"A lot of things are happening all at once, Jane. I want to stay with you, Jane. I love you and I never thought I would know what that's like. But if I stay, you're going to get pulled into this and it wreck your life. I swore that I would never be a burden to you." Robert says quietly.
"You are the only woman in my life that I want to be a better man for, but I understand that my coming and going isn't fair to you." he says, gathering up his nerve. He doesn't want to say the words on the edge of his lips, because he's terrified, for the first time in his life, that Jane might actually agree.
"I understand if you don't want to be with me anymore. You deserve someone who will be with you every night when you come home, someone that won't make you wait for days or weeks on end to find out if he'd alive or dead." Robert says.
"I love you, but I won't ask to you to wait for me." he says.
