make sure he didn't gulp it down too fast. When the meat was cooked, he put it on the buns with some cheese so it would melt and then carried Julian over to the table where he sat him down. "What made you think of that? The piano, I mean. Have you been wanting to learn?"

Julian didn't want to let go of Wendell, but the smell of food lured him away and he picked up the hamburger to take a big bite. With is mouth full, and a little bit of cheese on the corners of his mouth, he looked up at Wendell and nodded his head.

"I like the way it sounds," he said, "Can I have something to drink, please?" he added before he took another bite and chewed. "I heard Emmy playing the piano when I went to see Coby and I liked it. He plays real good, have you heard him? Do you play anything?"

There was nothing more satisfying to Wendell than when the boys were eating heartily. He took a moment to enjoy it before hopping up to get him a glass of milk and he set a bowl of water down for Jeremiah. He liked to imagine that Hunter looked like that when he'd been young. There was something comforting about the thought of Arabella taking care of Hunter as a puppy.

"Yes, he is very good, isn't he." Wendell enjoyed music, especially its mathematical components, but he'd never been very good at replicating it. "I don't play an instrument, no. My fingers get all tangled and I get nervous if people are watching."

"Papa says you are very smart, he says you help find bad guys sometimes," Julie said as he reached for the milk and took a few sips. When he set the cup back down, he had a milk moustache though he didn't seem to notice as he went back to eating his burger. "I want to be as smart as you one day. How do you get as smart as you?"

Normally, Wendell would fawn over the boy, wiping it off for him as he ate, but he was enjoying watching him far too much to change anything at the moment. "You read lots of books, and you ask lots of questions. I think you're off to a fine start." Especially with the questions part, he thought to himself fondly.

Wendell sat back in the chair and sipped at the glass of milk he'd poured for himself as well. "Julie, do you think you'd ever want to meet anyone from your family if you could? A grandpa maybe? An uncle?" He wasn't sure he wanted to go digging if the boy was wholly opposed to meeting anyone Wendell might uncover.

Julian shoved a few chips in his mouth and he gave one to Jeremiah before he looked over at Wendell thoughtfully. He furrowed his brow a little bit.

"I don't know," he said. "I think you and Papa and Miah and Joshua are my family." Meaning they were more than enough. "My Mama wasn't nice. My Dad was nice, though." From what Julian could remember, anyway. "What if a grandpa or an uncle were mean?"

Wendell always struggled with the line between good curiosity and the kind that opened Pandora's box. Julian's words were enough to make him think better of poking around into their pasts. "You're right. We're your family and I'm glad you came to us." There was no need to find more and possibly uncover problems along the way, even if Wendell was dying to know if his theory had been correct. "Joshua should be back tomorrow. He'll be pleased to see you changed back."

Julian was still quite sore, but now it just felt like he'd played a little too hard. He was adjusting back quite well. He swung his legs a little and finished off his burger before he drank some more milk. By now his face was a complete mess, but he looked very happy and satisfied.

"Is Andrew coming with him?" Julie asked. He'd gotten use to Andrew, and he liked the sorcerer.

"Yes, I expect Andrew will be coming back with him." He wondered what was going to happen there, where they all would end up. He wasn't sure he loved the idea of sending Julian and Jeremiah out to Seattle for weekends at a time, but he knew Joshua could handle the boys. "You like Andrew? I do too. I need to talk to him more about his magic. I want to know how it works."

"Joshua wants to know, too," Julian said as he licked cheese off of his fingers. He sat back with a heavy sigh as his hand settled on his very full tummy. "Andrew doesn't tell him, he just smiles," Julie added as he started to swing his feet. "You make the best food I ever had. Ever."

"Do I? You should try one of Vance's concoctions." He got up to get a washcloth so he could wash Julian off. "I suppose a magician never reveals his secrets." He scrubbed the washcloth gently over the boy's face until he was clean and then washed his hands.

"How about some tv? Maybe a nap? Both?" He gave some options as he cleaned up the table.

"Con..cotion?" Julian asked as he wrinkled his face up and closed his eyes while Wendell cleaned him up. He held up his hands next and let Wendell clean them before he picked up his plate to carry it over to the sink. He managed to get it inside the sink, but he couldn't rinse it since he wasn't tall enough, and he turned to look over at Wen while the older wolf cleaned up the table. "Will you read to me?"

He couldn't hide his pleasure at that request. He never wanted to push his preferences on the boys, but the fact that Julian often chose what Wendell wanted made him very happy.

"Of course, that's a very good idea." He picked Julian up and let Jeremiah bound after them as he went upstairs to select a book.

Julian looped his arms around Wendell's shoulders when he was picked up, and he let his head rest against the bigger wolf's shoulder. Once they were upstairs and Wendell was kneeling in front of the little bookcase in Julian and Jeremiah's room, Julian picked out a Halloween book and handed it over to Wendell.

"This one, I like Halloween," he said with confidence. "I wanna be Joshua for Halloween."

Wendell looked down at the halloween cover, Clifford the big red dog had a giant sheet over his head with eye holes poked through. He loved this one when he was a child too. "You already look very much like him. Will you borrow some of his clothes?" He thought it was terribly cute and he knew Joshua would be pleased.

He sat down on the bed and kept his arm around Julian as he opened the book and set it on his lap so that the little boy could be sure to see the pictures and the words.

"I dunno, he's much bigger than me," Julian reasoned as he wrinkled his forehead up in thought. It was obvious by the look of concentration on his face that he was trying to work out a solution in his head. "His clothes wouldn't fit me. But maybe someone could make me matching clothes? They would have to make some for Miah too because he likes to be what I am, too."

"Halloween is a ways off yet. We'll see what we can come up with, all right?" The people from the Portland pack had a designer amongst them and Wendell always assumed that people would be willing to help. The fox would be able to help the boys with a costume this year, Wendell was sure.

He started reading from the book, sure to do voices in the proper spots. He wasn't over the top with his dramatics, but he tried to make it entertaining. Joshua was far better at making a spectacle out of himself when he read a story and he'd shown Wendell how to do it, but Wen was a little more reserved.

Julian smiled happily and giggled whenever Wendell spoke in the different voices. He was quite exhausted despite how much sleep he got as a pup, though, and soon he fell asleep curled up against Wendell's chest.
