Death and Life, or, Henry's Healing Harem
Of course Black Hand would attack Coast City with his latest scheme for world-devastation when Dad and Carol were both out of the galaxy. Thankfully, he did have some backup -- his new Blue Lantern partner was pretty much the only thing keeping Henry alive right now.

Henry hopes that the Guardians can do something to help his arm. Black Hand managed to touch him, and his left arm feels like it's shriveling away, held in check only by his green charge. But it's not time to worry about saving his arm right now. He needs to take Black Hand down, and fast, before he kills any more people.

"Hey, Hand?" Henry snarls. Ava's been keeping him on the ropes for a bit while Henry catches his breath. Black Hand looks up at the Green Lantern. Henry's mind races to think up a pithy line he can deliver.

"Fuck off."

Oh, well. He'll be more pithy next time. He unleashes the full power of his green ring at Black Hand, knocking the zombie flat on his back. "Wrap him up, Ava," he tells his partner. "We need to get him to the Sciencells."

Henry wavers a moment... then collapses, the ring fighting to keep the infection from spreading up his arm. But something must be done, and quickly...

Josh smiles. "No need to be embarrassed. I have no where else to go either," he says. "Henry's an awesome dude, isn't he? Just letting people come stay at his place," he chuckles. The healer takes a breath and finishes his slice of pizza while watching Avalon's wings. "Can your ring help you? Like project some kind of illusion?" he asks, unsure of how the rings work.

"Well...no I don't have any vows and I'm not a religious guy," he shrugs. "The only thing that keeps me on the straight and narrow is me. I heal those that need it and when I have to, I kick some bad guy butt," he chuckles. "So you got blue and green. Expecting any more brightly colored guys to come join ya?"

Laughing some, Avalon shakes his head to Josh's questions, his expression bright. "Well, my ring can't do that - illusions - but there's gotta be some way. Then again everyone on my father's planet is winged, so it wasn't such a big deal till I was assigned to Earth to help Henry."

He takes another bite, nodding his head. He then says "Well, I don't expect any more Lanterns, if that's what you mean. Another Blue may come, but that is because blues and greens work hand in hand. Sometimes they're specifically assigned to work together - like Henry and I."

"But seriously? don't loose Hope, okay? Always remember that I believe in you, and I'm also willing to bet that Henry does. You may have some tough times ahead."

"Huh. Woulda figured those fancy space rings could do something useful like that," Josh chuckles. "Oh well. Hmm. What about like...strapping your wings to your back? It'd be uncomfortable but you'd be able to cover 'em with coats and stuff," he suggested.

He nods as he listens to the explanation and lets out a thoughtful noise. "So no more? Hm. Wouldn't a complete set be more effective than just two colors though?" he asks.

The young man then blushes again. "Thanks, Avalon," he says. "I'm used to tough times. My life has been tough since the beginning."

"Maybe folding them, but it's really uncomfortable.. and right now I'd rather hang out here than do that to myself." confesses Avalon.

"Well, not all colors are.. nice. And some colors only have a very few members." he explains. "Honestly, unless we got a Violet Lantern, we have all that we need."

He grins a bit to Josh's flush, and says "Oh, it's gonna get harder before it gets better. But you are strong. Hope will show the way."

Josh smiles a bit wider. "Hanging out here does seem like a lot more fun," he agrees. "So you and Henry are partners? Are you umm," he pauses and blushes again. "just partners or...uh...together?" he asks, embarrassed.

"They're not? I remember reading about an evil yellow guy once but what about the others?" he asks, taking a sip of his drink. He then nods. "What about uh...Indigo? Any lanterns of that color?" he wonders, thinking leaving the step between blue and violet out would be bad.

The healer frowns a moment and glances in the direction Henry went. After a moment he shrugs and turns back to Avalon. "Story of my life, dude...story of my life. Bad to worse..."

"Together?" asks Avalon, confused by the terminology. It takes him a second, and then he flushes dark red and shakes his head a bit, his voice low as he says "I find Henry attractive but no, we are not.. together. We are assigned to be partners by those that lead the Lanterns. We work together.."

"Indigo is compassion. They are an odd tribe, and tend to be secretive." replies Avalon then, happy to have something else to speak of, other than his (lack of a) sex life. He would never dream of acting on anything he felt towards Henry - they were partners!

Josh takes a breath, conflicted about the answer. On the one hand it means he can flirt with Henry now. But on the other hand, he doesn't want to upset Avalon. With a small sigh and a nod, he decides to worry about it later.

The healer nods slowly, learning more about other supers today than he ever has before. "So what about going in the other direction on the spectrum? Yellow, Orange, and Red?"

"Yellow is fear, Orange avarice, and Red is rage." replies Avalon, his smile returning.

Oh, if Josh only knew - Avalon wouldn't become upset if there was any future flirting. Even though Josh was very much acting in a respectful way towards Avalon, Avalon doesn't operate on the same set of morals that a human might.

