Ah to be young
He was the eldest current member of the JSA. Next came the lovely Cat. Now it wasn't often Mark was reminded that he was a little older. Mostly because when he ad started preparing for the Fourteenth he was constantly reminded that Cat was a fantastic woman.

Of course because Cat is a fantastic woman he decides he has to meet her parents. Why is he doing this alone? Is he seriously drunk?

Nope. He wants to explain his intentions for their daughter. Because he knows Cat is perfect. She might kick his ass for going alone if her parents tell her but in some ways Mark is just a bit old fashioned. And so he feels like he has to ask their permission first.

This is going to go just fine. He has no reason to be nervous at all.

There was a moment where Mark was in grave danger of being hit again. But it passed. Ted semi-reluctantly helped Mark back up.

"Say this for ya, kid, ya can take a punch."

He cracked his knuckles. "Now, you was sayin' somethin' about marryin' our little girl...?"

Zinda sat back down, content for the moment that there would be no bloodshed in her living room, or that she'd be left out of it. "Does Cat know that's why you're here?"

"She might have an idea since I told her I wanted to introduce her to the only person I've ever thought of as family. Brother Darius. We were in the same home for a while as kids and he was older. He's like my brother, really." Mark actually turns a little red with embaressment.

"And I do love her, I also know I'm not perfect. But I can try a little harder, at least."

Reluctantly, Ted sat himself back down. He was watching Mark, listening to his words, but more importantly, he was watching the man himself. He may have had bad luck with the dames sometimes, but when it came to guys, Ted was an excellent judge of character.

"I ain't exactly a saint, neither, kid," he said. "But Cat and her brother, Tommy, well, they're the best things I've done with me life."

And his long dead son Jake. God. Thought he was going to get through the day without thinking about him.

"So ya listen ta me and ya listen close. Ya do anything, and I mean anything to hurt my baby girl, and there won't be anybody who'll be able to stop me from knockin' yer head off yer shoulders."

It was a good speech. It said everything Zinda wanted to say about her baby, and if Mark was smart he'd realize it went for both of them.

She put a hand on Ted's for support and squeezed. "She's gonna kick your butt for doing this, Mark. Cat's her own woman."

"I think she'd kill me first, sir. But I understand," Mark offers with a nod. What Zinda says has him actually grin looking years younger than he is.

"I know. I fully expect her to be mad when she figures it out. The key is explaining to her why I did it and letting her be as mad as she wants to. I can wait until she's no longer mad. Then grovel. Lots of groveling."

Ted actually laughed at that. "You're a brave man, Mark," he said. "But I think Cat's lucky to have you."

"We'll see if he survives," Zinda said, taking a more pragmatic view. "When's this supposed t' happen?"

"In two weeks. I don't have a solid plan for how just the date," he admits with a sheepish look crossing his face.

Ted's look was a little sheepish on its own. "'fraid I can't help ya with that one, Mark. Never actually did propose to anybody...."
