Into Each Life A Little Chaos Must Fall
All in all, Alina is pretty fond of the desert. It’s local, beautiful, and full of large empty spaces where she can sling her spells about without worrying that something terrible is going to happen. She favors a particular bluff that’s hard to get to if you can’t fly and gives her a good view of the surrounding area – the last thing she wants is to accidentally turn a wandering idiot into some kind of crazy monster. Today though, she’s not out here to practice. She’s out here to try an experiment.

After the whole “Blackest Night: Redux” thing, Jaime Reyes had settled himself back into his life, albeit without the scarab and the super-powers. He hadn’t given up the good fight or anything, he’d made sure she knew that, but he wasn’t going to try and pull Khaji Da off of Dinah either. And really, Alina’s just glad that he’s not dead and putting his life back together. That’s not what she’s doing out here. What she’s doing is trying to find Black Beetle. Just because Jaime’s not dead anymore doesn’t mean that Alina’s going to let Black Beetle get away with murder.

Today, she’s just looking to find him, find some way to trace him back to his lair. It’s hard, because time-traveling enemies suck goats that way; but Alina has determination on her side, and power to burn. She’s also got food, water, shelter, and both a fully-charged cell phone and a YJLA communicator in case she burns a little too much.

(Of course, if she were being properly responsible she’d have someone with her to make sure she didn’t burn out, but if she were being properly responsible she wouldn’t be doing this in the first place.)

Settling herself into a comfortable cross-legged position, Alina begins to meditate. Her magic, never far out of reach, wells up inside her and swirls around her like thin water or a thick wind. It tugs at her hair, her clothes, her butterfly mask, but it also seems to sense that she’s serious today. It’s almost inquisitive in texture, though not in the polite way; more like the way a dare-devil wants to know if a friend needs someone to hold their hand while they jump off the roof and into the pool. She visualizes an empty sphere between her palms and pours her magic into it.

I want Black Beetle. Alina focuses on her memories of him, the details of his armor, the hatred in his voice when he said Jaime’s name, the way he’d taunted her the few times they’d fought. I want to know where he is. I want to know what he’s doing. I want Black Beetle. Find him for me, lay all his secrets bare. Find me his weaknesses, show them to me. His scraps, his fragments, his trail and his lair. Find them. Bring them to me.

Her magic doesn’t much like being focused like this. It fights her, but she’s used to that, and feeds more of it into the imaginary sphere. She can do this. Her palms begin to tingle like she’s holding a ball of millions of tiny pins, but she breathes deeply and feeds it more magic.

Then she hiccups, and vanishes with a crack like somebody hitting a home-run.

"Flash, I suppose. I'm not exactly from around here, and the Flash family isn't that possessive about the name. Really, Steven is fine." he replies, continuing to show no signs of grabbing her butt. (really, that would be more like this girlfriend to do than him.)
"You sure you're ok?"

"Not complaining, just surprised," Alina says. "You're pretty trusting, aren't you? And yeah, I'm fine. One of my 'top ten freaky teleports', sure, but definitely could have been worse."

"No real reason not to be. I'm pretty open with the whole heroing thing. Don't have a whole lot of life outside the JSA."

"Huh." Well, there's really not much she can say to that. "I hope you don't mind if I stick with 'Kaotik' for now, since I went to all that trouble working out a theme and all."

She glances around, then turns a grin on Steven. "So, are we going somewhere or are you just working on your upper-body strength?"

"Feel free, its a good name. As for the going somewhere bit, where would you like to go? I've been practicing the whole rescuing falling maidens thing, but hadn't quite worked out what to do with them post-rescue yet."

"I doubt that I'm going to get anywhere I want to go for awhile yet," Alina says, weighing the pros and cons about making a comment about his use of "maiden" before deciding to let it slide. "Usually when I end up somewhere unexpected, there's some kind of trouble going down in the immediate vicinity. That doesn't seem to be happening here, so I guess I'm at a loss for ideas."

"How about lunch, then? We can talk shop, or whatever."

"I'm not hungry at the moment, but I could go for a smoothie or something like that," Alina says. "Know any good places that cover both of those?"

Shop-talk is always fun. Especially if she's going to be calling on this guy for chasing down the Black Beetle, it'd be nice to know where he draws his lines.

"Haven't tried one of those... sounds interesting. So... don't know, but the whole world is available if you have a favorite spot?"

"...The whole world? Really?"

If he's just saying 'anywhere' to be nice, it'd be really rude of her to take advantage. But if he's being serious, she's so hitting somewhere she's never been before. Opportunities like this don't drop into a girl's lap every day!

Or vice versa, as the case may be.

"Well, unless you're paying, got to keep it reasonable. We're still working out the JSA stipend thing - but otherwise, sure. Pretty much anywhere is a ten second jog if you don't mind being carried."

"I was thinking more along the lines of street vendors or take-out," Alina says. "Sitting in a restaurant in my costume would be weird."

She drums her fingers against her hip in thought, then sighs. "It seems like kind of a waste when 'everywhere' is on the menu, but I've got an uncle who's addicted to the food channels and boy do they ever love NYC. I'll be better prepared next time I bounce into town unexpectedly."

"Bah, I'll give you my number. You're in the business, and they keep telling me I need to meet people outside the JSA... as for costumes, JSA'ers have some cred most places, we could work it... but sure, NYC, and next time, give me a call, I'll meet you wherever, if you can give me directions."

Alina can't help but laugh. "If you're trying to meet other people in the biz, we should totally get our teams together. Have a picnic or something, do sack races for charity. It'll be great."

She shakes her head. "It's not that I think the people in the restaurant would be weirded out by me," she explains. "I just think it would be weird to do the sit-down restaurant thing in my costume. Plus, I would totally spill something all over myself in public and my family would tease me about it forever."
