A new beginning.
After ending things with Clark, Lois found herself uncomfortable at the Daily Planet.  It was strange to her; she'd always been able to do anything she wanted without much concern for the personal politics for things but after having been with Clark and having worked so closely with him--and not just at the newspaper--being there was both awkward and painful.  A few weeks after the breakup, Lois started putting out her application elsewhere and it wasn't long until she landed what appeared to be one hell of a job: PR executive for LexCorp.

A month in she found that she really enjoyed it.  It was a busy change of pace and she felt challenged.  And in usual Lois style, she was putting in long hours.  This was another long night in her office, handling the smaller details of a press release.  Someone else could have done it, but Lois was a perfectionist.  She'd do it herself.

"Your just answered your own question, Miss Lane. I know that my competitors don't work nearly as hard as I do, and that's why LexCorp, for all the poor press people try to throw at us, is at the top in regards to technological and medical expertise. Only Wayne Enterprises can really be said to be in the same league, and we both know how Bruce Wayne operates." Lex grins.

"I work because it's all I know. My father did the same, right up until his death. I learned to be independent and to think critically from the time I had to myself." he tells her.

"I'll ask you the same question: what keeps you here so late, when you could be out having an evening on the town or watching a movie? You chose to apply here, rather than another newspaper, after you left the The Daily Planet.

I'm not so foolish to believe that you didn't have other offers to pursue your passion elsewhere. Why did you /really/ come to LexCorp?" he asks.

"Truth? I didn't want to work in an industry where I would be constantly confronted with Clark Kent."

"Were the two of you actually an item? I'm sorry, but I just don't see it. You're so put-together and confident and...Mr. Kent just doesn't inspire the same confidence at first glance." Lex says.

"He's a good reporter, yes, but he's not /great/, not like you."

"Clark is very different when you actually know him," she offered. Wasn't that the truth... "I thank you for the compliment, but great is what I strive for. I haven't achieved it. Yet."

"Humility is an attractive trait, Miss Lane. You wear it well." Lex says.

"Ah, so that's what you've been looking at." She smiles a bit. "Thank you."

"Among other things, Miss Lane." Lex smiles.

"Well, they do say you are a man who is observant." Lois smiles and when they get into his office, she sits down across from his desk. "So what were you getting for dinner tonight?"

"Chinese. I've been craving it for three weeks." Lex says.

"Are you okay with that?" he asks.

"I love Chinese. Also? It's your dinner and you've been so gracious as to invite me. Even if I didn't love Chinese, I'd be great with it. Really, this beats a Diet Coke."

She smiled at him.

"I really appreciate this. I have to admit that I didn't really expect to have much interaction with you in general."

Lois looks around his office a bit. It's a vast difference from what she was used to seeing with Perry. Perry was a train wreck; Lex's office was exceptionally tidy.

"You're my PR Director. Why would we /not/ have as much contact as possible? I'm depending on you to make LexCorp, and me, by extension, look good. You need access to me and this is how it happens." Lex says.

"That makes logical sense, certainly. I just never really saw you as the hands-on type. You have quite the army here. Though I suppose your direct leadership is what sets you apart."

"I like to think that's part of it, Lois." Lex says, making the call for the food. The place he orders from knows him very well and assures him that the food will be ready and delivered within the next half-hour.

He hangs up the phone and returns his attention to Lois.

"Some people call it 'micromanaging' and, on some level, maybe their right. I feel, however, that people need to see their leaders in action from time to time or both sides suffer a disconnect. Morale suffers along with the quality of work. Discontent arises, which costs time and money.

People may say what they want about me publicly, but my employees know I treat them well." Lex says.

"I have to admit that I haven't heard anyone say anything negative about being in your employ." It was true, and it was something that had surprised Lois a bit. At first it had seemed strange, but she couldn't find any indication that the lack of complaint was anything but genuine.

"I don't know that I would say that you micromanage, though. This is the first I've interacted with you since my starting here and considering what I do for you, you seem to give me a great deal of freedom."

"Just because I'm not over your shoulders watching you at all times doesn't mean I'm not micromanaging you." Lex says with a sly grin.

"I keep tabs and I assign work load according to aptitude." he says.

"You have a lot of aptitude."

"Interesting. And since you clearly had plans for what to do should I become available, what plans do you have for me as your employee, Mr. Luthor?"
