And they shall kneel... (Kayla & Doom Patrol)
Somwhere in the Midwest, Two days ago.

The fog lifted from his mind for the first time in years a few months ago, but he'd always known on some level, that this was not who he was. Even after all of the Kryptonite, the drugs, the tests and above all, the /pain/....General Zod knew that his current situation was beneath his station. He was a hero, a warrior and a savior; how had he ended up like this?

As the drugs slowly but surely faded from his system and clarity returned, he remembered:

A human was responsible.

Stand with me, Zod, and together, we will crush...under our heel.

Crush who?

Was it the first man he'd killed in his escape from that facility, or the tenth? He could hardly walk, barely run and couldn't fly at all. His skin was not nearly as durable as it once was. They stunned and shocked him, battered and shot him, but Zod refused to let them win. His mind took him to a place beyond the pain, beyond the weakness, to a time when he was /strong/. To a time when his word was law and none dared oppose him.

His mind finally broke through the deepest of the fog when he remembered the times that people would kneel before him. And they would kneel again, once he had his way. He was glad he'd learn to read the stars after his escape from the Phantom Zone, especially here on this backwater planet that Kal-El loved so much, with all of its backwater people. There were so primitive and useless. Kal-El could have ruled as a god here, but he chose to blend in with the monkeys and lower himself from the status of a proud son of Krypton. It made him sick.

Some time later, after all the screaming died down and the facility was in flames, Zod knew where he had to go, what he had to do.

He limped away through the forest toward his destination, gaining strength and speed with every moment. He still couldn't fly, but he could walk, and then he could run, albeit it stiffly and briefly.

He had to put out the call.

Two Days Later- Colorado

The Inter-Active Construct pulsed with cerulean light, its chrome surfaces showing Zod his reflection. It still worked after all this time, which he'd never doubted. He simply hoped that Kal-El would disregard the signal, or show up last, after he'd gathered his army. He was in no shape to fight the so-called "Superman"; his powers were not returning. Luthor's treachery had been total.

Soon, a wave of blue energy expands outward from Keystone City, radiating across the world to any living Kryptonian on Earth. They simply feel the urge to follow their instincts to this place.

Zod leans against a wall and waits for his soldiers to come.

There was nothing of interest going on. It didn't matter what the news said or what others might be experiencing; Kayla Luthor was, as she most often was, bored, though she wasn't particularly one to avail herself of anything other than boredom. Home just outside of Metropolis she was lounging morosely on a couch and wasting away another random afternoon. There wasn't even anything on television to watch and Kayla was considering her usual boredom buster option--shopping--when she noticed something unusual. The television image blinked and then there was this...blueness and it wasn't just light; she could feel it.

There was no explaining what happened next; Kayla got up and just went towards that blue light, walking first, then jogging and then flat-out flying until she reaches Keystone City and the source of the light, a look of both need and bewilderment on her face as her feet touch ground.

Flying wasn't something Kayla had really done much of before.

"Hello?"

"Enter." Zod says, standing up as quickly as he can, as the voice surprised him. He has to suppress a grimace of pain as he does so, but he stands tall, determined not to show weakness before a subordinate.

The warehouse is still somewhat dark and his eyes have difficulty adjusting to the light, so he's not aware of the person.

"And kneel." he finishes, expecting obedience.

"Kneel?"

One brow arched.

"Kayla Luthor kneels for no one."

A Luthor? Here?

"You are brave to come here, bearing that name. Lex Luthor is a liar and a deceiver, and his relations can be no better. How do you possess that name and call yourself Kryptonian?" Zod inquires.

Kryptonian? Like that joke Superman? Her eyes narrowed a bit.

"Lex Luthor is my father. He adopted me after the death of my parents. My mother, he said, was special and important." She stepped forward to look more closely at him.

"Who are you?"

Zod moves closer to the young woman, his eyes widening as he sees her face.

"Galatea...?" he whispers, as though he cannot believe what's happening. He moves closer, his hand reaching out to touch her.

"No, you are not my Galatea...but I can see her in your eyes, in your stance. I can see hear her in your voice." Zod whispers, realizing what Luthor had done after he locked Zod away.

"Where is your mother?" he asks.

"My mama died when I was small. Father says she died in an accident." Kayla looked at him curiously. Something about him had changed when he really looked at her.

"Did you know her?"

"Your mother was my wife. She...said that she wanted to tell me something one evening several years ago, but Luthor summoned me to speak with him. I didn't want to go, but he said he had a plan to deal with...a mutual enemy.

He betrayed me and used Kryptonite to weaken me, then locked me away. He taunted me by telling me that he would take care of my wife for me." Zod says, anger coloring his tone.

"If I had known, you would not have spent a day in his house." Zod says.

"What is your name, child?" he asks.

He was her mother's husband. Kayla stood there for a moment and let that settle over here, reality dawning on her in delicate increments. She blinked a few times and shook her head as though battling with her self, arguing over facts that her very cells knew and her mind rejected.

There was a war going on inside the young woman before Zod.

"Kayla. My mother called me Kay El..."

"Kay...El? Once, long ago, I respected the House of El. Kayla is a beautiful name." Zod says.

"Do you know why you are here?" he asks.

"Kay El Zod," she finishes.

"No, I don't. I just felt compelled and here I am. Something made me come here."

"The Inter-Active Construct brought you here, Kayla. It has called out to all of our people on this planet. Now, it is time to enact a plan that was years in the making." Zod intones.

"Krypton, our homeworld, will rise again. And when it does, Earth will kneel before us."

...Earth will kneel before us.

How many times in her life had she felt that desperate need, the angry desire to force an entire world to give unto her the reverence and respect she demanded.

"It wasn't just that," she says. "It was you. You're my father. I am answering my family's call. How do we make this pathetic rock kneel?"

"Long ago, I managed to make alliances with other worlds that would aid me in creating an army that would shake the cosmos. I obtained promises from the Thanagarians, the Daxamites and others who would aid us in this endeavor.

But on Daxam is the /key/ to all of this. On Daxam lies a way to resurrect Krypton, our homeworld. Once Krypton is reformed beneath a yellow sun, we will rule. The Daxamites are an offshot of our people and possess the same abilities under a yellow sun.

If they still exist, they will aid us. But I am not capable of space travel yet and this primitive world doesn't have it.

Are you willing to help, Kayla?" Zod asks, looking into her eyes.

"Yes. I am willing to help...Father."

And then, the girl kneeled.

Zod smiled in pride. His daughter was everything he'd ever hoped for. Together, they would see his dream of a new Krypton become reality and even Kal-El would be forced to recognize his intelligence.

"Rise, Kayla. There is much I must tell you and very little time to do so."

Kayla rose dutifully upon being told to do so, her eyes alight with the same wonder that her mother's had once held upon first truly seeing Zod. For Galatea, it had been love at first sight but for Kayla? It was finally an understanding of where she belonged.

"Where shall we begin?"

"Come, I will tell you what you must do." Zod says, leading her to the Inter-Active Construct.

He begins explaining the machine and how it will help her find the necessary components to complete a device called the "Raomaker". Zod explains that Rao was the sun and god of Krypton before it fell, and why the machine is named as such.

Kayla listened intently as her father explained things to her, but at some point she reached out and touched his hand with hers, stopping him.

"Father...I hear someone approaching."

"It could be more of our people, Kayla. I will go out and greet them while you familiarize yourself with the machine. Do not worry; I will return shortly." he says, turning to go.