"THe yellow lanterns can be a mess to sort out, but there is only one Orange lantern - he's too selfish to share." says Avalon as he goes on chatting and eating. "The Reds you have to watch out for, they can infect you with their rage and make you much like them. They're dreadful things; spitting blood and barely able to even think.. They're more like rabid dogs than what you would consider a Lantern."

Josh nods and lets out a thoughtful noise. "This is pretty strange," he replies honestly. "But really interesting too," he adds. "Are there any of those bad Lanterns hanging around here on Earth?" he asks, wondering if he'll need to fight any of them.

The news of a Lantern with infection abilities brings a laugh out of Josh. "No need to worry about those Red ones with me around," he says. "I can heal away infections and injuries of any kind," he says, holding up a hand and letting it glow white a moment.

Smiling a bit to Josh, Avalon just shakes his head a bit as he murmurs "You can not heal rage with white light.. only blue."

He shifts a bit, drawing his feathers around himself as he tries to explain, "I mean, that's not to say that it wouldn't work, but when someone has been infected with rage, the only thing that will fix it that we know of, is the light from a blue ring. You very well may be able to cure it, but it's not a physical problem, if you get what I mean."

"But there aren't any of the bad lanterns on Earth, far as I know. Henry and I keep things under wraps here.. Henry's dad is really nice too." Avalon says, "He's got some great stories."

Josh tilts his head to the side. "I'm not sure my powers are light based. The just sorta make this glow," he says, letting it fade. "Isn't white light made up of the seven other colors of the spectrum though?" he asks, trying to remember science class.

"So it's some kinda mental problem? Hmm. Those are tricky. I mean I can help heal mental problems but it's really a pain...especially if I don't know what the problem is," he says, looking down at his hands.

He blinks a few times and suddenly looks a little worried. "Umm. Henry's parents aren't gonna be all mad that he's got me over, will they? I mean...most parents, especially superhero ones, would be mad if their kid said they were letting some super villain's kid hang around..." he trails off nervously.

Reaching out, Avalon whaps Josh with a wing, and then huffs at the boy a bit as feathers fluff. "Stop it!" he then commands, looking more silly than actually threatening, though once he reached adulthood the display probably would be much more effective. Right now he's just too skinny and it doesn't come off right.

"I don't care if your father was the Space Pope!" he then says, "Seriously, stop worrying about that. No one knows he's your dad till you tell them. So stop worrying; it's not like we all grew up with your face plastered next to his - heck - I didn't even know of him till I met you. But I don't really count as much because I'm not from here."

Avalon grins then, and pokes at Josh a bit now with a flight feather, his expression turning playful as he says, "Why not let us decide if we like you for who you are on our own, and stop bringing dad into it. Mr Jordan raised Henry as a single dad - if Henry is going to accept you readily then I'm sure Mr. Jordan will too."

Josh lets out a little 'eep' when whapped. The healer just ends up staring at Avalon. He resists the urge to smile at the winged hero's expression and blinks. "There's a space pope?" he asks.

He takes a deep breath and shrugs. "I just don't want you and Henry to get into any trouble because of me. I want to help people, not get them upset."

Laughing softly, Avalon takes a last bite of pizza and chews it before he swallows and says, "Well, too late for that; if it's going to happen, it already has."

He then shrugs some, his expression happy and content as he flops back, sprawling on the couch. "You worry too much. All Will Be Well." he then says, with what seems to be quite some authority.

"Josh, I was born into slavery. My parents knew that if they returned to Nalor, that they and I would all be bound into servitude, but they did because if they did not, my mother and I both would have died. I was born into a hard life, just as hard, if not more so than your own. being homeless and being a slave.. there's not a lot different. Your master is a different force, but you still struggle, you still spend the night on cold floors with a belly that is so hungry that it wakes you up."

Josh leans back as well. He can't help but smile as he observes Avalon all sprawled out. The guy's just too cute not to smile at him. "I worry too much?"

His expression sinks quickly as Avalon tells his story. "Oh man..." he trails off. "You had a harder time, dude. Man, I'm so glad you're not struggling with that anymore. No one should have to go through that..."

Shrugging his shoulders, Avalon just says softly "I'm just trying to make a point, Josh. All things happen for a reason, and all paths cross because it was ordained. Do you think that it was just chance that made us run into you this afternoon?"

The Naloria grins then some as he sits forward, his expression brightening as he says "But you worry too much. Hold onto hope - hope will bring about a brighter future. Always turn your face into hope's rays, and you will find yourself where you want to be."

"Incidentally, Nalor is no longer like that - the cast slavery has been abolished, and all live in equality now. My hand in all of that is how I earned my Ring. I brought hope back to a people who had long ago lost it. You are a ray of your own hope, Josh. You should revel in it a little. Do not let it go to your head, but have more faith in yourself and your abilities."

"Well," Josh shrugs. "I just sensed whatever Black Hand is and all the fading life around him and ran towards it," he says. "Not sure about any reasons for it."

"What if I dunno where I want to be?" he asks curiously. His eyes go wide. "It's not? Wow...you're a pretty awesome dude, Avalon! Helping to change a whole planet like that. Really, really impressive!" he says with a bright smile.

