Quite the turn of events he was mixed up in, Vertigo reflected. Bad company, to be certain, though the money was well worth a little tarnish. Vertigo knew that he himself was a killer, and that he had done innumerable things that outsiders (and Americans in particular) might well call "bad." But he was not without his own sense of right and wrong either.
And here, at least, they were on the side of, at least, less wrong.
