Its not the qualifications. He's well ahead of the science curve. Its verifying he can handle the pressure and workload - and this is the first test of that.
He wishes he could make it easier on Cait, he really does... and that only adds to the pressure. Still, so far, so good, mostly. He's handled the preliminaries - now just the actual central interview.