"Oh, I don't doubt my powers," he says, considering the ideal of some reveling. "They're a bit weird but they do what I need them to."

Avalon flops back onto the couch with a laugh, and goes about getting himself comfrotable. he pushes his shoulders and spine and wings back into the couch, then pulls his feathers around himself to make a nest of sorts. Whatever you might want to call it, it looks comfy. He then looks to Josh and flashes a big, wide smile.

"You do not have to know where you want to be, or where you are going." he then says, "Simply Hope for a better future, for a brighter tomorrow.. see that eventuality in your day to day actions and it will become truth." he pauses, then says "I trust that the universe brought us together. Do you realize that we are in Sector 2814.. and I am from Sector 5? I had to travel that many sectors to get here, to even be here today for us to speak. There is more than simple fate working; it is the destiny laid out for us all by the universe, and we must trust that destiny and it's will. Do not fight it, for when you do, that is how you bring hardship into your life."

Josh peers curiously at Avalon's little feather nest. He lets out a thoughtful little noise and eventually blushed faintly. "Okay, I am really sorry to ask this but it's been bugging me since I cooled down from the 'oh man gotta save the cool lantern' high...could I umm. Could I feel your wings?" he asks sheepishly.

"2814? What happened to the guy that's supposed to be here? Did he go back to 5 for you?" he asks, unsure. "I'm pretty sure hardships pop up no matter what I do though," he says with a nervous little laugh.

The question of wanting to touch his feathers actually makes Avalon flush right along with Josh. He shifts a bit, making room for the other boy on the couch and then says shyly "Uhm.. yea you can, I suppose."

He tries to distract himself a bit, focusing on Josh's questions about this sector's Blue Lantern. "Well, the way that Blue Lanterns are picked.. we've just not gotten to Sector 2814. That would mean that someone from Sector 2813 picked someone to induct and.. we just don't have that many Blue Lanterns." replies Avalon softly.

Okay, so, there was no real reason to be getting so anxious, but Avalon was. ANd it wasn't because he didn't want Josh to touch him.. it just was.. well.. that stroking another person's wings was considered the beginning of a sexual act. usually only family members, or one's mate, were the only ones to even come close to touching your wings, and Josh was none of these things. Avalon's biology responded in kind to it, his body starting to hum a bit as he drew in a long, deep breath. Well. It was to him the equivalent of making out with someone, but he certainly didn't want to tell Josh that.

Josh smiles and murmurs a thanks. He's been wondering what those feathers would feel like the whole time and finally gave into the question. He hesitates before gently running his hand over Avalon's wing. "Oh wow..." he trails off, amazed at the feeling. It's not what he was expecting.

"So there's only like...five of you guys?" he asks. "Man. How many sectors are there?" he asks, a little concerned. "I'm probably not Lantern material but if you guys need any help..." he offers.

The healer starts to say something else but stops suddenly. Paying attention to his extra sense, he looks Avalon over a few times and then blushes even deeper. His hand is pulled back quickly and Josh tried not to meet Avalon's eyes. "I umm...thanks..." he trails off. He really needs to learn more about alien biology and such before he does stuff like that.

Henry steps back into the room, frustrated with Jai, glad that Jon's at least on his side... and he sees Josh taking his hand off Avalon's wings quickly.

Normally, he'd make a joking, flirting comment... something like, I'm not interrupting anything, am I?, but he doesn't want Josh to be uncomfortable with a guy flirting with him. Not when he's trying to take care of him.

"Well, I've made a couple calls, Josh. I'm not sure what's going to happen next, but plans are forming." He rubs the back of his neck. "Do you have, like, bags or anything we need to retrieve from somewhere?"

Oh crap! Henry's arrival is the last thing that Avalon wants. Sitting up suddenly, the alien fluffs his feathers around himself and tries to not look wholly guilty. How the tables had turned; last time they were in this situation, it was Henry who was.. naughty.

Oh god. Ohgodohgodohgod. Avalon thinks as he progressively turns brighter red. Now if Josh didn't know what was going on, Henry probably did. Avalon wasn't sure about how much Josh could sense, but he knew his partner. And Henry had an eye for that sort of thing.

Josh sits up quickly as well, all red. He can sense the reactions that his hand on the wing brought out of Avalon unintentionally but he really isn't sure he wants to reveal that.

"Calls?" Josh asks, wondering who it was the Green Lantern called. "Err...no..." he shrugs. "No bags. Once I used up the last of the supplies I had, I sold my backpack to afford some food. Down to my last buck fifty now actually. All I've got left is this stuff," he admits, gesturing at himself.

Henry frowns. He knows teen runaways have it hard. He's met a couple who had to turn to prostitution to stay alive, before he could get them help from a shelter, and it looks like he caught Josh before that happened.

He storms back to his father's room. There's a credit card that's been left there in case his father's kept away for up to a month, and emergencies arise. (Longer than a month, and he's supposed to make arrangements with Carol, the Dibnys, or one of the other parental-sets.)

He comes back out, holding the card. This isn't exactly what Dad had in mind, but it's close enough.

"You done eating, man? You need some clothes and basic necessities."
