Awakenings
First, there is pain.

/Begone, Spirit of Vengeance/

The pain begins at the same time the chanting does. He can feel himself being torn apart at the seams, a feeling unfamiliar after so long as one who cannot feel pain. His alter-ego tries in vain to keep hold of him, but soon enough he finds himself adrift in the sea of darkness.

The chanting grows louder, more urgent and the pain in his stomach, his mind and his heart become nearly unbearable, followed by a sharp pain in his eyes and across his body.

Still, he struggles toward the rhythmic voices, unwilling to let this this deter him. He can feel the wind on his face, like when he's flying followed by the rain.

Nearly five years after his death, Hal Jordan climbs out of his grave, casting his eyes on the world around him.

The first thing he sees are bodies.

Scrambling out of the hole in the earth, Hal runs off into the Coast City night, naked, wet and afraid.

He has to find somethng or someone that can make this make sense.

He has to find Carol.

/Ohhhhhhhhhhh/ Carol felt her day begin to seep out of her bones. "That feels good. I'm starved. Business lunch, so I didn't actually eat. The first run of a new plane and it has a lot of promise."

She moaned appreciatively as he worked a particularly stiff muscle. "Were you able to get in touch with Ollie?"

"Yeah, I did, but he's got some of his own CEO stuff to handle, so it'll be a day or two before he can get out this way." Hal says, working on her muscles.

"Which is good with me, because I wanted to talk to you about something...and maybe get him to do me a favor once he arrives." Hal says.

"Carol, I've been thinking a lot about how things went between us before I died and I remember that the last thought in my head when I was dying was about how badly I treated you...and how much I loved you.

Lately, I've been thinking about how much I still love you, and that I have a second chance to fix my life the way I want it, the way it should be." he says, stopping the massage and walking around her chair to kneel before her as he pulls a small box out of his pocket.

"So, I got to thinking about the one thing I want to do more than anything in this life and it hit me immediately. I want Ollie to be my Best Man...

because I want you to consider becoming Carol Jordan, CEO. Will you marry me, Carol?" Hal asks.

"And before you ask, no, you don't need to change the company name." he adds quickly.

When she could think again, she'd remember how many times in the past one or the other had been at point in their lives, but never both of them at the same time.

Coming a week after he'd literally crawled out of a grave, she could almost understand his timing now.

She put a hand on his holding the small box. "Hal, you know I love you, but are you sure you should be making such important decisions so soon? And what's wrong with Carol Ferris-Jordan, CEO?"

"Well, it doesn't have /quite/ the same ring to it, but it is your call." Hal says, kissing her.

"But...I /want/ this, Carol. I want this more than I've wanted anything. I want you." he says.

"You're going through a lot right now," she said when he let her breathe, "and I'm not going anywhere. Get your ring and settle back into your life."

She brushed the hair back from his temple. Still no gray. She missed the gray. "Give it some time, Hal. It's only been a week. Jumping into marriage would only hurt us both if the feeling wears off when you're Green Lantern again."

"Okay, Carol, hold on. My being Green Lantern and loving you don't have to be mutually exclusive. I can love you and help people at the same time...unless that's not something you want anymore." he says.

"What's /really/ bothering you, Carol? There's something you're not saying to me." he says.

"I would never tell you to stop helping people, Hal. The one time I asked you to give up the ring was such a disaster that I've learned my lesson." Carol took his hand in both of hers. "Hal Jordan and Green Lantern each enjoyed a ... certain reputation. Well deserved reputations from what I remember."

"Oh. Oh." Hal says, realizing what's upsetting her so much.

"Carol, I'm in love with /you/." he says. "I'm not here to do that."

"Hal, I'm saying it's been a week and you're getting yourself back. I believe you when you say you love me. I believed it everytime you said it over the years. I'm so glad you're back." Carol released his hand and cupped his face. "Give it a year. If you still want to marry me, then let's talk. Okay?"

"So, you want to wait a year before we get married? Okay, I can do that." Hal smiles.

"Long engagements are always nice. Gives us time to get to know one another." he says.

"Again."

Carol opened her mouth to correct him, it was a year before they discussed it, but this was a better reaction. Hal was impulsive and fearless, things that made magic in a plane's cockpit. For marriage, not so much. A year would be good for them, especially if he cooked every now and then. She could stand some wooing.

"A year," she said and leaned in to plant a soft kiss on his mouth. "It'll be good for us."

Hal kisses her, knowing that he's going to have to work extra hard for the next year to prove himself worthy.

"So...that means it's just you and me, right? No one else?" he asks.

She blinked at him. No one else?

/Ohhh...no one else!/ It had been too long since her last date. She hardly knew anything outside of work anymore.

"Just us. Now, feed me. I'm starving."

"Yes, dear. Happy CEO's come from Coast City." he grins, then goes to get her a bowl of chili and and some cornbread.

He'll bring the food straight to her and then serve himself, before sitting down to eat with her.
